UGA released their decisions at 4pm. So I think anytime after 4pm tomorrow is fair game.
Well the table generator is not working now on the link - it says failure on SAS server!
Does USC look more for higher test scores or GPA?
Good luck to all of you - I’m a parent of a 2021 graduate who is watching this thread as UofSC is my daughter’s first choice since she visited earlier in the year. I’m so excited for tomorrow for all of you.
I was reading through last year’s decision thread and there was so much stress over the mailed acceptances (took forever to reach some people due to the holidays); I think portal updates, even though they are coming a month later than last year, is a huge improvement over the idea of an acceptance being lost in the mail.
I’m wondering if they had so many more applications due to taking the Common App that they couldn’t comfortably go through all of them before this December deadline and that’s why they they are going to do a stats only review this go around. They probably intended to do a holistic review and had to make a mid-cycle switch due to overwhelming numbers of applications.
It will be interesting to see their yield too - I wonder if they will get the acceptance to commit ratio correct? There are probably a lot of kids who check the box to apply who have no intention of attending
Easy for me to say, of course, since I don’t have a daughter applying this cycle. I would be as stressed as the rest of you if she were. In fact, I’m stressed already wondering if this is going to up the stats for oos admittance (which we are). Sigh. Changes are tough.
@afbratmama from what I remember SC schools unweighted are based on 5.0 scale. So it would make sense it’s more like an avg. 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. I think that’s why SC recalculates
@3kids2dogs The out-of-state stats will definitely go up as in state ones will due to more competition. Since Georgia Tech started accepting the common app in 2013, applications have more than doubled. The 75th percentile AC T score in 2013 is now the 25th percentile. Applicants continue to get stronger and stronger. Out of state acceptance for Georgia Tech has dropped to 14%. I would be surprised if the same thing does not happen to USC. Georgia Tech offers honest no merit and state or out of state and like I would be surprised if the same thing does not happen to USC. Georgia Tech offers almost no merit in state or out of state unlike USC so USC’s jump may even be more profound. I have a junior who may be applying next year so it will be interesting to see
If the hack is legit, my DS is not in for EA - still getting “no record found.” GPA 4.2 ACT 32 OOS; double legacy. Used the Common App - USC is his first choice.
Are you saying you did not apply for EA?
@jillifam Same here. Trying not to worry. Also fairly high stats, clearly above USC averages. OOS, EA.
Is the EA review strictly grades, or did they review everything including resume items
not sure where you getting those numbers from BUT let me explain the SC GPA to you. It is on a 6.0 scale. Regular classes are 5.0, Honors 5.5 and AP 6.0. Obviously you will never get a GPA that is even close to a 6.0 because you can’t take only AP classes in 4 yrs of High School. The top students are maxing at around a 5.3ish GPA. Also, it is exact by number grade, meaning a 94 in an AP class would calculate at a 5.4. Hope that makes sense. My daughter is 5 in her class of 390 and her GPA is a 5.27 with a 34 ACT in a SC High School. Hope that helps!
@jillifam , I don’t have much faith in the hack. I think it may be random kids that are recognized, as your son’s stats sound great (too high for outright rejection).
I imagine that perception of specific High Schools and their rank/rigor plays a role, as does geographic diversity. A lot of those variables will remain mysterious from where we all sit.
.
I’m saying he applied EA, & if the hack works then he was either deferred or rejected.
Adding on to @3kids2dogs questions about yield with this presumed surge in applications because of the Common App…
Will this affect UofSC’s method of reviewing and selecting applicants for Top Scholars and the Honors College? In the past, they have invited a set number of in state and OOS applicants to interview for Top Scholars. Will they increase those numbers, assuming their yield will be lower? I kind of doubt this. Will they place more emphasis on demonstrated interest? Or will the process remain the same, so they can see what adjustments they need to make, if any, for subequent years?
Hi there.
The response I get with the hack is “students must first claims their account before using this feature…”
Is that what all
Of you are referencing?
What do you mean they add one point for an AP and .5 for a honor class?
If I ended up with an 85 in an honors class- what does that equate to? If i got an 88 in an AP class what does that equate to?
I honestly do not know how USC calculates but in a SC High school an 88 in an AP class is a 4.8 and a 85 in an honors class would be a 4.0. Hope that helps. However I thought I read that USC uses a 4.5 scale for honors and a 5.0 scale for AP and I am not sure if they use exact numbers. This is just the way SC HS’s calculate their weighted GPA.

Thanks for responding. The “Hack” it read that he has to reclaim his account. I don’t know the USC ID number. He applied EA, Does that mean deferred or denial?
High schools in SC do use the point scale. On my kids transcripts, all it shows are the scores they received for that class for that year (there’s no A-F grade listed on there). So it is like what some of the posts above have mentioned where a regular class 94 is 4.4, honors class 94 is 4.9, and AP class 94 is 5.4. SC does this because of our in-state scholarship system where ranking matters. In this method, you’ll rarely see 2 students with the same exact gpa.
