False Ads on CC

So I keep getting an ad that says Vanna White is leaving Wheel of Fortune here on CC.

Well guess what…it’s not true.

The least the folks here could do is make sure their ads are accurate.

Right?

@CCadmin_Sorin ??

Did anyone report the new poster sending the PM’s? Wasn’t sure what to do with that so mentioning it here to see if it was addressed.

It is not just CC. There are plenty of such clickbait ads on other sites that say things like Rachel Ray has died. Etc.

If you mean SamGuy, then yes, numerous users reported it and @MaineLonghorn took care of it.

I haven’t seen the ads in question here, but I’ve been getting something worse: a Snickers ad that autoplays music.

I don’t want sound to come out of my computer unless I ask for sound. I can’t stand it when I click on a thread and start hearing noise, even though I kind of like the music snippet.

Use adblock. It’s simple, and it’s free unless you feel grateful enough to send them a donation.

It is also simple to pause if you want to read pages that block you if you are using an adblocker.

You can also prevent autoplay, at least in some browsers.

Do other people get the popups that say you can win an iphone or imac? I don’t trust them but there is no way to close them so i have to back out of CC and restart my phone to get rid of them. (They only pop up in CC and only on my phone, not computer.)

You have not won a $1000 Amazon or Walmart gift card yet? :wink:

Yes, when I get this ads, I take a screenshot and send them in to admin@collegconfidential.com with details about when it showed up, what I was using (eg iPhone 6s, not any app, etc). It has gotten better recently, knock wood!

Usually, individual sites do not sell advertising to individual advertisers. Advertisers purchase online ad space as a package, based on demographics of who reads the various sites. Individual sites do not know who the advertisers are when they sell to packagers. However, this is changing a little bit, but usually the other way around – advertisers who don’t want to be associated with certain websites will ask that their ads not be places there (for example, on racist or sexist sites).

Yes, I have experienced these infuriating pop-up ads on another site that I frequent. It was really bad for a while in that they ALWAYS intruded on my browsing within one minute of logging onto the site. Mostly they consisting of “congratulating me” about “my Ipad” having been chosen to win a 1000 dollar Amazon gift card. 8-| I wondered how “my IPad” was suppose to claim such a prize. :-? I only experienced this once on CC. I was so shocked. Of course I never took the bait on any of these ads. The only way to make it go away was to leave the site entirely by closing the browser window, but as soon as I would go back… :(( I reported the ads to the admins of the other site. I’m sure other users pointed it out as well. Fortunately, it’s been three weeks ■■■■■ ad-free so far. Knock wood indeed!

LOL, I just realized I used the forbidden “T” word in my last post, and it was asterisked out. :))

@Himom and others…

There is a WHOLE thread in Community Forum and Issues about the Amazon and other pop ups.

I’m not talking about those pop ups…that take over your device. I’m talking about ads that are appearing on the forums. It’s annoying enough but at least they could be truthful!

Why don’t you guys use Adblock?

Tell us how to use it, @Nrdsb4

I see the ads in the feed only on my phone. I’ll have to look into how to block that. I use adblock on my desktop and have no problems. Even though it’s supposedly on my phone, it doesn’t work as well on apps.

@brantly, it depends on your browser. Google adblock plus and you can find it for your browser. The free version works just fine. You can pause it if you want to go to a site that requires you to disable it.

Thanks!
