My friend told me about this about and just wanted to pass it on.
If you have a Palm/HP webOS device: Pre, Pixi, check out the app “forums.” It’s not free (cost $3) though but it does have access to literally thousands of forums.
You can add collegeconfidential as one of your favorites and the forum will be formatted to your phone’s screen.
When I’m viewing all threads w/ unread posts and click “more threads” at the bottom, a lot of the same threads show up again and it’s annoying to have to read them all again to see where the actual unread posts are…
I’m using 30 posts per page as my basic setting if that matters. Everything else works great, but it seems to have some trouble with showing threads with unread posts…
iOS 4.3.1
And another question: When I click “mark unread threads as read”, does it only mark the threads in the “current window” read, or all new posts that aren’t shown on my screen?
From my P.O.V. it looks like all threads are marked as read, even though I haven’t refreshed the list. That might also be a problem, because I don’t want to be marking threads as read before I’ve even seen their titles.
@johannes1430 Ok, if I have this correct when you are grabbing more threads from the bottom you are seeing some of the same appended on the list. I think what is happening here is the threads that are repeated are actually threads that were updated within a pretty close proximity of time, however, the way they are displayed makes them look like they are the same. So someone updates a thread at 3:00 and you see that on the list, then you grab more current threads, and now you see another one with the same topic name, user name, and time of 3:00, but in reality it was another update to the thread at, say 3:02, but the way it is displayed does not make that clear. Yea, that is not ideal at all. Thank you for pointing that out. I will take a look and see what we can do about it for the future. Unfortunately there is no setting or anything I can point you to that would help, but maybe it helps just knowing that it is really an update and not just a repeat.
@johannes1430 It should be marking all threads read regardless of what is in your current window. That option is based off of the time at which you click the button so any unread thread from that time and before will be marked as read. I can see why would might want to keep up on the Latest list, but maybe there is another option for you. If you frequent certain forums you can navigate directly to those forums and get their latest updates directly. Then if you use the Mark as Read option while inside the forum it will only mark those threads read from inside the forum. I know this does not solve your problem, but might help you from losing threads that you may have wanted to read.
@johannes1430 My pleasure and thank you for using the mobile app. Also, we have an update coming out soon that includes some bug fixes and handles stability better so keep a lookout although it may not address anything we talked about here. Once Apple approves it it should show up as an update.
I want to rescind my recommendation of the CC iPhone app. I just downloaded the update which listed “stability” and other “bug fixes” as the reason for the update. It turns out the real reason was to put annoying and relatively large ads on the bottom of the screen. They are distracting and even flash every few seconds! I would not recommend getting the app anymore. Also, it was kind of shady to lie about the update to trick loyal users into downloading it.
@NotAClue Actually, the new version was updated by many revisions and stability and other bug fixes were addressed. In some cases even pieces of the UI were changed and updated. Yes, we definitely added in the ads, but this is new to us and we are still trying to determine how well the ads would be accepted and also how much traffic we can get this way. This is a free application and we provide that to you, our users, as a service at no charge at definite cost to us in development and resources. We also have ads on this site and the mobile skin as well so this is really nothing new here. I will admit that we could have provided more information on the update though so this is a lesson learned. All in all though in order for us to continue to provide you with free apps and future updates we must explore ways to gain some revenue. I hope you can understand this position.
@rom828 Hi there rom828! I am glad that you are enjoying the app. So when you say “scroll to the most current page using the page numbers at the top” are you referring to the page numbers at the very top left of the page that come after “Page”? I also attached an image with page numbers 1 and 2. If this is what you are referring to you should be able to press on any number and it will jump to the page. The most current page will always be the highest number in the list. So in the example I provided the most current page is 2. Does this answer your question?
Thank you. Yes. That is what I’m referring to. My problem is when there are several hundred pages, I’m on page 112 and I want to get to page 115. I see the arrows on the far right but I cannot successfully tap on them without hitting the previous page number. I was unsure if there was a hidden scroll bar I was unaware of to view the most recent pages. My biggest problem is that I’m on CC WAY too much on my laptop, iPad & iPhone
@rom828 Ah yes, I understand your issue better now. Ok, that is a good point in cases where there are many pages of discussion. Something to think about on our end.
Hi! I am very very new to this website and I got the app yesterday, but I love it already. Quick question though. When you’re in the “more” section and you click edit, it goes to the configure page. I would expect that you could move the icons around like on an iPhone and they could be rearranged. However, when I do that, the icons don’t move at all. Well, I can drag the icon, but the base of it still stays where it was. Am I doing this correctly, or is there another way to configure the sections? Thank you!
Hi there MWcollege12, that section allows you to change the items that are in your bottom toolbar. So, drag and drop the icons down to a position on your toolbar and you should see it update immediately. Click “Done” in the upper right hand corner and now you should be able to navigate to your new section from the toolbar instead of having to navigate through other means. Make sense?
After latest iPhone app update, I’ve lost the ability to have search results listed by post (only topic listings are returned) and I have lost the ability to subscribe to forums. Also, in Favorites, there is no longer any tab for forums (just topics). Please fix/revert. Thanks!
@cbagzdad Hi there, thank you for your post. I am already looking into how forum subscriptions were removed. I will let you know once I find something.
Thanks. Also, please restore the option to remain logged in. Since last “update,” I have to re-login whenever I leave the app. And please don’t forget to restore option to return search results by post rather than by topic. It doesn’t help to know that a keyword appears somewhere in a 32-page topic thread. App was far better before the last update.
