So do you think Baxter could have been the one who pushed the valet?
Lord Grantham also played pirate on episode of Doctor Who. This weeks episode featured 4 Doctor Who actors Love Violet. Sick of her butler.
OK, are we to expect that we are soon to see the last of Sarah Bunting? And what exactly is Gillingham going to do to “keep” Mary?
After tonight I am leaning towards the theory that Gillingham killed his valet. His anger at Mary in the park was not the mark of a stable person, IMO.
I had been wondering who would be the victim of Robert’s explosion at dinner since they teased it in the promos. Can’t say I blamed him. Poor Tom looked as if he was visibly wounded by Sarah Bunting’s appalling behavior. Did love Daisy’s little speech, though.
Dang! I have been so good and got a week behind so that I could watch the rerun at 8pm and now y’all are tempting me to watch the new episode as well tonight!
FYI, the Downton Abbey cast won Best Cast for TV Drama Series at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. They seemed rather surprised. It was nice to see them win.
I’m already tired of the Russians and I’m only 20 minutes in. They treat them like pets.
I’m liking Cora this episode. She is actually a real person!
So who predicted Thomas had gone off to get anti-homosexual therapy?
And why did Anna go to Piccadilly? Was it just to see for her own eyes? Or is something else up?
Who is that guy stalking Anna?
I’m getting tired of Grantham treating Cora like an idiot.
Now I’m mad at Gillingham! Grrrrrr
@saintfan - later in the episode, they say since Greene’s death, the police have assigned a private detective to hang out at Gillingham’s home to watch for any strange activity as the investigation continues.
OK - now Miss Bunting is annoying me too
While quite controlling and unreasonable to modern eyes, Gillingham’s reaction would not have been considered as a sign of instability as much considering the social and gender norms of the time.
If anything, considering the norms and admittedly double-standards around sex and marriage, Gillingham’s anger would have been considered quite justified whereas Mary’s deciding not to marry him would have been considered breaking a promise along with being a serious transgression on her part.
Unfortunately, also par for the course for those of his and Cora’s generation. During their formative years, women were considered more akin to minors than adults. Reasoning which was often used by the establishment to justify denying women the right to vote and reasons why suffragettes had to protest and fight hard for their right.
Ironic considering Lord Grantham has proven himself to be quite the idiot at times…such as losing large fortunes or feeling Ponzi was a viable business proposition.
Then again, he does redeem himself somewhat in the intellect department in this episode by making an accurate assessment of how the harshness of the Versailles treaty played a critical part in the chaotic violent nature of Weimar German society.
@cobrat . . . it isn’t that the women here don’t know about the history and experience of being women
What if Lord Gillingham threatens to expose Mary’s dalliance with him unless she marries him? That would be rather unsporting. And certainly not the best basis on which to form a marriage.
Will Isabel accept Lord Merton’s proposal? I sure hope so. I think she’s the most interesting character in the whole thing.
I agree that Daisy’s little speech was wonderful. It’s great to see her grow as a person because of her education. Helping Mrs. Patmore write a letter about Archie is terrific.
Who thinks Edith is going to kill herself? I can’t see anyway out of all of this misery. It’s sounding like Mr. Gregson was killed several years earlier by the Brown Shirts. With him dead and her not able to see Marigold, what’s left for Edith?
Does anyone remember what year it was when Mr. Gregson disappeared? I’m reading about the Brown Shirts and am curious.
I do so love a good gossip after every Downton Abbey episode!
The threats to expose her were most unsettling. It will be interesting as isn’t he all title and no money at this point? I can see “Granny” riding to the rescue with some pointed but veiled comments to him.
Gillingham doesn’t sound like a murderer but he sure does sound like a stalker. Watch out, Mary!
I like the russians but would love some subtitles as my crew keeps talking when I’m trying to listen - must be authentic because I couldn’t understand a thing! I love the Merton part - she acted it so well. I hope Lord Full-of-Himself Grantham gets kicked in the pants by Violet soon, what an ass, given his history (being stupid) and hers (coming to save him, forgive him, whatevs). Glad Bunting got hers and esp the come back from Mary “satisfied?”. Edith needs to move on, preferably to a new series, reminds me of that middle Brady Bunch girl whats-her-name saying “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!”
