Btw,Sucharita, whats wrong with making nukes? Why should India sign CTBT and NPT when its neighbours, namely Pakistan and China, havent ,and pose major security threats?
When the USA,the "champion " of disarmament hasent ratified it yet?

are you defending the bjp by saying the congress is no better

I am saying that the Congress, its supporters and all those who were so antagonised by the Gujarat riots should also cast their worthy opinions in other directions.

Akash I have little faith in the Congress precisely because of 1984. As for saying that the karsevaks deserved what they got- I’m sorry I never saw any such remarks probably because as you say most papers tooka strongly anti NDA stand at the time. I’m not contesting that.

The point in question however is not whether I condone Congress actions or not. The point is why I choose to castigate the BJP and I think I’ve made that abundantly clear. And when the PM makes sweeping statements like ‘Muslims do not want to live in peace’ well thats the time I lose what little respect I have for these people as human beings if nothing else.

“The point is why I choose to castigate the BJP and I think I’ve made that abundantly clear”

PLease then dont forget to castigate other ppl too.

“And when the PM makes sweeping statements like ‘Muslims do not want to live in peace’ well thats the time I lose what little respect I have for these people as human beings if nothing else.”

Did u see in what context he was making that speech? And ask yourself, isnt it a fact that since times immemorial, always it was the Muslims who started the riots?

When India realizes that its problem is rich and poor instead of hindus and muslims it will be a much better place.

That’s true BJP speak. I don’t need to say anything else.

couldn’t agree more merc
And If the Muslims have started riots I have to say the BJP has done an excellent job of continuing them…

god, why am i always gone when the action is on…

alright akash. i might agree with you tht bjp has more educated ppl than congress, but when these so called ‘educated’ ppl makes bad judgement calls (like gujarat) they dont deserve anything but be barred from any kind of public office forever.

i also agree with you that hindutva is a way of life that ppl in India follows. Try to explain this to your fellow BJPers, who believe that hindutva is oppressing minority and taunting them that ‘hey, we are more powerful’

again, for those who have not seen wht bjp did in gujarat with their own eyes, they have a reason to support their local representatives, irrespective of the party politics. But i will never understand how any sensible and a true hindu (following the hindu way of live of peaceful and secular coexistence) in gujarat can vote for the hindutva agenda tht the saffron brigadier is followin…

such - “burning of pregnant women”. let me tell u something chillin

Banoben had worked at our home in gujarat for over 8 years and was like a part of our family. Every diwali, she would partake in laxmi poojan and every Samvatsari (jain fest) she would abstain from all kinds of potatoes, onions, etc… Since, i was a little kid, i looked forward to Id for all the sweets tht she would bring for me.

On Feb 29 2002, Banoben, six (or seven) months pregnant, was dragged out of her house by a mob of rioting and proud Hindus. Before they killed her, they open her stomach and pulled out the baby in front of her eyes and burned it!!! I dont know if she died of trauma before she was burnt as well. But I will swear on my and my family’s life, that she did not have anything to do with Godhra killing. She was a better human being than I am and a probably followed more hindu principles than i do.

i cant comprehend, how killing banoben furthered, elevated or glorified hindu religion. my family have financially adopted banoben’s older son and sent him out of state - but imagine a seven year old kid who has seen his mom and his to-be-bron sibling die in front on his eyes…

oh i am so proud to be a hindu. bs

born to hindu-jain parents - i used to be proud of my religious identity. i used to be proud to be a gujju where in 92, not a single stone was thrown. i was damn proud of the secular and peaceful way of lives tht hinduism preached and how we did not have to rely on strength to spread the word…people just came to it by being attracted to it…

but when rss, vhp, shiv sena and bjp try to be my spokesperson and say that ‘all’ hindus supported the ‘retaliation’ to godhra. i think of two questions- a. Am I not a hindu? because i dont support this mindless retaliation or b. has bjp gone crazy and i need to fight against it to safeguard the true identity of my religion? Well, i chose the later… and people in guj knows tht i chose later and modi knows tht i chose the later

akash, dont take me wrong. i dont support when muslims burnt the train or whatever they did before. what i am angry about is misrepresentation of my religious identity by these political parties. The hinduism and hindutva that i know about and i love really dont have much commonalities with the hinduism tht rss is preaching and i need to protect my version

ideally, what is happenin is tht the hidutva agenda of bjp has alienated more hindus than muslims from bjp. election results were a small glimpse of tht. if we continue to go ahead on this internal fight - hinduism is headed toward pure destruction (maybe like islam is because of their fight between the moderate-fundamentalist)

about bjp vs. congress - my vote and $ will go to congress, not because i like them, but because i hate bjp so much. i could give a damn about congress ppl except tht its the only existing party tht will stop those murderers from getting elected. the positive thing is that both parties are pro-economic changes and India will progress, irrespective of the elected party…

yes adides mine too. I read Krishna’s report on the riots and have never been more horrified in my life.

I too have been a practising Hindu my whole life. Its a tragedy that Feb 2002 made me, my mother and grandparents feel ashamed of that identity

That said, people like your family reaffirm my faith in humanity

such - thx for ur kind words. u might want to visit

Straight from the press: (source: ft.com)

"In an interview on Friday with the Financial Times, Mr Wolfensohn said India’s new Congress-led government, which came to office unexpectedly last May, was pretty much everything for which the World Bank could hope.

Mr Wolfensohn, who on Friday met Manmohan Singh, India’s economist prime minister, said the government’s common minimum programme was precisely in tune with the World Bank’s objectives of overal economic development."

But then, the World Bank is not exactly India’s best friend ,is it?

Also, have they really started to implement the common minimum programme?I dont think so

“But then, the World Bank is not exactly India’s best friend ,is it?”

also from the same article: “The Bank has transformed from being a policeman who came in with a plan that was made up in Washington. They are our clients. We are no longer an inspector-general.”

implementation of cmp is being done in phases with central-state cooperation. cmp with its 2 main objectives: a. balanced development between urban-rural areas and b. infrastructural development have initiated the project on ‘need based’ approach…

Adides,I hope u read a similar article then in 2000 by the same world bank abt how the NDA’s policies were so so good.

As far as the infrastructural development is concerned,I have still to see any proper work done in the last 1 year, whereas we all saw the gr8 communication and roads boom in the previous goevrnment

previous govt went off the office with a record deficit and fiscal and spending budget are the governing mantras of this govt (coz we dont want to go the fareast asia 98 route) also as economic savvy PM/FM, this party understands the significance of measured and equitable growth.
you might not be witnessin much communication and roads boom coz this govt understands tht poor farmers commiting sucides coz of economic difficulties HAVE to take a priority over facilitating building malls in the outskirts of delhi
also it is the 1st year for this govt, so it takes time. compare their work with what nda did in the 1st year for equal comparison

i m sorry i did not read the articles in 2000 coz i was too young to subscibe to ft or wsj at tht time. also my priorities in 2000 were diff coz i was 13…

Well,I think the deficit has increased even further this year, dont u?Also,I seem to remember a report in the Indian Express which says the no. of suicides by farmers has actually increased in Andhra Pradesh over the last year, even with the promise of free power

U left one question unanswered.adides, wud u support the AlL-India Muslim League coz its an Anti-BJP party, even though its blatantly communal?
