Anyone watch Parenthood, the tv show?

I appreciated the support the show was lending to tense teens everywhere, and its avoidance of the easy path of having Amber get into Berkeley. But applying to just two colleges? That wasn’t in character for Amber, who is a worrier and a planner. It WAS in character for Sarah, which is why it wasn’t for her daughter. (Sarah, who was 2-for-2 last night: “You’ll get into Berkeley.” “I’m sure it will work.”)

On the other hand, speaking of easy paths . . . Max is brilliant and is ready to be mainstreamed? Really? Richard Dreyfus is going to produce Sarah’s play? Really? Really?

I think I disagree about Amber. Haddie would never let this happen to her, but Amber I can believe.

I wish I could come up with the right adjective to convey what I mean. Amber is sometimes strong, but, to me, it’s more of a shield because she doesn’t feel confident. She was “abandoned” by her dad. She doesn’t trust her own good sense, and her good sense would have told her to apply to more than two schools. She kept telling her mom that Berkeley wasn’t a lock, but Sarah would have none of it, and Amber wasn’t strong enough to do what she knew needed to be done, that being applying to more schools.

Amber only turned her grades around in the last year, so of course she didn’t get into Berkeley. Funny how they said “they are sending the letters out” when Berkeley puts the decisions up on the website way before you get a letter. I would have thought someone at school might have helped Amber out more.

that’s where they got it wrong … a kid can’t apply to college on their own. They need the high school to help - to send out transcripts and to get teacher recommendations together and out … it’s shocking that no one would suggest other schools … obviously it couldn’t have been too much of a “safety” if they didn’t let her in.

I agree with your comments, JHS, and your skepticism about the ‘easy paths’. I love this show but I think that this episode was a weak one, for many reasons.

I wish writers knew more about the college application process, especially the colleges that they include in their scripts. Berkeley doesn’t have an interview process. Legacies don’t count in the University of California admissions. The admissions director at Berkeley would never tell anyone (especially an interviewer) whether or not someone go int ahead of decision announcements. Writers, do your homework!

I felt sorry for Amber. She’s got a Mom whose head is in the clouds and is too busy reinventing herself to be there for Amber in the right ways. Sara saying “You’ll get it.It’ll work out” is just wishful thinking. Sometimes Amber is more adult than Sara.

Actually, with the UCs, students can apply on their own. They don’t send transcripts until the summer after they get in. There are no recommendations. You just fill in the online application. And the thing is, if she applied to one or two UCs, she could have applied to more, because all you have to do is check an additional box and pay one more application fee.

The CC reaction is cracking me up, with the insider knowledge on the admissions and application process.
Anyone remember Lauren Graham’s daughter Rory on Gilmore Girls applying only to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton and getting into all three?

No wonder she thought her daughter was a lock! And yes, I do remember Rory’s amazing results.

Help! Someone told me all about this show and suggested I watch it. But since I don’t watch much tv, I’m out of my element here. I couldn’t find it. I thought she said it was on Wednesday nights, but couldn’t find it. Can someone please let me know the day, time, and channel so I don’t continue to miss it? Thanks!!!

Tuesday night. 10 pm Eastern time. I think it’s NBC.

You can catch up with the rest of us at wwwDOTnbcDOTcom

Have you ever seen a lamer prom? There were 6 people on the dance floor! My Bat Mitzvah saw more action.

I can’t wait until next week. WTH is going to happen to Amber? Will Haddie 'fess up?

Crosby is still an idiot.

Crosby…it’s the canines that distract me.

I can’t believe no one is wanting to dish about the Haddie-Alex sex thing.

I thought Julia, well, the actress, was so good this week.

Have to say I loved Haddie’s sly smile at the end and got a kick out of her Dad’s freaking out because he remembers what he was doing at that age. How quickly the wheels turn.

I know. I loved/hated that she seemed so, well, satisfied as I was watching with my 16yo.

YDS: I agree WTH is going to happen to Amber next week??? I think that Haddie will tell Christina but I’m thinking that maybe they will decide to keep it to themselves and not tell Adam. And then she will get the birth control talk. Of course, Christina will probably spill the beans to Adam anyway! Julia was great, sometimes I don’t think that they use her enough. But I guess with the huge cast, it’s pretty hard.

So glad to find others vested in this show. Why is Crosby such an idiot? I did appreciate that he had siblings willing to articulate his poor judgment BEFORE he purchased the house; of course, to no avail. Haddie’s in a tough position b/c, if she admits she had sex with Alex, no matter how many times she will say he didn’t pressure her, etc., her parents will flip out and probably try to forbid the romance again. Watching the previews, I’m not looking forward to Amber’s next steps…
