Downton Abbey

gouf78 and I must read some of the same sources, because I too have read that children tend to look like their fathers when they are about 18 months old. Years ago, I was baby-sitting a young boy who was about that age, and it looked to me as though someone had stuck his father’s head on his small body–really sort of disconcerting! Of course, Marigold won’t look that much like Michael Gregson, but still . . .

Actually, I thought it was quite tactful of Lord Grantham to say that the child Edith was caring for looked like Gregson. Marigold probably looks quite a lot like Edith did at that age. The camera work certainly tended to emphasize this probable resemblance. By saying that Marigold looked like Gregson, LG made it clear that he had figured it out, without explicitly commenting about Edith.

With regard to the “zingers” between Lady Violet and Isobel, I have the impression that Isobel would be perfectly capable of achieving a tie, but it’s not in her character (mostly) to do that. I like Lady Violet (a lot! Maggie Smith is an incredible actress! And the Violet-Isobel interactions are sometimes hysterically funny!), but personally, I could imagine happily aging into Isobel, and not so for Lady Violet.

@oldmom4896 Thanks for the link to the NYT piece. Apparently I’ve been channeling Louis Bayard, unless he’s reading the DA thread in the Parents Cafe (in which case, he’s ripping me off) since he’s irritated by the same things that have been bugging me.

Downton Abbey must now employ more jailbirds than any other house in Yorkshire. Anna’s arrest was so preposterous that I expected Mary to tell those silly policemen to quit being ridiculous and unhand her maid immediately. Instead, she tries to pull rank and is insulted by the oddly confrontational deputy who seems to think he’s solved the crime of the century by arresting a maid who was assaulted by a serial rapist who was squashed by a bus. Doesn’t seem like much of a career enhancer to me. I hope * LADY* Mary Crawley has him stuffed and mounted for his impertinence. Maybe her next boyfriend can take care of it.

I don’t care that Maggie Smith looks older than Count Chocula, she is perfect in every way and I want her to live for ever. If Julian Fellowes kills off Violet before the series ends, I will hunt him down.

Yes, that’s Matthew Goode. He is Finn Polmar on the Good Wife. Imdb gives his character name on Downton Abbey, but I don’t know if that counts as a spoiler.

Well I suppose Dickie Merton is a step up from Bilbo Baggins (the actress who plays Isobel was previously married to Ian Holm).

And Carson is married to Dolores Umbridge!

Oh my! I never thought of that awful Delores married to anyone! They look happy in that picture.

They do and she is dressed exactly like Delores Umbridge! Our head HR persona at work looks, dresses and acts like Umbridge. It is quite unsettling.

How did they produce such a tall, beautiful daughter˜

I find this thread as entertaining as the show…possibly even more so

Isobel and Bilbo from 1997

That picture of Carson and Delores…I can’t ever unsee that!

Hahahaha…I am not sure I can watch Carson without seeing that picture in my head and thinking of mean ol’Umbridge!

Isobel looks very, very attractive in that shot.

Thanks for posting.

Penelope Wilton and Maggie Smith are both in “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

How can it be that LG has already figured out the truth behind Marigold’s parentage but Mary is still clueless? I thought Mary was smarter than that…

However, in order to figure out Edith’s secret, Mary would actually have to pay attention to the children of Downton, and it seems she barely pays attention to her own child.

OMG @Madison85. You made my day! Carson and Delores Umbridge. I hope she’s nicer IRL and he’s less of a wet blanket!

Mary hasn’t figured out Marigold because it hasn’t crossed her mind that any man would have Edith.

^ good point.

AS for the epi - I couldn’t believe they arrested Anna for Mr. Green’s murder. I see all of next season as a repeat of last season except for Anna walking around the cell block instead of Mr. Bates.

I think the police arrested Anna as a way of putting pressure on Mrs. Hughes to confess. If in fact Mrs. Hughes did it, she will fell so guilty about what she’s subjecting Anna and Mr. Bates to that she will confess.

Hmmm…possible. My initial thought, way back, was that Mrs. Hughes killed Green - but there is a big difference in ages that I find it hard to believe the eye witness could confuse Anna with Mrs. Hughes.

I just want this whole plot line to go away. I can’t believe they have spent the better part of two seasons on this.

Add me as one who loves this thread…I adore that I can come here on a Saturday before a new episode and there are new posts.
