D also deferred and then waitlisted for engineering (interest in bme). Just under 4.0 W gpa (a few lower grades via dual enrollment in weed out classes at state flagship u), 34 ACT, strong ECs and solid essays. I was thinking it was a combination of competitive major and those few lower grades, but now seeing everyone else’s results hard to know. These kids really have it tough. It honestly seems like you have to make a very strategic choice with early decision if you want a solid chance of getting into a competitive college these days.
My D is OOS and was accepted, RD, to Case Western Reserve University. I’m not going to post stats because it just crates “why her/him and not me” when it may be a number of factors that entered in. I’m far from a believer in the admissions process because it is anything but transparent, however, for CWRU, I do not think it is any one particular factor that goes into a an admissions decision. There are universities that primarily focus on SAT or ACT (although stating it uses a holistic process), but I do not believe CWRU is one of them. I believe CWRU no doubt applies a holistic process.
I also think intended major and/or intended career focuses into the admissions process. While there may be many, many applications for STEM, there may only be few for biology, public health, psychology, history with an interest geared towards dental,a Ph.D in a discipline, law, or some other non-STEM major. There may be an effort to balance the class for the university itself.
Of course, all IMO.
Accepted RD! I did not apply EA.

Per the CWRU website regarding scholarships based upon the essay prompts:
Awarding
We award each scholarship to a single student annually, unless otherwise noted.
Winners will be notified of their award by April 1.
If you receive a scholarship in the amount of tuition, this replaces any previous scholarship and/or grant award from the university.
Are scholarships/grants shown on 2019/2020 package guaranteed for all four years or only the first year?

I didn’t receive anything about financial aid in my acceptance letter. What does this mean? (as in, there was no link to see my financial aid decision at all)
Waitlisted. Screw 'em. We’ve already got some great offers.
S waitlisted
3.83 GPA at IL public school that was voted #1 in the country by niche, 1560 SAT, 800 Physics SAT, Captain debate team, head tutor, went to Nationals for debate, placed second at state for debate. National Merit finalist. So disappointed for him. Don’t understand. :0(
@lightyboy - my son has similar stats. Also waitlisted. Don’t know what they are looking for.
Accepted!
Applied for nursing major
FA: got 23k scholarship and CWRU grant
SAT: 1490
GPA: 3.7 UW/4.36 W
really appreciated the personalization at the end of the letter
@GingerLand - have her accept a spot on the waitlist. If she was yield protected, they may come back with a good offer in a few weeks. Chin up! Where else has she applied?
I couldn’t agree more. I really thought we would see acceptance letters pouring in with our son’s stats and it’s not happening. I just don’t know what to think! He is waiting to hear from his first choice school this Friday, the 22nd and I’m so afraid it will be a no from them. This is excruciating!
@light boy S19 also waiting for 2 on Friday. CWRU was in his top 3, wait listed. We visited from NE (state), 3.85, 35 ACT, multiple AP, 2 solid ECs. CS/neuro interests.
He doesn’t have the awards and extras for the tippy top schools and thought he was applying to schools in range. Pretty disappointing and makes the wait until Friday all the more stressful.
Very nice to see a personal message within a admissions decision. Very few schools do that
D19 accepted, lukewarm on the financial aid package. We shall see. She has 4 more still to hear from.
We were shocked that our son was waitlisted. 4.35 GPA, 1530 SAT, 13 APs, extremely strong ECs, and a legacy many times over (mother, grandparents, cousins, etc). Luckily he has been accepted to several higher rated schools (Michigan, UVA, Willam and Mary). A friend of his with much lower stats got in early action with a $20,000/year scholarship. Considering CWR doesn’t even require extra essays (so he wasn’t rejected for something he wrote), the only possible explanation is that CWR is waitlisting students they think are using CWR as a back-up, and are not serious about going. This is consistent with several other extremely strong applicants that were also waitlisted (as noted by others in prior comments). Luckily, in our case they were right - Our son was not seriously considering CWR. That said, I feel really sorry for those with stellar stats that are not getting in and really wanted to go. The admissions game has truly become absurd.
What major is the hardest to get in?
Decision: Accepted
SAT: 1550
GPA (UW): 3.58
GPA (W): 4.85/6 (14 AP classes)
State: Texas
Major: History
Did you apply for FA?: Yes
Honors/NMF/etc?: Orchestra, piano, lots of music and not much else. 790 on Lit SAT and 760 in World His.
Scholarships/Aid: 22.5k per year
Could anybody provide some info on the Baker-Nord scholars program? Thanks.
@Trixy34 Thanks. D got rejected from Bowdoin yesterday. That hurt. Given today we expect Tufts and Vassar to be rejects. That leaves UMASS and Union. Her Oberlin interview went well, but that’s what she thought about Bowdoin.
