Chance Me: Boston resident, 3.59UW, 32 ACT, White female, biology major looking to go out of state

I brought up U of Utah upthread and explained why it meets your criteria. Life sciences are strong there, and they’re still taking applications. You certainly can’t beat the skiing. Strong bio, great school spirit, easy travel access, and great affordability with the path to residency. If the Boulder deferral is a big disappointment, Utah could be a great alternative. If you might choose UofU over UO, applying could be a great idea.

Seconding U Utah !
Cal Poly Humboldt is especially well-known for biological and environmental sciences, still accepting applications (though not jocky).
WWU is accepting apps too (though their preferred deadline was Jan 31, they’re still considering applicants at this time)
If you liked Tulane, Loyola NO is nearby and has an exchange with them - not as selective but a decent college.
FIU HONORS?

You’d get automatic in-state tuition at Louisville. They have rolling admissions, a med school (so good biology), and a good honors program.

I second the recommendations to apply to Utah. If you want outdoorsy type stuff, U of Idaho and U of Montana are rolling and you’d get auto-merit.

Mizzou is also rolling and meets your preferred criteria. Their auto-merit would only be $8500 for you, however.

Some schools I don’t think have been mentioned (at least recently) include:

Michigan State has rolling admissions for people who missed the 2/1 deadline (source). It has tons of sports enthusiasm and is one of the highest producers of alumni who go on to earn a PhD in biology. As indicated in the source, it’s rolling so long as there’s space availability, so I’d check with admissions first before working on the app.

Iowa State has Big 10 sports, rolling admissions, and an April 1 deadline to apply for its honors college.

U. of Arizona is still taking apps, too. If you qualify for its honors college, it gets great reviews.

All three schools produce a lot of students who go on for doctorates in biological sciences, meaning that their departments should definitely be strong enough for your interests.

Ooh, forgot to add Colorado State which I’ve heard great things about. Produces good numbers of bio PhDs as well. After 2/1 it’s rolling admissions, but 2/1 was the last date for full consideration for scholarships. But if you’re interested, the sooner you apply, the likelier the chances to still get merit aid.

Southwest: People have good things to say about UN-Reno and U New Mexico if you want sure things. Look into the Honors college deadlines.

Deep South: UT Chatanooga has grown in reputation and has an excellent Honors college. The program had a required weekend on Feb 17 though so I’m not sure it’s worth it even if Honors, the town&university are cool, especially if you get into UTK+a scholars program.
Georgia State&Honors college are accepting applications till March 30. Located in hopping Atlanta.

Is Penn State too “North”? I believe there are still some spaces in the following majors if checking Summer start. Straight Bio wouldn’t be worth it (branch campus).

:crossed_fingers: with UUtah, ULouisville, and 1-2 other apps, you should find yourself with many good choices come May 15/June 1st. (The May1 decision date has typically been rolled back due to the FAFSA chaos).

When do you hear from your pending applications?

FYI - those dates are what the school publishes as sort of the “by this date”. Tulane posted RD on 3/8 last year - well before the 4/1 date. If you’re interested to do so, you can look back at the threads from last year to see when they posted decisions. Most schools are pretty consistent year to year.

Was reading the thread and am wondering, since Clemson is a school that is on our list as well - why do you think this applicant is unlikely to get admitted there given that she is at their 75th percentile ACT and they have an over 40% admission rate for women? Thanks.

Well she was waitlisted at Clemson so @tsbna44 was basically correct with his prediction.

Clemson puts a lot of weigh on Class Rank and GPA. The 3.59 is low. According to CDS 2022-23 enrolled students 91% had a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

Clemson uses a weighted GPA for admissions. This is the GPA scale used by all South Carolina high schools. If you are out-of-state, your GPA will be converted to SCUGPA.

We would be out of state as well…same ACT, a bit higher GPA. Wonder if they give any preference to South Carolina residents.

Yes Clemson gives preference to SC students, as it is one of two of SC’s land grant public unis (the other SC State U).

Incoming class of 2023 was 51% from SC, while Class of 2027’s in-state acceptance rate was 91%, and overall acceptance rate was 38%…meaning OOS is much lower than the 38% overall:

updates:

waitlisted from college of Charleston (i’m really surprised but i think it’s because i didn’t do their optional essay?? maybe??)

waitlisted from utk, which i’m pretty upset about and really hope i get off the waitlist…

if anyone has had any success getting in off the waitlist/ tips for what to include in an email of continued interest please let me know as i am now waitlisted at three schools, two of which are in my top 5!

Do you have new test scores, new grades, new awards?
Yes, I’m very surprised at CoC’s decision.
For now, it’s okay to feel sad and do something distracting and fun. Watch a comedy (ey, Young Sheldon and Ghosts are on tonight!)…or horror or romcom whatever you like, favorite ice cream with friends, the works. And tomorrow, back to work.
1° 1st draft LOCI for CoC and UTK
2° if you’re feeling worried, perhaps looking into 1-2 less selective colleges but similar enough to Tulane or Clemson that could work as alternates (though I think you already have good choices so I don’t think it’s necessary). Perhaps read over this thread to find ideas. Perhaps for UTK and CoC, look carefully at ALL majors offered, write down all that are biology adjacent (forensic science, biological anthropology, epidemiology, whatever  ), and tell them this WL is a good opportunity for you to let them know you’re interested in a new major.

@lolocacch I noticed that Michigan State has a major in Genomics and Molecular Genetics. I thought that might be of interest since you mentioned that you were interested in genetics.

hey guys! another quick update, i got into boulder!! I am super excited as i loved boulder when I toured and could totally see myself there. Thank you all for the extra school recommendations I really appriciate it!

Congratulations on the Boulder acceptance, and thanks for the update! Would love to know where you decide to enroll. Do you plan to visit Oregon before making your decision?

Yes! I am definitely going to make an effort to get out there to see Oregon before making a final decision. I also want to get responses back from Richmond, Auburn, and Tulane and wait a bit to see if i get off the waitlist at Clemson and/or UTK before completely committing to Boulder. That being said, even if I do get into any of those schools, it would still be hard for me to choose between them and Boulder.
