@rbc2018 100% agree with you and agree that the wording was poor. They were like questions you might ask a middle, schooler. That’s why,I would love to see an example of one that VT considered excellent
According to admissions in my last tour they Are all read and grades. They said they made them purposefully short and that that being short and concise they know is difficult and why they do it.
@cbl1 As I said, in my opinion they are so short as to not be meaningful. For instance, they say that the ability to set long term goals is a quality they look for in applicants. Then they ask for a few sentences about a goal that was set and worked toward. There is no way to get any depth about an applicant’s thought process, challenges, etc. So I wonder how they grade that…if they think the goal is worthy enough? That doesn’t mesh with what they say they are measuring. Anyway, I get that shorter is easier to grade, I just don’t think they’re meaningful. Add that to the poor grammar of a couple of the prompts, and I think it is a part of the application that needs to be be improved in the future. It is a work in progress. Things are changed each year to hopefully improve the process. We shall see!
@TarekHA Hi, I also applied as transfer. How are you getting a decision so early?
Hi, I applied EA as an international student for general engineering, could anyone chance my admission
My Stats:
SAT:1280, math: 760, English:520
ACT:27
Rigorous IB course with maths, physics and chemistry HL and a predicted of 29/42
Good EC’s with internship
Strong essays
@yomo123 does your school track GPA? If not, I think 29/42 class rank looks kinda low.
Hoping to get some news this week Maybe VT will be nice and put out decisions this Friday. Anyone think this could happen?
On their instagram page someone commented when will decisions come out and they responded the 22th, hopefully they will send it out earlier
My son applied for Business. His SAT score was low (1120) but his GPA is 4.47 (had 7 honors and 5 AP courses in high school. Solid community service, National Honor Society, Varsity Sports captain). I have another son who is a junior Aerospace Engineering major at VT. Can anyone chance him?
@hope2have2Hokies It’s my belief that VT views honors courses through a different lense than AP/IB/DE. They have their own scoring/conversion method and I just don’t see them weighing honors to the same extent as AP - many HS’s (like my son’s) give a 1 pt. GPA bump for honors/AP/IB. There’s no match in rigor or curriculum. VT may provide extra weight for honors if a school does not offer AP or IB.
Does his school have Naviance? That’s your first “tell” on chances. The EC’s are pretty standard for applicants to the top VA schools - any unique EC, or story to tell via essays? Your hook is legacy for sure.
According to Naviance, he does have a good chance but I haven’t seen anyone here post SAT scores as low as his 1120 so I’m a nervous wreck. We are OOS (New Jersey)
@hope2have2Hokies Not sure what tools your school has active in Naviance, but when our son was in HS I think we were able to do separate scattergrams for SAT and GPA (or maybe there were plot lines for each and then an overall plot location… 2 years has gone by really fast). That scattergram is probably as close to a chance-me result as you’ll get - if he’s plotted dead center in a sea of green “X” then he could be a 50% or better. If he’s an outlier off to the right on the grid, then much better chance. If he’s left edge of the green group it might be a good idea to start hyping 2nd and 3rd choice schools. Did he also apply to JMU?
With the transition to the coalition app, etc., VT announced their more holistic review would include more emphasis on legacy than there had been in recent year’s prior.
His school does use the scattergram tool and he still looks good. He did not apply to JMU. He was accepted to Penn State and wait-listed for Clemson. VT is his top choice.
Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.
@hope2have2Hokies if you had said Engineering I would have said maybe no. Business is not typically as challenging. what were his math SAT scores ?With his GPA being strong I would say 50/50. My son has a lower GPA and higher SAT with 6 AP and similar stats EC’s to your son and I still think his chances are maybe 60%. I think VT has gotten much more popular. Luckily my son has gotten in to several other schools and VT is not his #1 but still would be in the running. Good luck and post what your results are
His math score was 580 (not great but not terrible). He really is quite good in math (does well in all his honors and AP courses), and I’m not being biased, I’m a math teacher. He is not a good standardized test taker.
They will never tell you anything but the official date if asked. Fingers crossed we get something this week. The first indication they normally give is on their twitter account (last year that morning of decisions they posted the hokie bird showing he was looking forward to seeing new hokies).
I was not able to find a twitter account for VT admissions?
Twitter is @FollowMeToVT
Facebook and Instagram are @VTAdmissions
@cbl1 our school does not track GPA those were just my predicted grades. Is my chance low due to my predicted score
I just rewatched a FB Live from December and they said “Feb 22 but it could be a few days earlier”. Feb 22 is a Saturday so I suspect it will be sometime next week
