Homepage redesign & forum restructuring: Community input needed

Some people think colleges and universities are different, and at some places they are. For example, I graduated fro Ohio University…in the College of Communications.

How about College/University Directory

Personally, I think it is fine.

It’s not. In American English, colleges and universities mean different things.

Would you consider changing “Compare College Offers” (which sounds like it is based on $$) to “Compare College Options”? In the description of Compare College Options, can you define that it is where people would post their options after they have acceptances in hand (or something like that).

Along those same lines, would you consider changing “College Search & Selection” to “College Search”? In the description, include something to describe that it is the section where you would evaluate the colleges you are applying to and develop a balanced mix of colleges. I’m sure @AustenNut can word it better.

Basically, College Search is before you apply and Compare College Options is after you have acceptances in hand.

ETA: I think we should develop a template for Compare College Options.

I do not like “parents’ social lounge” at all. I won’t go on it, personally. Students often post questions on the parent cafe. I don’t think they will go on a parents’ social lounge, which sounds more exclusive. I mostly go on for students but then get into things like insomnia or retirement but without the students, I won’t participate there.

When I log on on my computer, I get the Welcome to the Community with 4 categories and it took me a moment to figure out I had to scroll down to see what I have always seen upon logging in: all the different forums and threads. Is this an issue for newbies? Those 4 categories are pretty limited compared to what is actually available.

Those of us who have been around for a long time (embarrassing!) have been through a lot of changes and I always tend to feel why fix it when it is working.

I don’t see Parent Social Lounge any longer. I think this has reverted to Parent Cafe.

How bout…”Compare College Acceptances”

@compmom, as @thumper1 mentioned, that has been reverted back to Parent Cafe.

I think that works better.

What if we do College Search & Lists?

I like the idea of getting list in there, because that’s why students/parents are doing research…to build a list!

@lkg4answers, there is a template that automatically populates when creating a new post in that category. You can test it out yourself.

Thanks for changing the name of Compare College Offers. Either mods are moving around a bunch of threads or the new name is helping users find the correct forum to post in. :+1:

Happy to see there is a template. I wonder why the majority don’t use it. Hmmm.

Or maybe “college research and list building” (or “ resarching colleges and building a list. or something like that?)

Maybe: College Search: Building a Balanced List

To my understanding that’s because these posts are not originally created in this forum, but are moved here by the @moderators. I hope that now with the renaming and the featuring of this category in one of the 4 boxes on the homepage users will start posting in this category (and thus use the template that auto-populates).

5 posts were split to a new thread: Cookie settings covers the post option

I noticed a set of errors today. The “top med” and “top law” colleges have a reversed greater-than sign. I mean, it says >20% and I think it must mean <20%

If they’re the threads I’m thinking of, it was for colleges whose acceptance rates are greater than 20% that are good for med school/law school, in which case, it would not be a mistake.

Ok then maybe make that clearer? It’s “top chance to get in somewhere after going here” but actually even that is misleading.
