How important are recommended classes when it comes to transfer? Like does a good GPA counter not having a lot of recommended classes?

Welcome!

If that is your real name, I encourage you to change it to something more anonymous.

Nervously waiting for decisions rn, and wanted some opinions. Im a transfer student with a 3.4 transfer GPA and applied for the music major. I havent seen anyone else on here talk about the music major but I was wondering if anyone knew anything? Im worried that even if my audition was good enough for the music faculty to want to admit me, that my gpa isnt enough to get in. i know its kind of like the lottery so idk if theres much anyone can say. also people are speculating today for decisions, but do transfer decisions usually come out after or at the same time as freshman decisions? thanks !

Transfer decisions usually come out a week or so after freshies, so you can relax for a little while longer. Music is a tough transfer into Poly. For Fall of 23, they had 25 applicants for 2 open spots, which means they offered acceptances to probably 4 or 5 depending on the average yield for music. So many things factor into admissions at Poly that it’s hard to say. A 3.4 proves that you can do college work, so if you have all the requirements, some or all of the recommended courses, and a good work/volunteer record that won’t be a disqualifying number. Leadership positions also help. For music I would have to imagine that your audition and instrument are just as important. Do you play something unique? i.e. bassoon, english horn, french horn, maybe even low brass. That would likely be viewed as a plus. If your CC happens to be Cuesta or Hancock, that is a huge plus. The Central Valley seems to get a little boost as well; SoCal or the Bay area not so much. I’d love to know what you play; I’m a wind player in the Cal Poly Symphony.

Hey! I am a singer, not very unique, probably more competitive than most music majors. I have the golden 4 with all A’s from Bakersfield College (crossing my fingers for a central valley boost). Have taken leadership positions in choir classes, done honor choirs and auditioned ensembles. I had reccommendations from my choir director and private voice instructor, and my audition went swimmingly! 2 of the panel members were nodding their heads yes after i finished my pieces so that boosted my confidence.

I transferred from BC too! What high school did you go to? BTW, you can start to worry in a couple of days. Freshie admissions just started dropping.

Are they sending out all transfer acceptances today? Or just a couple

I have seen some transfer admits today here and on Reddit. Usually they are sent all at once for the day.

I’ve seen a couple people who got in too but they were all music major. Do they usually hear back earlier?

Audition based majors usually have different timelines for decisions than regular majors.

I remember you from 2023 Thread when you got accepted for Biological Sciences.
Now, you’re in Cal Poly’s Symphony.

Wild at all the differences that occur in only 1 year.
How do you like Cal Poly?
Scenery walking across campus?
All the things you’ve experienced so far?

I don’t know what your major is but I’ve seen 2 people in previous years get accepted to OCOB (Orfalea College of Business) and both had a 2.84 GPA.

So it’s possible for anyone!

:tada: Congratulations! :tada:

In a week, check your financial aid on your portal under ā€œMoney Mattersā€ and click the year on the left side of your screen. The year is actually a link.

It will also tell you if you were accepted as a ā€œCal Poly Scholar.ā€
Lots of benefits from that designation.

:tada: Welcome to Cal Poly & the Mustang Family! :tada:
