Cornell Class of 2028 Official Thread

My son was also accepted and trying to decide between Purdue and Cornell for Engineering. Tough decision. What factors, other than financial, are making yours lean one way or the other?

Anyone have numbers on ILR waitlists? I haven’t found much looking at past threads and stuff online

Sorry to hear about your daughter. I think it’s much harder for girls to get into top schools these days. My daughter was in a similar situation 2 years ago with Dartmouth (graduated cum laude from Hotchkiss, etc.) and was similarly devastated. She took the transfer option to Cornell and is there now. Keep in mind that Cornell has a reasonable transfer acceptance rate. She also applied as a transfer to Georgetown (waitlisted the 1st time) and Northwestern (did not apply 1st time) during her freshman year at BC and got into both. So transferring is a very viable option even going into the sophomore year at many top schools.

My daughter took the TO to Cornell (Brooks School). The word on the street is that if you meet the requirements, no one has really heard of people not getting in. So not guaranteed, but close to it if you meet the requirements. They send the TO info/forms a little later - just be patient. It’s a great option with lots of TOs each year with their own orientation!

Purdue is SO strong in the overall structure of their engineering program and support of students, that they really aren’t second to anyone on that measure. Cornell has a great reputation on this, but we have more to learn about Cornell in that arena. The other measure we are investigating is the co-op and internship opportunities available. Again, Purdue is very strong in this area and graduates are about as work-ready coming out of Purdue as any other engineering school. If we have an area of concern on this for Cornell, it may be the support in this area. However, our daughter is Biomedical with a special interest in neural engineering, so research (as opposed to strictly work experience) will be a big part of her education. Cornell is a stellar research institution. And, truthfully, you can’t ignore that one of the two is Ivy League.
I expect that we will find both schools to be fairly equal once this assessment is complete, so it really will come down to money.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts as well.

I PM’d you. Look for a green circle near your avatar.

(If others are having the same dilemma, we are a Cornell family (both parents, grandparents, aunt/uncle including engineering), with a child who found Purdue engineering to be a better fit for her. Feel free to PM me with any questions).

Congrats! Message me if you have any questions. I have one that graduated from Cornell engineering (CS) and one currently in bio sciences. BME was a consideration for 2/3 of my sons so we had looked into it at many schools. We did learn that it is a bit of an outlier when it comes to engineering schools. You really have to look at BME specifically and not just engineering stats. My bio major was able to get a research opportunity at Cornell as a freshman which has been really rewarding and my CS grad got an amazing opportunity in NYC right after he graduated.

Congrats to everyone and be proud of wherever you’re going. No one school will define your success, but it’s really what you make of it that does. Best of luck everyone!

@winprgrmr and others: If anyone wants to discuss engineering, feel free to PM me. DS is a first year in COE and loves it. We’re African American, so I can offer additional insight for any students of color that are considering attending. We did a lot of research on engineering programs and PWIs for students of color before deciding to ED to Cornell, and it proved to be a great fit. Not every top engineering school is a good environment for BIPOC students, so be sure to do some research and take that into consideration if you are not in the majority.

ETA: You don’t need to be a person of color to message me about engineering. I was just adding that as a potential consideration if that applies to you.

Are there any HBHS majors in this thread admitted to CHE? Pondering the pre-med path pros and cons.

Thank you. Much appreciated!

I tried to PM you but your profile is set to private. If your student happens to be in biomedical engineering at Cornell, please PM me so I can ask your advice.

Sorry about that! DS is in electrical and computer engineering, but I sent you a PM anyway.

I created a thread for those who are considering the Transfer Option offer!

We received same. Wondering how many kids get TO and if it is guaranteed?

THe TO letter doesn’t say it is guaranteed.

We also received and are considering it. TO to CALS. challenge is no financial aid package until next year, right? And it is not guanteed like BU TO.
