Really enjoyed tonight’s episode. I think they are allowing everyone to age in a good way.
Joel is going to make problems. And I thought he was off the show all together…

I didn’t make it until 10pm last night so I watched today. I really enjoyed it too. Glad Haddie is back. They kept saying how great Joel looked, and he really did look good. My dad has left a hospital or two AMA so I really identified with that. Definitely looks like it will be a good season.

My guess is that they’re setting up Zeke’s death and the birth of Amber’s baby to happen to end the season. I would have preferred to have Zeke exit in the first episode as he’s my least favorite character on the show. I’m hoping for lots of Hank and lots of Amber this season.

I had a lot of questions after last night’s episode. How did Julia get a job? Didn’t she have a problem last season with her last boss making it difficult for her? Amber is still in her first trimester so how much time possibly could have passed for her to get a job and a boyfriend? Why is Haddie around? Doesn’t she have school or some kind of study abroad program she alluded to? And perhaps my biggest question is why did Zeke and Camille sell their house and “downsize” to an enormous (and obviously very expensive) house in San Francisco? What happened to the condo they were talking about? That whole storyline is ridiculous. If Camille wanted to see a play she could drive into the city or take the BART like tons of people do that every single day to get to their jobs.

I also did not understand Julia’s job. Isn’t Amber’s baby fro mthe guy who died? Glad to see Haddie–no idea what she is doing. I think it is a 5-6 hour drive from LA to LAS ( I have sibs in both places who drive to see each other).
Guessing Zeke is getting ready to be sick and they will be happy to be closer to medical facilities. Also, while the house is silly big they still do not have the acerage and out building to take car eo f

Amber is pregnant after her hospital assignation with Ryan who is not dead but injured and returned to wherever he was from to live with his mom. Yes, and almost as ridiculous as selling in Berkeley and buying that multimillion dollar home in SF is that it apparently takes everyone no time at all to get from the Bay Area to LV. I guess we are just supposed to assume somehow Julia overcame all the problems that were keeping her from a job before and just happened to land an amazing job with her own office and a hunky former law school boyfriend, a la The Good Wife.

The general way that people get from SFO or OAK to LAS is via air. It is a short, cheap flight and there are many, many flights, particularly because it is a major connection hub point for Southwest Airlines. If there was any implication that anyone drove to Vegas in last night’s show, I missed it. There are 12 flights a day from Oakland & another 11 flights from SF – and that’s just the one airline.

At some point, I think Sarah referred to flying to Vegas. I am assuming the story was set in August at the beginning of the school year and that Haddie just hasn’t gone back to Cornell or to her study abroad program and will be departing shortly. I was glad to see Amber confiding in Haddie. I don’t think Ryan died, but he just didn’t appear in this episode.

I thought it was nice that they had everybody in the family but Adam & Kristina’s little girl in the opening episode (or did I miss her?), but I don’t expect to see them all again so often. Evidently one of the hang ups with getting this season renewed was budget, so we’ll be missing some faces in future episodes as they focus on fewer people to save money.

I thought it was all plausible. Last season ended at the end of the school year and now we’re in late August/early September with the new school year beginning. That’s plenty of time for Julia to have found a job (can’t we assume she was looking the whole time but that wasn’t the focus of a storyline?). I thought they flew to Vegas as well, which would be a quick trip. Haddie’s study abroad program hasn’t started yet.

Hank’s dd is a piece of work. What a brat. I don’t like his ex-wife either. Camille continues to be mostly unlikable. Want to see more of Drew and Natalie. And Joel. Mmmmmm. Love Joel.

Oh and Nora was there, looking at the window in one of the scenes of the new school.

Parenthood has always required leaps of logic in order to continue watching it and this show was no exception. The timing of flights to Vegas was one but the issues with the school were definitely another. I found this comment in a recap pretty funny.

Also, where was the headmaster? Did they just drop that storyline?

Agreeing with Youdon’tsay, but expanding on that comment - how is it that the school is in crisis over construction, but Adam goes on to work the day before opening and then goes to Vegas? Yet, all the women seem to be there and recruit Joel for assistance. Obviously, we aren’t supposed to be thinking that hard at that time of night!

As I watched the latest show I kept wondering something. Is a school obligated to provide a lunch for each child that meets his/her dietary restrictions? Couldn’t Kristina require them to bring their own lunch, especially if they cannot eat the lunch provided? I know it made for a story line, but what are the school’s obligations in real life?

I’m pretty sure that it is NOT required for the school to provide meals – moreover, I would expect that if the school DID provide meals, there would be heath inspection requirements for the kitchen and meal preparation areas that would have to be met-- and clearly having the meals prepared by a bunch of special-needs kids wouldn’t cut it.

It seems to me that the logical choice for providing meals for a special-needs charter would be to incorporate more common dietary restrictions – for example, the gluten/casein free regimen for ASD is fairly popular (probably more fad than science) – see <a href=“Gluten Free/Casein Free Diets for Autism”>Gluten Free/Casein Free Diets for Autism; – but it might have made sense in the first place to go with the flow and set up a menu based on that approach to start. And of course we have all heard of situations where an entire school goes peanut-free because of kid who has a severe peanut allergy.

But I would expect that these issues would have been thought through in advance and parents of children with special dietary needs beyond the norm would be asked to pack their own lunch. In any case I can’t imagine a professional school administrator responding to a parent call or email with a next-day change. I mean – that’s the sort of thing that takes planning and might be implemented several weeks after a request.

So no, none of us ordinary people can expect that we can call up the local middle school, announce that our kid has gone vegan, and expect a made-to-order meal the next day.
