Did I miss an explanation of how Russian Prince and Princess are going to support themselves in Paris?
Yes, beautiful Rose found her man, but other than that, notice who had proposals/propositions this season? The over 50/60/70/80 set (Cora, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Crawley, Violet). As an over 50 myself, I certainly appreciate the older women not being left out of the romantic goings on. (Forgive me if I don’t have the supposed ages right; you get my point.)
I feel like the Mr. Greene plotline wasted many valuable on-air moments where I could have at least been looking at beautiful clothes, if they couldn’t think of another plot line.
Enjoyed last night’s episode, but not that the whole Green thing is still unfinished. As much as it made no sense that the police would arrest Anna because someone identified her as possibly being near the guy in London, it now makes no sense that they won’t re-arrest her after an alibi is provided for Bates. IMO, Fellowes has really let this part of the storyline drag on W-A-Y too long; it detracts from everything else.
Happy that Carson finally got his act together and proposed to Mrs. Hughes.
Not sure if Mary deserves another suitor, the young Aidan Quinn lookalike Mr. Talbott. And he races cars, when Matthew died in a car? She seemed to be fishing pretty heavily for him. Blake needs to come back and make her laugh!
And why pair Edith with someone hapless? He became the agent because what else do you do with a distant cousin who has no prospects and no ambition? She deserves better. Her stunning red halter-like-neck Christmas dress deserves better.
I liked how Cora came alive a bit in this episode. I also liked her blue coat and how it had one button at the hip! How much have they spent on fashions? What happens to the clothes when they’re done with them? Wouldn’t we all love to go to an auction of those clothes.
It was a wonderful episode! January is sooo far away! My youngest wasn’t feeling well last night and went to bed, so I’ll have to rewatch with her today - darn! I’m sure I’ll catch more details this time. I STILL don’t understand the Green thing. Does the witness not know whether Green was talking to a man or a woman??? If anyone understands, please explain. And did Bates write a confession?
But the Hughes/Carson proposal was so satisfying to watch. Felllowes gave us what we wanted there. And I think Mary’s new prospect is finally a formidable opponent for her! Should be fun to watch!
Almost perfect episode. The only thing that could have made it better for me was finding out who Green’s killer was and being done with that storyline. Loved the tender scene between LG and Edith and the one with Tom, Mary, & Edith. Had I been watching in the UK on Christmas Day, I would have felt like I had gotten a delicious present with this one.
loving these comments. i liked all the quick retorts and comebacks last night. got a chuckle when thomas said something to bates about not hurting his arm/hands because then he’d be really wobbly!
Can someone explain who the Agent is (the guy talking to edith) and his connection to the families? and also Mr. Talbot: is he the friend of atticus?
And also, i’m curious how one becomes a Lord . … like attitucus’ dad?
The agent is, I believe, a second or third cousin to the fellow who actually owns the estate that Lord Sinderby rented for the week-long shoot.
I just re-watched the episode and of course got a lot more out of it. I absolutely loved Edith’s hair when LG went into her bedroom. Long and wavy. Just lovely.
Even without a lady’s maid, Mary managed to pull the perfect outfit out of the closet to visit jail, the blood-red number with the fold over neckline and asymmetrical closing.
Edith’s clothes are a lot prettier when she’s happy. The strapless dress with the cording halter was gorgeous.
I want one of those tweed suit they wear for shooting.
Looks like Rose and Tom won’t be back next year. One to New York and the other to Boston. The agent who Edith was dancing with is a drab character. Not nearly as interesting as Gregson. Fellowes might resurrect an old story line and have this third cousin somehow come into that huge estate due to some disaster that takes Lord something or other and his son. Fellowes hasn’t brought the 1920’s craze over airplanes into any stories yet, sort of surprising.
Thomas “befriended” the butler by commiserating with him over Lord Sinderby’s treatment of him in public. Consequently, the butler confided in Thomas all sorts of bad information about Lord Sinderby – including the not-so-minor detail that he had a mistress, the lovely Diana Clark, with whom he had had a child. So apparently Thomas (or maybe, at Thomas’s direction, Baxter) wrote Diana a letter pretending to be from Lord Sinderby telling her to come to the estate and that he would be alone there.
The butler must know who was responsible for inviting Diana. Did the potential embarrassment of Lord Sinderby make the butler happy and grateful to Thomas? Or does he now feel like Thomas will somehow stab him in the back with other secrets he may have told him??
That butler probably feels he’d better watch himself because Thomas has the upper hand now.
I had that same reaction when Mary was oogling the sports car and whatshisname says it was his car “oooh I like sports cars, my late husband was killed in one!”
And – does Lord Sinderby blame the butler for her coming at that inauspicious time? Or does he think Diana Clark just happened to drop by? (She wouldn’t have just dropped by since Lord Sinderby was renting the estate only for a week. She probably wouldn’t have known where he was. So the Lord has to assume that The Butler Did It.)
VeryHappy, the speculation is DA will only go one more season because JF is starting a new series and in the past hasn’t committed to other series because he didn’t want to do two. Ergo–many have felt the writing may be on the wall. Or perhaps he’ll share a bit and let some other (creative plotters please) producer take over DA.
I loved watching this episode because I’m a fan of Edith and she finally got some daddy approval and clearly blossomed into a much better wardrobe. I think it is about time Mary (another of my favorites) gets her comeuppance, so the new guy (who I have thought was adorable in The Good Wife and Imitation Game) might provide someone who doesn’t bow down to Lady Mary. I must admit (not having rewatched the past seasons) I didn’t cringe at the racing car business. But now… ew. But still, maybe she’ll insist he give up his cars to appease her unease, and he’ll say nope. hehe.
I think Maggie Smith was at her finest this ep. I love her quips and one-liners–they are the best thing in most episodes. But with the Prince K storyline, she’s had more dramatic meat, so to speak. And she’s been flawless–especially as the told the full story of the Princess grabbing her by her hair and arm and whatever she could grab and pulling her out of the coach!! Oh my.
Loved how Thomas’s scheming ways are a weapon even the upstairs side of the Crawleys are willing to dispatch when they see fit. And I always get a kick when they demote butlers/valets to footmen. As if they have no pride at all. Yeesh!
Lastly (I could go on and on), I thought Lord S was difficult before, but cut him a bit of slack. But now? Horrible. And to think, Rose (and the rest of the family) is making a bargain with this man to keep his secret. I guess a good piece of blackmail is worth something in their set, but really? To use their upper hand to insist Susan be included in family dinners? I mean. Susan??? Oh, yes, do invite Shrimpie. But… haha.
