Downton Abbey

I forgot about Lavinia’s money.

Boy, inherited money on Downton Abbey seems to jump from person to person almost like measles. ;))

The inheritance stuff is to me right out of Wodehouse: someone always has an uncle with the “oof”. It’s kind of ridiculous. Titles certainly jumped around but many were severed from the land because of that fear.

One tidbit I’ve loved is that Jane Austen’s brother Edward was adopted by wealthy relatives of their father, the Knights. (Thus, I’ve assumed Mr. Knightley in Sense and Sensibility.) They had no children and the Austens had a few extra. The small house in Chawton where Jane and Cassandra lived belonged to Edward. In other words, I’d say it was more likely that money be passed around relatives than to a fiancés family.

There were lots of mixings of old money and new in Wodehouse. Right close to home didn’t the aunts both come from titled families and marry wealthy industrialists with new money who could actually afford to run one of those homes? They resided in places purchased form other families. I’m just surprised that Downton hasn’t used the “living” plot angle yet that was so big in Austen and Wodehouse.

Not that I object to any mention of Jane Austen at any time, but in Downton it’s 1924. That’s closer to our time than Jane Austen’s time.

1924 is, however, early Blandings Castle era. If P.G. Wodehouse were writing Downton Abbey, we’d expect more imposters, more impecunious lovers and more scheming pig-theft. And a roue uncle.

Tom and Lorenzo had it down perfectly! Too funny.

My prior prediction that Anna would be mad that Mr. Bates snooped in her purse was correct…
I did like seeing what a side saddle actually looked like. And the horses were pretty.

My new predictions…
Now that the stress of living with a murderer is gone Anna gets pregnant.

Isis is pregnant just like Mary said she was. They need some puppies around to keep people watching and for youtube videos.

Edith decides Marigold is boring after all but it’s too late to return her. The mad wife shows up claiming the newspaper. Edith challenges her to a column writing contest, winner take all.

Daisy spills tea on Moseley’s book.

Barrow looks quite a bit better by next week and everyone wonders what he’s up to now.

Scotland yard gives up on Greene because nobody cares anymore. They decide to arrest Barrow instead.

I did think it was funny when they finally had a school prize giving on Downton. No trip by Bertie to and Dahlia’s is complete without having to distribute prizes to the local kids or at least MC a village variety show.

The school prize episode made me long for some Wodehouse-style humor on the show.

Ha! I am conditioned to expect some kind of madcap goings on at church fetes and prize givings.

Starting to sound like Brady Bunch! I love the image of Daisy spilling the tea, and then having to go to a bookstore in York to find a replacement and bumping into a young gentleman who is studying farming…

I took the painting thing to be a cow creamer.

=))

I have a cow creamer that was my great aunt’s but it isn’t silver

I just caught up last night.

Mary is such a biatch.

I’m glad Edith finally got the cajones to take Marigold and leave Downton.

Loved the bit were Isobel got to tell Violet that Rose’s suitor is Jewish.

I also think Violet is fearing losing Isobel as a friend when she marries Lord Merton…

Finally caught up and allowed myself to read this thread with no fear of spoilers. I was absolutely convinced Edith was going to kill herself, and then that she was going to throw herself in front of a train…the Marigold “kidnapping” seems mild in comparison (not to mention foolhardy).

And, go Daisy!

I am hoping that Isis is pregnant. I think she must be, because Lord G. said that she “couldn’t be” and how often is he right?

Isis has been trotting around Downton Abbey with His Lordship since at least 1912. It is now 1926. That’s one old bitch. Rather too old to be “with puppy.”

Wasn’t the original dog called Osiris?

Pharaoh.

Ugh!!! I can barely type this because my eyes are watering so much.

And I knew it was coming.

This must be the turning point where they want us to like Robert again.
