Well, I do miss the Downton Abbey thread, but now the new season of Game of Thrones is almost here. Anyone else a fan of the books and/or the series? The description of Sunday’s episode says, “The fate of Jon Snow is revealed.” Any predictions?
My prediction is that he will come back to life, with the help of Ghost and Melissandre, and will therefore be free of his vows to the Night’s Watch since his “death” freed him. Plus, they killed him!
He will eventually wreak havoc on Ramsey Snow. Unfortunately, he’ll be saddled (literally) with Melissandre for a while. She will predict great things for him and give him significant looks and he will look all woebegone and doubting.
@greenwitch I agree with your first paragraph at least. It being Game of Thrones, I’m not convinced that Melissandre will survive for a long time. From the trailers, it looks like Davos will also be involved somehow.
I think Bran (happy to have him back!) will see things from the past that explain who Jon Snow’s parents were. I agree with theories that involve the Tower of Joy, but don’t want to say more to avoid spoilers for those who haven’t read the books and fan theories.
Maybe we’ll even meet Howland Reed!
I FOUND MY PEOPLE
I haven’t read the books, but I’m a huge fan of the series and can’t wait for the new season! I do think Jon Snow will somehow come back to life, but I’m not sure how that’s going to look yet.
I’m pretty sure we’re going to see events from Eddard Stark’s and Robert Baratheon’s youth in flashbacks, and I’ve felt for years that this is an important element of the story in the books that has been conspicuously absent from the show. I’m looking forward to seeing how the show handles that part of the story.
I’m not making any predictions about what’s to come. I’m not good at Game of Thrones predictions. I used to think that the series would end with Shireen Baratheon on the Iron Throne. Oops.
I never read the books, and originally I didn’t like the series (the violence! the sex! the sex AND the violence!)
The I got sucked in and now I’m hooked. What I love is that no one is safe…not Eddard Stark, not Robb Stark, not Joffrey Baratheon, etc. I have a feeling that even if Jon Snow comes back, he won’t be the same. For some reason, I keep thinking of Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary” book, and how, when the dead come back, there are unintended consequences.
Edited to add: I love it – as long as Tyrion remains alive. His death is the only one I’d really, truly regret.
I’m still mourning for Robb Stark. Similar character to Jon Snow in many ways, but I liked Robb better.
I’m also a Tyrion fan; I predict he will say witty things. I like him that he’s a bit more sober in the books, but I think Peter Dinklage is perfect for the part and prefer him over someone made up to have all the disfigurations described in the book.
I was never a big Robb Stark fan, but there are several Freys I’d like to see revenge taken upon.
Maybe Frey pie will be served…
Looking forward to the new season. I hope we have not seen the last of He Who Knows Nothing (and perhaps knows more now).
@Ynotgo I haven’t seen any of the shows yet-I read the books (not all of them). We have season 1 on DVD from netflix sitting on the kitchen counter, I’m trying to get my husband to watch it with me.
My husband didn’t like the shows–too much violence for him. Not sure why, he watches reality shows about catching crabs in Alaska or whatever where bad things happen to real people. I prefer to watch bad things happen to fake people.
But, he said he’d try GoT again this season. I’m actually kind of dreading that, because he has trouble keeping track of lots of characters (like in LOST), and Game of Thrones is pretty extreme for number of characters.
I have read all the books and, for me, it will be difficult watching w/o having a book to have read before hand. First, because there so many characters and stories, it gets confusing. I also would rather be prepared for shocks having read them before seeing them.
It will also be difficult reading the next book if it does not adhere to the script. Isn’t he kind of boxing himself in?
My thought is that he will not come out with another book and will let HBO complete the story, with his input of course. He is now a rich man and apparently not in the best of health. Once the preassure is off, he can write books of side stories. IOW, whatever happened to…
It’s a shame, but I think you’re right. Robert Jordan died without finishing the Wheel of Time series, it just got so unwieldy it got away from him. I think in Martin’s case, he just writes very slowly and hates to follow an outline or respect a deadline.
I’m wearing a T-shirt today with a Stark direwolf that says, “You pwn nothing, Jon Snow.” DS17 got it for me at a hacking competition that had a trade show. (“Pwn” is hacker slang.)
I also have shirt that says, “Stick 'em with the pointy end.” But I’m waiting for Arya to be awesome again to wear that.
Spoiler–
I guess it looks like Jon is dead. How could they bring him back now? And the “glamour” at the end tonight was a surprise.
So many of the likable characters are being killed off or are in trouble. Glad Sansa was not captured and is with Brienne. But where do they go?? I guess to the wall to find out Jon is dead or to look for Bran to find out he is a tree?
I don’t think it’s over for Jon yet.
