How often do you unsubscribe from a thread?

^^^And that’s what I DO do. But very occasionally I would like to keep track of a thread that perhaps I wrote so I can update it - but IMO, the “search” function stinks for that - so bookmarking could be helpful. But I would use it very rarely.

I ignored a poster one time, but then I got so irritated trying to figure out what was being said, I just unignored them. I mean, I still ignore them, but just not technically.

I don’t have any subscribed threads in my control panel, either, but I just read the board and open what interests me. all the threads I’ve posted in eventually just vanish to the bottom of the heap, I suppose, once everyone loses interest.

I’ve never tried to find an old one.

“exactly how do you ‘bookmark’ a thread and how is that different from subscribing?”

I’ve never bookmarked a thread, only subscribed. It’s quick and easy to see only threads you’re interested in without having to weed through all the new threads if you don’t want to spend the time doing that. Sometimes I keep up with a thread I don’t post on, too.

I guess what I’m not understanding is why opening the page and only clicking on those with red stars doesn’t accomplish the same thing. You don’t have to weed through new threads at all.

Typically, I will check for “New Posts” or check for my subscribed threads in “My Control Panel”. If I check new posts, there will be 15 pages or so. I will have red stars on say 3 - 5 threads. I usually don’t want to look through all those pages, and will simply check my subscribed threads.

When you click on “My Control Panel” all the threads in which you have posted show up. You are “subscribed” to those threads and they will show up in “My Control Panel” until you “unsubscribe.” I always start by opening the Control Panel to check first on threads in which I have posted. Then I go the New Posts to see if there are new things I want to read.

I also have “Subscribed Forums” that I check regularly but I limit those to 3.

As i said upthread, not for me. My Control Panel is empty. it depends on what options you choose, or chose in the past.

^ But, if you did subscribe to any threads, they would be listed on “My Control Panel” page if there were new posts on those threads.

Right. Just not if I merely post on them.

I bookmark via my browser, esp. for useful pages like CCers’ recipes. :)

I’ve been on CC for over nine years. I have never subscribed to a thread. I have never ignored anyone on CC (using the “ignore” function), and I have rarely viewed my control panel. I open the forum and scan the titles. Those in bold are new or have new posts. Those with the red mark are threads I have participated on.

I see. The default is to subscribe when you post but some of you have set it to “Do not Subscribe.” I never knew that was an option.

Same here. While I don’t officially unsubscribe via the control panel, I’ll just quit looking at the thread anymore. Too many threads devolve to the same theme - lately it seems to be the anti-wall street protesters subject with the same handful of CC’ers spouting their same positions. The other common theme is the ‘have and have-not’/‘the rich aren’t paying enough taxes’ mentality crowd with again the same small group of CC’ers spouting their same tired positions - usually stating exactly the same things they’ve stated over the course on any number of threads. I can tell by seeing the names of certain posters that it’s a thread to avoid because it’s essentially a same subject thread that individual starts all the time with, again, the same predictable position. You probably know who I’m talking about - some of the same people who miss the politics section dearly where they used to do the same thing.

Once you see how the thread has devolved to the same retread topics or a small handful have taken over the thread trying to argue their position with each other, with none of them ever convincing the others that the others’ position is wrong and their own is correct, there’s really no point in continuing with it.

uh oh…I have never “subscribed” without posting…I usually check my “statistics” for threads I’ve posted on. I am an annoying bookmarker! I will look into subscribing.

PS I admit, when I check my control panel, I am a little proud of my two infractions.

I’m a bad girl!

Interesting that you joined CC less than a month ago but you know all about the “certain posters” who posted in the Politics Forum that has been closed for a year. Or that in under 30 days you already know the “predictable positions” of certain CC’ers. Just sayin’.

So it sounds like some of you go straight to your control panel. So then how do you learn about new threads - do you go to the specific forum, such as Parents Forum? If so, then what is the benefit of having “your” threads in the control panel when they are clearly marked on each forum with the red star?

I don’t use the control panel at all, but that’s just me.

Sometimes when I come back some threads that I have posted are in second or 3rd page, so it is easier for me to just look at my controll panel. I also go to other forums (college, internship, admission) sometimes, instead of going to each forum, I just click on the control panel. My setting is “subscribe” whenever I have posted, and I do not get email notification. It is very rare that I subscribe to a thread. If I don’t post, it means I am not interested.

Maybe GladGradDad is really Carnac the Magnificent.

Yes. After I check my control panel for updates to the threads I’m involved in, I go to the “Latest Posts” forum to see what’s new. I might get involved in something there, or I might not be interested. That’s when I move on to see what’s happening in other forums…Admissions, College Search, Parents, Parents Cafe, etc.

They’re easy (or easier) to find. In a forum, sometimes a “red star” thread may have fallen to the 4th page even though only 6 hours have past since its last update. I’m not going to dig that deep just to find my stars. The control panel display them all quick and easy.

:)

While getting email notification can be annoying at times, and can flood one’s email, it can also be helpful when someone posts in a thread that has been quiet for a little while, and that I’d forgotten about, but was of interest. There seems to be some inconsistency WRT how often emails come from active threads. I thought that if I hadn’t read the thread again that the emails would stop, but that seems inconsistent. So some threads that are no longer of interest or which have gotten off on a tangent I may unsubscribe to. Have done it a few times, but not a lot. As for the autonotification, sometimes an email may come with one content, but then when checking the thread the poster has changed the post, or it has been removed. So its sometimes entertaining to have a “history” as it were, for the brief time they stay in email before I delete them.
