Does anyone know more details about this program? Do you think participating in it would significantly impact the experience at Choate?
I do not know a lot about it. What I do know is that it is an Honor Program and your “mentor” is the Headmaster. You are also given additional money to explore colleges and other academic programs. I think it gives you a view into the inner circle? Anyway, it certainly looks AWESOME when you are trying to get into those top colleges. Did you get it? if so, congrats!
Look up the thread “Scholarships at Prep Schools”
Thanks @mexusa. I saw in mentioned on the Scholarships thread and just wondered more details about what it would mean for a student.
Not sure if you’ve seen this already, but this is the description on the Choate website (http://www.choate.edu/page.cfm?p=534):
“This program is designed to attract, select and provide support to outstanding scholars each year, regardless of their family’s ability to qualify for financial assistance. These students are chosen by the admission committee and are considered to be among the most competitive applicants in the admission pool in that given admission cycle. In addition to regular gatherings with the Headmaster and the Program Coordinator, Headmaster’s Scholars receive various stipends, among them a $10,000 grant to participate in an experience that further nurtures creativity, feeds innovation, or develops leadership skills.”
Although I have not heard of this particular scholarship (it seems new?), I am a recipient of another, somewhat similar scholarship. It’s amazing! I don’t think these scholarships impacts day-to-day life very significantly, but on the occasions when you are interested in some out-of-school activity that has high tuition/fees, I think it is very nice to know you have a means of taking these opportunities. For me personally, I used the stipend from my scholarship to participate in summer programs I would not have been able to otherwise.
Sorry I can’t give you more specifics, but the Financial Aid office at Choate is very helpful in general; I’d strongly recommend talking to them if you have concerns.
Thanks @weiqian. I guess I was wondering about the mentoring more than the stipends – the regular gatherings part of the explanation above. It’s hard to imagine a school culture and whether such a thing would be a big deal to a student, but it’s quite reassuring to hear that your scholarship is amazing! I’m delighted that you got to participate in great summer experiences.
@kalibab3 That’s my bad, sorry
I guess I cannot help you out much, then.
It was helpful @weiqian and I appreciate it!
