It seems I remember the couple of conversations about cutting back and it being said about questioning the future need for “a butler and an under butler”? I’d have to go back to episode 1 of this season and listen.
@gouf78, you are hilarious! If you’re not a comedy writer, you missed your calling.
@VeryHappy – I’m glad I’m not the only one who completely missed Cora & Violet’s chat that mentioned Marigold! Where the heck was I???
@VaBluebird – thanks for the info about why Barrow’s job may be in jeopardy. Somehow I must have missed that little snippet, too.
@CBBBlinker: I didn’t miss it completely. I certainly saw the camera zoom in on Mary’s face. But I didn’t hear the conversation clearly at all. All I heard was "bzbzbzbzbz . . . . secrets . . . . Marigold. . bzbzbzbz . . . " and then saw the look on Mary’s face. Very frustrating when you can’t just re-run the last minute or so! (Or maybe I can and just don’t know how.)
Have never watched the show but keep hearing about it. Is there someplace I can catch up from the very beginning?
Want to know what all the buzz is about. Feel like I’m missing out on something.
“I’m not a person who likes to see blood on camera but kudos to DA for the drama…I thought it would be a bloodless heart attack”
Guess the special effects guys had to get their two cents in. It was okay. I guess. Not really for me.
Drama should come from the story and suspense and we knew WEEKS ago with Robert it was a matter of when not what. We even knew the what. Heck, we knew upfront that it didn’t look good for even dinner since he felt sick. There went the suspense about the when. .
It was dramatically gross visually–just not dramatic in the story sense.
Kind of a guy thing–ooohhh, blood, lots of blood and gore and then it spews every where (guys cheering their approval!) and…and…and…Cora puts on her gloves and goes to the hospital and the head hospital guy tells some really lame story that nobody cares about…did anybody care?
And how many actual audience members saw it? I think of DA as a female predominant audience (the males got dragged into watching with significant others for the most part). . Most probably closed their eyes and said “gross, tell me when it’s over”. Just sayin’.
Re #4335 … You’re absolutely right. Mary is too self-absorbed.
@raclut, You could try your local library. Our library has it. That’s how we’re currently watching all the past seasons of Game of Thrones, since we don’t have the station it is on.
LOL–for DRAMA–it would have been Robert at the table saying “I’ve changed my will. It affects all of you.
Mary, Edith, Tom. .Mary…” AGGHH!!!
@gouf78 Anna isn’t slipping at all. She’s a kind person who doesn’t want harm to come to anyone. She is loyal to Mary, but like everyone in the household except Carson, she’s not blind to Mary’s faults. She has no problems with Edith and no reason to betray her.
Ha. But he can’t change his will, that’s what the whole entail thing in Season 1 was all about. His father tied up the whole estate to go to a male heir.
I liked the injection of some realism into the burst ulcer/blood all over the table thing. Very dramatic. Made me gasp.
Again, hate TV/movie blood, but I think this is why I liked it. There was a whole table full of people, all dressed up, having to sit there politely, listening to other people argue. Haven’t we all been there, perhaps stuck listening to another couple argue, or grown siblings argue at Thanksgiving, embarrassed and wanting it to stop, wanting the ground to swallow us up? Well, that was one way to put an end to a socially excruciating dinner!
bestfriend–I don’t see Anna telling any already wide-spread gossip as betrayal to anyone even if it has to do with Edith… Mary didn’t ask Anna for secrets–She asked for what the “buzz” was among the servants–like a very local opinion page in the newspaper. She asked to be “in the loop”.
It is not a secret entrusted to Anna at all.
Who knows? Mary may be the one to figure out a good story for Edith so life runs more smoothly for her.
Tatin–oohh. Forgot about that entail thing. That was good wasn’t it? But Mary is still in charge for umpteen years before George (is that his name? Need to ask the nanny…) comes of age.
So VIOLET says,…“I’ve changed my will…”…
@raclut You can watch all six seasons online on Amazon. If I recall correctly, the first 5 seasons were free with Amazon Prime. I did have to purchase this final season.
If Lord Grantham died, Georgie would be the new Earl. Cora would be the Dowager Countess. What would Violet be?
Thank you @ciervo.
Mary would be in charge of Georgie–so life would go on as she has already ordained. Cocktails at 5pm.
Cora would mope no matter what her title. More so than usual. Still sorting through a random desk looking for papers which she knows nothing about (a lesson to everyone).
Violet would be… ex-Dowager Countess. And still sparring happily with Isobel. But very sad her son is gone (now a new thing in common with Isobel).
Would Cora and Violet share the dower house? (lol)
The bloody bits during Episode 5 were very, very brief. I re-watched it today and I was surprised at how brief it was. Of course that’s practically all I remembered from watching it the first time.
And Anna isn’t going to say anything because nothing has been confirmed among the servants. Anna had a hunch when she saw Mr. Drewes on the train with Marigold, but when she went to discuss it with Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Hughes told her to mind her own business. And that’s all that was ever discussed downstairs, as far as I remember.
I rewatched this morning. I skipped over the dinner scene. I was looking for clues to explain how Cora and Violet arguing about the hospital led to the arguing about the Marigold secret. I think it is just another case where Cora feels Violet overstepped her role. Maybe they will be overjoyed that Robert recovers?
