Defer W&M...Chances UVA EA?

I applied to William and Mary ED and was deferred. Only 10% of deferred students are admitted, so I am trying to move on.
I am in-state.
I am a Caucasian female.
GPA: 4.08 weighted
APs: Human, Euro, Stat, Eng Lang, US, Bio, Calc AB, Psych, Eng Lit, Gov
Rank: 22% but I go to an extremely competitive public high school
ACT: 30
SAT: 1310 (new SAT)
ECs: Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient (highest award of girl scouting), Student Director of Winter Play, Historian of the International Thespian Society and Drama Club, Executive Board of Student Council, President of Gifted Advisory Board, on competitive one act team that won second in the state, traveled to Ireland on religious pilgrimage with a group
Teacher rec should be great.
Not a legacy, but do have an aunt that attended.
Essay was pretty good.
Do I have a prayer? I just need to know if UVA is out of the picture as well.
Additionally, any suggestions for schools similar to W&M or UVA for me to apply to RD?

I think you have a good shot! I’m a little surprised they didn’t accept you ED.

If you’re looking at VA schools, consider Wash and Lee in Lexington, it’s a small liberal arts college in the mountains.

you will get into uva over washington and lee. decent shot at uva

I’m assuming you mean Virginia state schools? There are lots of other schools that you may like…a lot of people feel that Mary Washington has a similar feel to W&M, historical town, brick buildings, small school. JMU is also a great choice…probably more similar in feel to UVa than W&M as it is much bigger, but also not that far geographically…also has a pretty campus with mountain views. I also know a lot of people really like Christopher Newport if they like the feel of a small campus, friendly people, beautiful campus. Good luck. Wash & Lee is private, so it’s different, but super selective. Good luck!

It is always good to make sure you have options. For schools similar to UVa, I’d look at U. of Delaware. It is 2/3rds out of state students. It offers similar academic programs, is a similar size, has similar social offerings, has a similar campus, and is in a similar town. U. Del does offer some need based and merit aid, although they are not as generous with oos need based aid as UVa.

Went through this same scenario with my DS. He was also deferred ED at W&M and eventually denied. In the end he was ok with that because he had visited Christopher Newport several time and really began to get comfortable there. He is a student there now and loves it. The last two incoming Freshman classes there have had the third highest GPA average of all incoming Freshman classes at Virginia public schools (i would guess UVA and W&M are the top two). If you are looking for a smaller school like W&M I would suggest applying to CNU. I would also suggest UMW. I don’t know what your chances are at UVA, but know that many people will get into UVA and not W&M and vice versa - as the schools are looking for different sorts of students.
