Homepage redesign & forum restructuring: Community input needed

Yes, I see “State Forums” too.

Thanks for confirming! It seems like there is something to do with access. @CC_Jon, can you help give people access to view the theme on staging?

In the meantime, here are some screenshots to illustrate the changes:

Please note that the first forums, Admin, Moderators, and Forum Champions, are only visible to admins, moderators and FC.

I vote to keep Parent Forum and Parent Café as they are. I think they work well. While The Social Lounge might sound more inclusive, I don’t think a change is necessary. Parents make up the largest group of CC users, and non-parents are always welcome to read and participate. The current names simply create a space for parents to connect with one another.

If inclusivity is a concern, perhaps rename Parent Café to Social Lounge while keeping Parent Forum as a dedicated space for parents to discuss college-related topics. Meanwhile, students already have High School Life and College Life forums specifically for them.

In looking at your screenshots of the changes, I don’t feel as though the top of the page is letting me know about the extent of the forums and their breadth. Unless someone’s on Reddit or similar, they may have no clue what a Chance Me/Match Me! is. And it basically just looks like stuff for college and for parents to hang out.

I’m not attached to the structure I suggested above, but I’m just running with it as an example. If there are four images at the top of the homepage, I think that having Getting to College, Applying to College, College and Beyond, and Find Your People might give a better sense of what is available through CC, and then if visitors clicked on the pictures, it can then take them to a list of the categories/subforums associated with that picture (so the picture wouldn’t be a category in and of itself, but would help lead people to those categories).

And again, apologies for my mouse handwriting. My pen/paper handwriting is much better, I promise!

What is the difference between Getting to College and Applying to College?

@AustenNut, unfortunately this is not technically possible because, as mentioned, we can only have a 2-tier structure. If we create another category to host let’s say College Search & Selection, we cannot have another layer under College Search & Selection, so what shall we do with all those other categories?

In my earlier reimaginings, this is what it looked like. But basically, stuff going on before one’s a senior in high school or that is anytime through 12th grade but not in relation to something for college.

I thought my latest proposal would not be another category, just a link to a page. The picture for “Getting to College” would take you to a page with

The other pictures would go to other pages with their particular categories (and subcategories). But if this isn’t possible in the system, then it’s not possible.

Sorry to be so technical, but due to how this is set up in the backend, those boxes at the top are also categories. Unfortunately we are very limited with our options and we can only include categories in there. :frowning:

Where is the Parent Lounge or whatever you plan to call it.

It’s in one of the 4 boxes at the top. Will be called Parents Social Lounge.

Thank you. I like that title.

Shouldn’t there be an apostrophe in Parents Social Lounge?

I thought it was plural…not possessive.

You know…lots of Parents!

Wouldn’t that be Parents’ Social Lounge?

Only if you are making it possessive. If it’s just to indicate more than one…it would just be Parents.

@CC_Sorin what was your intended meaning here.

Parents’ Social Lounge (denoting possessive)

OR

Parents Social Lounge (denoting plural for parent)

A thread was just posted in the Parents Forum asking for advice on what HS courses their kid should take.

If we are moving that type of conversation out of the Parents Forum, where does a post like that belong? In High School Life? If so, can we find a better name than Pre-College “Issues”? And can Home Schooling just be Home Schooling without the “and college”?

I would say that’s the perfect fit.

I think that makes sense, unless someone feels strongly about it. I have no idea why College was added in the title.

I followed the same logic as for the current “Parents Forum” and “Parents Cafe.” I am fine to add an apostrophe if that makes it better.

I think it’s fine the way you have it. I always thought it was a plural notation, not possessive

Maybe because the intent was to discuss how home schooling and college applications intersect. NOT to discuss ways to homeschool a student.
