High School Class of 2021

Ayy nice job! I’ve got a spell bowl competition tonight so we’ll see how that goes ?

I’m finally bowling as a varsity reserve instead of strict JV so that’s pretty cool. My coach told me he wants to put me in more which is hecka dope.

Ended up placing 4th in my class at Spell Bowl, which was okay, I guess. Didn’t go on to state which was a bummer but I got hecka cookies so that was cool!

I had a city/region-wide business competition today and my group won! I was awarded a $15k/yr scholarship for a local U. We had to make a business plan for a coffee shop on a college campus- we made a buffet style restaurant and I did the marketing + menu creation and all that. It was lots of fun. It just made me so much more excited for DECA. A professor at the university we competed at (he was one of the judges) came up to me and personally told me I did a fantastic job on my marketing materials and presentation, which was really cool.

Great Job
Today I won a gavel for the first time in mun. The committee was a crazy combination of general assembly and crisis. It was only my 3rd conference.

@birdbear Ayy good one! I don’t know anyting about MUN but congrats!

Hey guys! I’m getting ready to apply to some summer research programs. Is anyone else applying to summer programs this year?

I have joined academic team this year and have finally started volunteering at the hospital which I absolutely love! I’ve even found a doctor who will let me shadow her when I turn 16.

This quarter went pretty well, I got all A’s.

Congratulations everyone! Seems like a lot of you are doing great things.

My grades are a big oof. I have As in H. World History, Health, and H. English 10, A-s in Spanish 3, H. Chemistry, and AP Psych, and a B- in DC Pre-Calculus

Also @stanford200381 I’ve been thinking about it. Which ones are you looking at?

I’m looking into the yale summer and astrophysics.

oops yale summer program in astrophysics

@stanford200381 RIght now I have straight A’s in everything except AP History where I have an A- but my grades from last year weren’t the best since I was dealing with some out of school fam stuff. I’m currently looking into 4 summer programs: Iowa Young Writer’s Studio, CSSSA, KWH summer program, and JH CTY. My school’s culture pretty much entails spending a bunch of money to travel abroad the summer before eleventh so I’m feeling pretty left out right now as everyone applies but hopefully it’ll all pay off when I learn from what I’m doing and don’t sped ten thousand dollars doing it.

Hey everyone, I just joined this website and just found this forum. Wanted some opinion if I should take an additional two classes online

Classes in school RN (AICE is similar to AP and IB)
AICE International History
AICE General Paper
AICE Thinking Skills
AP Psych
AP Calc AB
AP Chem
AP Comp Science Principles

So far I have barely any homework and As this quarter with only a B+ last quarter. So I’m pretty sure I will get all As this semester should I add

Potential Online Classes on FLVS
AP Art History
AP Stats

Thanks in advance!

@KennyStudies Dang! That’s a lot of APs. I wouldn’t personally add more but hey man if you can handle it then do it

Hey guys! I was just looking through this thread and decided to make an account!! You guys are all so smart and accomplished… I feel inadequate lol

Here’s my stats so far:
GPA: 4.3 W/ 3.95 UW
ACT: 36

I go to a private school in CA (am I allowed to say that…LOL) and we’re not allowed to take any AP’s other than in language and computer science until junior year… so my GPA isn’t very good LOL. Plus I got a B+ in English last year… oof

I’m lacking in the extracurricular department though… Anyone know of some prestigious computer science competitions?
-Fluent in Java, Python
-Learning HTML and Swift
-Science Bowl
-Copy Editor of School Magazine
-Editor of STEM magazine
-Math Club
-Robotics
-Cybersecurity Club
-Girls Who Code
-Wave mentorship program
-Computer Science Research at UCLA
-Art (won some Scholastic awards)
-Piano (MSSL, MTAC Panel, other minor competititions)
-Started after-school program at elementary school to teach girls basic Scratch
-Taught English in rural province in China, planning to go back next summer to teach robotics and Scratch/basic Java
-Taught seniors at retirement homes about technology/basic Microsoft and iOS skills
-Volunteer at local hospital

Summer: chemical engineering research at USC (basically coded a linear regression algorithm that can identify attributes of a chemical molecules based on its Fingerprint representation)

I think a major problem for me right now is lack of major awards… Any tips? So excited to get to know you all!!

@stanford2025 you’re definitely accomplished with a 36 on the ACT and those extracurriculars. I don’t know of any computer science competitions, sorry.

@stanford2025 woah, a 36 on the ACT in sophomore year? And I thought a 1510 on the PSAT was pretty good for a tenth grader. Also, scholastic awards are pretty prestigious depending on whether you won regionally or nationally. For competitions, there’s one called the Imagine Cup by microsoft where you code an invention and compete internationally to win grants and mentorship. If you want a long resource click this link ( https://cty.jhu.edu/resources/academic-opportunities/competitions/math.html ) and scroll down to the computer science section.

@wistfulwords A 1510 is also super good! Did you take it this fall? About my ACT score, I basically just spent my entire summer doing practice ACT’s and prep books… wish I could say I was just naturally that smart lol. But thanks so much for all of the info

…and I thought my 1420 was good…

tbf I didn’t really study as much as I should’ve but a 36 is amazing

@stanford2025 Wow a 36! Congratulations! That’s amazing

Sure is an awesome score! Wow!

Hi guys  Haha someone started this thread as an 8th grader!! There are other folks like me out there! :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyone else go to a school where people take 5-6 APs at a time? Will that be you? I feel like 3 for next year isn’t enough sometimes but I don’t qualify for AP math or foreign language rn so that’s the best I’m gonna do probably. (Edit: not qualified means I chose not to take the math pathway accelerating to calcjunior year because I wanted to take AP World instead, and I had a schedule conflict with foreign language so I couldn’t start in middle school…)

@isla701 right now I’m only taking one but next year I’m taking five (APUSH, art history, music theory, bio. and lang) so I’m mentally preparing myself for it. I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to be able to do those AND my ecs since I’m already running into so many conflicts this year and I have barely any time to peruse the internet and waste time doing stuff like this. ahhh… I already feel the work piling on from the minutes slipping away right now.
