Thanks, I saw that already. I communicated with University Scholarships and they said scores lower than 33 will be considered and awarded in Dec. and Feb.
DS24 received a VIT invite over the weekend. However, he does not seem the least bit interested in attending. We toured in the spring, but it was just a regular campus tour. We did not even see a dorm or talk to anyone from his intended major. He says Auburn is his first choice, so I am somewhat puzzled as to why he is not interested in going for a second visit especially since the VIT program provides a much more personalized experience. He received a similar invite from his second choice school and does not seem interested in attending that one either. Does this seem odd to anyone? I guess Iâm beginning to wonder if this is reflective of his actual interest in these schools or maybe heâs having second thoughts about going to school so far OOS. I am probably over analyzing here, but my husband and I are finding it hard to understand his seemingly general lack of interest in exploring and finding out more about a school where he may spend the next four years of his life! Has anyone else experienced something similar with their students?
My son is the same way. An overall lack of interest. I did get him to go with me to the VIT tour and it was awesome. One on One and we were driven around in a golf cart! A very cool experience. My son has only applied to 2 schools so far and has already got accepted to Auburn. I just donât understand his overall lack of interest in the whole process. I believe he is a little immature and the reality of leaving his comfort zone (high school) hasnât hit him yet. Similar thing happened with my daughter. After one semester in college she âwoke upâ and is now doing very well. I think some kids are in denial a little and are not mentally ready to accept the next stage in their life.
Wouldnât call it common but not uncommon either.
Itâs worth a conversation with them to understand whatâs going through his head.
It could be âIâve already made up my mind that I want to go to XYZ, not sure why weâre beating a dead horse.â Or it could be any of the reasons you suggest.
My kid too. Glad to see there are other similar kids. For some of us parents, we are so much more invested in the process than the kid who will be attending for 4 years. I think my son sees it as another to-do on his list. If the school meets some internal criteria (that he does not articulate clearly to me and I cannot quite grasp), heâs done thinking about it and doesnât understand why we keep going over the same decisions. He thinks all campuses look the same, and any differences we point out are meaningless to him. Itâs super frustrating, to the point my husband doesnât want to go on any more tours. He says we make this effort, sometimes booking a hotel, sometimes taking time off from work, just to get another, yeah itâs fine, it looks like every other campus. I did find some universities in big cities with a virtual tour that finally did not look like every other campus to him. Probably a pointless exercise, but I guess I fulfilled my own mission to figure out what he meant.
who knows, but putting myself in these kidsâ shoes, itâs possible that they are getting weary of the whole college conversation. Perhaps they want to enjoy their final year in HS and at home and just stop talking about college. The whole college app process is so much longer and so much more intense than it was when we were in high school.
Same - just the flyer. No welcome packet. Accepted on 11/16.
My kid is tired of what seems to him like game-playing by the schools. Announcements on random dates, having to set up email accounts to get information from some schools, others using portals, others sending it to private email, some schools doing 3 separate applications for admission, honors, and scholarships while others do it all at once with the same essays - it seems like most schools do one thing efficiently and then thereâs a bunch of âbusyworkâ for the rest, and my kid is tired of dealing with it. Also, my kid is very focused on work - when can you start getting hands-on practice? The tours at many schools focus on lifestyle and vibe and proximity to restaurants or a cityâŠand thatâs really important to some kids, but my kid only applied to schools that had acceptable environments, so doesnât want to get bogged down in specifics. I could imagine that a lot of kids are like that - different priorities, but the same âThe school checks the boxes that are important to meâŠI donât need to fret over the detailsâ. For some people itâs empowering to feel like they know exactly how things fit together, but others (usually correctly) assume that as long as things are reasonable theyâll be fine and would rather not invest to much mental energy in something that wonât actually be relevant for 9 more months.
We received the welcome packet over the weekend.
Youâre right, for a lot of kids, this good enough attitude is very practical and wise. Chasing a dream school has its own pitfalls.
Your kid is spot on about how exhausting it is that every school has a special set of rules and where to get updates. I asked about whether he set up an email for one of his schools, and we looked and looked and turns out this school doesnât make you do that. Also having to keep up with yet another application, essay, and deadline for every honors program, or making the right deposits that get you in line for housing. The email reminders keep coming in. It is so much noise. No wonder they start blocking it out.
I have seen an Admitted Student Day referenced within this thread but canât find any information on it. I mean something in the spring, not CWE. Has anyone seen or heard anything about an Admitted Students Day?
The VIT Event is over several days to choose âAccording to Admitted Majorâ. From the beginning of January to late March 2024.

Did the VIT invite come in mail, email or portal? TIA
Frustrating I know. As is the fact that we hear from some schools in August and others in March - the process is far too drawn out and stressful. I wish that there was a policy that if a school uses the common app then all the EA decisions for all the schools are released on the same day. You log in to the common app on day X and the results for all your EA schools are there. The same for RD etc. Just like the ivys release their decisions on the same day.
All the hoops you have to jump through (separate applications etc) are also a way for schools to weed out students who are not 100% interested in the school. This reduces the number of applications they have to review. Itâs another form of demonstrated interest.
yeah, my biggest gripe are the essays. I mean give me break with all these essays! By November, my kid was DONE. He nixed three schools off the list because they had MULTIPLE supplemental essays as well as simply stupid questions (âtell us what songs you would put on a mixed tapeâ), and he just couldnât do it anymore. As it is he wrote about 10 different essays for all the schools he did apply to, but he reached saturation point and wouldnât do any more. So several schools that he otherwise would have applied to, he jut didnât. They should all just take the common app essay and be done with it. These essays are not a very objective way of evaluating a student anyway, because who knows how much help kids are getting from others on their essays. Itâs ridiculous
Just got the VIT invite, arrived in the mail
As a mom of a current freshman, highly recommend attending anything your student is invited to, even if they are âsureâ. Auburn does an amazing job of courting high stats kids (and their parents) and convincing them that Auburn is the right place! Much smaller groups and a more personalized experience than the general tours.
Hi all do we know if we will hear anything on Friday for certain for the EA 3rd wave? Thanks
USPS Mail. But any admitted student can go. I posted the registration link.
My son just got the VIT invite. Has anyone done this yet? Is it worth it to tour again from OOS?
