Advice for Environmental Science amongst selective schools

Colby, Pitzer.

Wait, what? Maybe these are twin daughters?

Just a younger sister who gets dibs on applying to Harvard per the OP on the long thread.

A wide range of LACs (even ones that don’t make any particular lists as the ā€œbestā€ for that field of study) provide excellent environmental science education with better likelihood of research opportunities with more responsibility compared to universities where undergrads take a backseat to grad students. On the flip side, universities will offer a wider variety of classes.

For this field, I’d recommend the former for better job prospects after graduation based on those research opportunities. ā€œPrestigeā€ and selectivity of the school isn’t going to be nearly as much of a factor.

D24 college list is final and can’t be modified to include Harvard, Colby, or Pritzer. She’s secured admission to UVA, and after carefully considering the breadth of courses in Environmental Science, and the strength of the club swimming program, opted to pursue this option and await results from the RD round.

She’s researched the environmental science programs in selecting her list, and believes they are all very strong, and is seeking any further insight into those specific programs.

How did things work out for your ā€œfriendā€?

I’m sure the Coach and AD at the school that supported your admission and gave your D24 a slot (when you desperately wanted it) are thrilled with you for reneging and pulling your application within a week of the ED2 release date.

Not sure if you are solely managing the application process, or if your D24 is involved, but you have taught her a very poor life lesson about not honoring one’s commitments to individuals who supported you when you needed it the most.

This thread is seriously pointless.

Aside from there already being a 2400 post thread on her journey and aside for asking for suggestions on colleges with environmental science a year ago, her applications are in. I see no purpose in further researching schools until decisions are released; there’s little value discussing the merits of Stanford if she ends up being rejected.

Combined with the fact that the OP rarely answers questions posed, changes the story constantly, and has shown blatant disregard for the recruiting process by jerking multiple coaches around, I’m shocked that any users are still responding.

Pardon me, but you don’t have a list. You have one college acceptance. Come back when you have a list.

I agree. Kids switch commitments, but walking this late in the game is really poor form. The coach can’t even over the spot to another athlete. I’m sue OP would be thrilled if it had been his daughter who missed out because someone led the coach on.

UVA seems to have a pretty extensive list of Environmental Science courses. What doesn’t she like about it?

@MMRose fully agree UVA has a great environmental science program, with a strong tradition in both depth and breadth. After thinking thoroughly for days, she opted for that option over pursuing ED2 recruit, because she prioritized academics in her final assessment. She’s just seeking to better understand all the great programs she’s applied to.

This mimics a friend who bypassed an athletic recruit spot to apply REA to his first choice school because of a better fit.

Not sure why you are ā€œseeking further insightā€ on anything from this community . You have almost 3000 posts on securing an athletic commitment, which you have somehow managed but then turned your back on at the last minute. You obviously don’t value the advice given here.

Didn’t she get accepted ED2? (as your other threads suggest).

She’s admitted to UVA, which doesn’t have ED2, and withdrew her ED2 app.

Her choice was to opt for the best academic path between two great schools, one of which included an athletic recruit track. It doesn’t mean she doesn’t value the information, support, and advice she received on pursuing a recruit track. Another applicant could well have opted with the recruit track. She diligently weighed the pros and cons of each option, and ultimately made her own mind.

Yes, I’m very much aware UVA does not offer ED2. What I’m asking (and I believe others would like to know as well), is what happened with the ED2 school where your daughter had coach’s and admissions support? Did she withdraw before decisions were out? Was she not accepted? Or was she accepted but you/she don’t think it’s a good fit?

Can you please clarify the ED2 situation? It’s hard for people to advise you on RD if you don’t provide clarity.

(ETA - adding context: Nivo updated his post after I posted this message. His original post only said that UVA did not have ED2)

I’d say that intent is relevant as well. Changing one’s mind based on a developing understanding of one’s preferences may be legitimate. However, holding an ED relationship with a coach and school as a strategy — that is, to see if an alternative comes in from the side at the last moment — would seem to represent really poor form indeed.

The silence speaks volumes.

I am sorry, but I have to disagree. Pulling an ED2 commitment after app deadlines in no way mimics forgoing a commitment to apply REA at a preferred school.
