I’ll let you know if I hear anything. I posted on FB and someone responded that it is extremely limited. My D loves Clemson, but the only way she’ll consider it now is if she gets a global start spot.
My understanding is that a closed major is a major where they take limited students because they want to cap the number of kids/year in the major. For instance, my son applied to Sports Communication and we were told the goal was to enroll 60-70 kids into the major a year. Please, someone correct me if I have that wrong!
I wonder if a student can request a change to a closed major? My D was admitted for her second choice major but would prefer Communication.
Again, my understanding (not sure if it’s correct) is that it’s also a little more challenging to transfer into a closed major because they have to have the space (ie: someone would need to leave the major to allow someone new to enter, if that makes sense).
Does anyone understand how Summer Start students are selected?
My student was accepted at UNC with honors college, as well as NC State and Virginia Tech with Honors colleges, and Presidental scholarship at Richmond.
I’m guessing since they got summer start, honors college Clemson is out of the picture and any merit opportunities?
Good luck to all- it was a competitive year!
Here are stats:
OOS, deferred early action, Political Science major
Got Summer Start
4.7 weighted, 3.92 unweighted
9 APs plus two DE’s, other classes primarily honors
President of two clubs, loads of other extra curriculars, including global experience in education curriculum development and training.
Senate page and Governor page programs
Youth and Government statewide officer
Did your student submit test scores? That’s a commonality I am seeing for summer starts. I could be totally wrong.
Not global summer start , but daughter accepted last year ( class of 2028) for Summer Start. OOS Business as well and currently attending Can’t say enough good things about Summer Start. Had such a huge jumpstart academically, socially , etc. by the time Fall start came around . Her current core group of friends were mostly from Summer Start, got to know campus , time management , and a lot of fun as well! Got some credits out of the way, too. Truly a blessing in disguise!
Yes- they submitted and in hindsight probably should not have. 1340 SAT
That’s a decent score though. It sounds like they have excellent options between Va Tech and UNC. Are they leaning towards one of those? I’m not sure that I would pick summer start at Clemson if those were two of my other choices.
Thanks for the info. I’ve heard only great things about the on campus summer start. Did your daughter stay in the same dorm with the same roommate when summer was over?
Hi there, if merit wasn’t mentioned in the acceptance letter then it’s probably not going to happen. Some students may qualify for merit sophomore if they have exemplary grades.
wow, she must be EXTREMELY close to campus. most of the complexes 3-4 miles out (still on the CAT line) are $500-600 per BR/BA per month, and they are fairly nice. My son lives here, just across the lake and a 10 minute CAT shuttle ride to the library/core area. The Flats at the Pier | Clemson Condos Property Management
She did not stay in same dorm and roommate selection for Fall happened before summer start so couldn’t change it to live with Summer Start roommates after meeting them. However, she will be rooming with one of them next year off campus. On campus housing only guaranteed as a freshman and timeslots for picking dorms is based on when admissions application was submitted. So basically moving off campus after freshman year. Was a stressful process but ended up in the Geer , which is one of the Shoeboxes that had recently renovated bathrooms . Old school dorms but very social and great location. Right by football stadium and close to everything.
Ugh, she’s at Earle for the last two years, she saved some money last year by leaving her car at home, so $1000 cheaper for car insurance, and parking fees. However, she was given a budget, anything over is on her dime. She was in Epoch sophomore year but disliked the location (didn’t have a car then). I mistakenly thought being in SC it would be cheaper, but she wanted to live with friends, she needed to find poorer friends! Her siblings who attended college in NJ paid much less (not nice places, but they survived).
100% -daughter accepted to Summer Start last year and absolutely had huge jumpstart socially, academically , learning time management , knowing way around campus. etc. come Fall. Highly recommend ! Had a great time at the Lake and her current core group of friends all from Summer Start.
I hear you- there is definitely a range of places. I can say, that even though it’s on the lower end of the price range, my son’s place is a heck of a lot nicer than I lived in during off-campus college years!
My daughter’s apartments at Clemson are nicer than anywhere I’ve ever lived! Our family of 7 lived in a house with 1 1/2 baths, now she’s used to having her own, plus a walk in closet not much smaller than 1 of our bedrooms! My husband rented a enclosed front porch in college.
I can relate- in order to live on the beach in San Diego, my room in shared house was in a walk in closet, with a hand built raised bunk and desk below! Our kids have it good…
Haha. Right now, my son is trying to decide between Clemson, NC State and San Diego State (still waiting for 4 more decisions). Maybe I’ll see if apartment options will sway him
all great options, but I can say from direct experience in both regions, cost of living best in SC!
