I looked forward to seeing Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close until I read the book. After reading it, I’m less sure I’ll go to the movie. I’m waiting to see the reviews - I think.

I mentioned that we went to see The Adventures of Tintin yesterday. (Fun movie!) I meant to throw out a bit of movie trivia. Daniel Craig “stars” in both The Adventures of Tintin and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and both movies opened Dec. 21.

Can you figure out who Daniel Craig plays by watching the trailer?

Ignatius, I read the book several weeks ago along with my daughter and son. I didn’t know it was being made into a movie then. We all wondered how that book could translate into a movie. We went to see the movie last night and we thought they did a very good job. The boy who plays Oscar is phenomenal and should be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actor category. Not everything from the book makes it into the movie but the choices of what to change or edit are well-made. One major shift is made that we actually liked better than the way it happened in the book. Max von Sydow is outstanding as the grandfather who doesn’t speak. I couldn’t take my eyes off of his face. Overall, we felt the movie was true to the book while making good choices about what to delete. The only thing we thought was that maybe it was a little too true in the sense that some things we knew the meaning of from the book but might have been too subtle for a movie viewer to get without having read the book. The story is tied up a little too neatly with some additions that don’t happen in the book. It ends in a more upbeat and hopeful way than the book does. But I’m glad I saw it. Bring Kleenex.

I grew up on Tintin, and was prepared to be disappointed, it was silly, but a lot of fun. I’d forgotten who was in it, but certainly didn’t recognize anyone. Gollum? Sean of the Dead? James Bond? Nope to all of them!

I hate Tom Cruise so have no real urge to see Mission Impossible. I thought Sherlock Holmes was just okay. It had a bit more plot than the last one, but more stupid stuff. Like the slow motion action for no reason at all.
