I must be the only one here who hated last night’s episode.
Barrows confirmed he has no redeeming qualities. No surprises there. Interesting that Mary was the only one trying to give Barrows the benefit of the doubt as to his actions as a loyal employee (although retracted).
Stupid police guy keeps showing up and Baxter was right the first time–she needs to stay out of it so she doesn’t land in jail for stealing. Just dumb. Moseley needs to stay out of it. And I just want the jail bird stuff to disappear–I don’t care. I didn’t care with the Bates and I don’t care with Baxter.
The Drewes got evicted from a decent place with all their kids after being wonderful tenants and working for years raising the Grantham’s prestige by working the farm because Edith is a prig and a kitchen maid makes a fuss.
Mary will be more than merely “annoyed” as Tom put it when she figures out the details. At least I hope so.
Mr Mason would be just fine if Daisy hadn’t opened her mouth to begin with. What’s the old guy going to do with a place that big anyways? Am I the only one who doesn’t see this as a good thing?
The hospital brouhaha–Violet has ALWAYS made the issue of local control her argument. She says it EVERY time. Nobody seems to get it and I don’t understand why.
Why don’t you want new technology, Violet?
Violet: “What will happen to local control?” Note: she never says–“I hate progress.”
Technology will become available and is good (Violet isn’t stupid nor living in the dark ages)–control over your own circumstances will vanish never to return. Everyone is ignoring the village’s autonomy without looking for possible solutions. And it doesn’t have anything to do with mansions disappearing and old families.
It is a valid point of discussion–but they haven’t discussed it yet. The pros and cons of technology–more pros of course. The pros and cons of local vs outside control and how things will work–never has been discussed as far as I know. But I certainly don’t care to hear about it anymore. It’s only an hour show.
Robert has an ulcer I’m pretty sure. Local doc will take care of him creating the first walk-in clinic.
Maybe the person who needs more technology is the race car driver guy. Or Tom who plays pit man during a race and gets run over. Mary will make the decisions. She seems to be the only one around who just MAKES things happen (like with Anna) and carry on in the face of adversity without tearing up and falling apart.
re Robert: I don’t remember the exact context, but wasn’t there a comment last night about the possibility of Violet attending Robert’s funeral? Could that have been foreshadowing?
I’m not going to Google because I’d find out things I don’t want to know, but I thought Baxter had been in jail for stealing. Wasn’t that why the police guy knew about her in the first place: because she was convicted for stealing, but the guy got off unpunished? Molesley should have kept his mouth shut instead of telling her she should testify, because in the real world she would be pilloried for admitting that she was duped by the guy and she stole the jewelry. However, this is Downton and when she testifies, everyone upstairs and down will rally around her.
The Drewes didn’t get evicted. Mr. Drewes realized that Mrs. Drewes couldn’t stay there. They left voluntarily. There was no way the Marigold scheme could have ended up well; Edith and Mr. Drewes are both at fault for making the agreement in the first place without telling Mrs. Drewes the truth. Poor Mrs. Drewes, the innocent victim.
Yes, Baxter was in prison. So, she isn’t going to prison again for the same crime.
Writing my own script…
Edith makes that excellent secretary co-editor of the newspaper. She meets Tom and becomes his new love interest.
Nice agent proposes to Edith. She says no because of Marigold…though she doesn’t tell him that. He won’t give up and eventually she tells him the truth. He doesn’t care. The DC is appalled because he’s only an agent…but she knows Marigold is illegitimate and so decides he’s the best Edith can do. Lots of at least he isn’t the chauffeur lines…
Agent/husband gets into argument with Mary because he thinks she’s doing things wrong.
Daisy quits DA and goes to live with Mr. Mason. This makes Jimmy realize he’s in love with Daisy.
i caught that comment to about “as long as she doesn’t attend your funeral” or something like that. Is it to throw us off? We will see. I’m tired of all the police stuff too…yawn.
I really loved the tension, then conversation about Sybill at the lunch table. My favorite part of the episode. As a matter of fact, I think Sybil’s death was the best scene so far in the entire series…it has stayed with me.
I was tired of the Anna-Bates police stuff, but I’ll be glad to see Baxter’s evil seducer get his just reward.
I can’t remember, and again, I don’t want to Google because I don’t want to find out things I don’t want to know, but how sympathetic was Mary to Sybil in her life? She loves Sybil now, but I can’t remember whether she approved of Sybil’s radical antics and her relationship with the chauffeur when Sybil was alive.
I figure they could not bring Gwen back until Tom was back, because the story she told about Sybil was so touching, made more so because Tom was sitting there. Awesome scene. I was crying like a baby.
What did people think about Henry Talbot’s body language at the restaurant with Mary - slumped down and hiding his face, sort of, behind the menu? He should have been leaning toward her, you know, to show more interest. Seemed out of character, IMO.
I also loved the scene about Sybil and shed more than just a few tears. I watched the second episode of Mercy Street, which aired right after DA. When it was over, I realized DA makes me laugh and cry all in one episode. I guess I’m easily pleased, because it rarely disappoints me. Mercy Street, on the other hand, doesn’t offer anything but doom and gloom. I understand that the Civil War was no picnic, but there isn’t really anyone among the characters for me to rally around so far. Not very satisfying, but there are only 4 episodes left until Grantchester comes back with that handsome Anglican priest:)
It was great to see Gwen again. She handled the whole scene beautifully after Thomas’ catty comment. It was sweet to hear the story about Sybil and to see how Tom and Sybil help to harmonize elements of the family that are usually at odds.
I don’t see Tom going for either Mary or Edith. Too weird and incestuous. Maybe they’ll leave his future open but I bet they will resolve the love interest future for both Mary and Edith. The race car guy and the helpful editor seem likely at this point but I’m hoping for that scientist commoner to come back for Mary (can’t remember his name).
BerneseMtn–I thought the body language made sense. He was toying with her, she knew it. She needed to come to him if anything is to happen. It will always be Mary’s move. Surprised if they didn’t hook up before going home after dinner.
Okay, I feel better about the Drewes if that was THEIR decision to move (still not sure about that). But still blame Edith. What a mess.
I thought the Sybil scene was weird. Barrows makes a scene with Mrs. Hardy and then the elite who haven’t been downstairs on anything except individual emergency basis (of their own making usually and the help need a super reason to be upstairs) rush to the kitchen and act all friendly? Because of someone they didn’t even recognize as having worked for them for two years? Huh?
The only real moment was when Isobel asked Violet if she had her passport when Violet said she hadn’t been downstairs in 20 years. (Love that line!)
Not sure if Richard was mad at Barrows for being “less than generous to his guests” or more for dragging him into a scene where he didn’t need to be.
Amazon should be shipping my Season 6 tomorrow. Hip, hip hooray! DH wants to wait as PBS portions things out - but after 6 years, I’m heading right through to the end, fast as I can!!!
Somehow I really want to believe that something great happens to Edith before the end. She deserves it. She has played second or rather third fiddle for so long. Mary will always land on her feet. I don’t think that Tom ends up with either of them. Glad to see Mrs. Hughes keeps her name while at the house.
