No, no invite to apply for HHC scholarship. Just got Dean’s.
I called and did it over the phone.
For codes, they are posted on this website under the hotel tab:
I did notice just now that it doesn’t seem to have a code for the second DA weekend. So maybe there aren’t rooms for that weekend? But you’ll see there are codes for all the other hotels in town.
So apparently all Kelley SSA invites are out. Talked to the scholarship office this morning
Wouldn’t it be nice if they pushed out some Christmas Eve acceptances! ![]()
What does that mean?
yes my twins are still waiting and applied med-Sept
UDel did!
My senior was invited to apply for SSA and told me there are two 1000 word essays she needs to write. This may have been asked already, but how likely is it if a student completes these extra essays that they actually get more merit aid? Right now she has been offered $8k/year. Just debating if she should enjoy her break or actually buckle down and write them. Also, when exactly are they due?
current kelley sophomore here. first off congratulations to your child, 8k/year is absolutely awesome, i received a similar scholarship and really felt wanted at iu. i too was invited to ssa but ended up not applying, i asked similar questions around this time and was told it was a waste of time as it is super competitive to maybe only get another 1 or 2k. many of my friends at iu did end up applying and got nothing, some of which had very competitive applications and essays. feels like one of those can only help, not hurt situations but writing 2 1000 word essays seems a bit much. dont let me be a roadblock if your child still wants to do this, but time spent on ssa could be used for other scholarship opportunities (perhaps locally).
Great advice!
Anybody have a sense of likelihood for non-Kelley SSA scholarships? Wondering if it’s worth the time to write yet another 1000 word essay. She got a Deans of $6k with direct admission to poli sci . She writes well, if the essay actually matters. (We reviewed the list, but it’s vague and says total numbers of SSA recipients and dollar amounts vary every year)
Anyone’s chances are extremely poor. It’s a highly competitive scholarship pool. I’m sure you know that by your question. Worth it is a personal question. IU intentionally is asking for a lot to sus out where it’s someone’s first or top choice because who else writes a one thousand word citation analytical essay over holiday break than someone really serious about IU. And for IU why would they spend their time awarding scholarships to people who don’t really want to attend that badly.
Let’s hope the early Kelley DA days comparatively mean Kelley will release at least some petition decisions by mid-January. If I’m a Kelley petition serious about Kelley I’d consider some refundable hotel reservations those weekends just in case. DA day is an excellent event.
Current Kelley sophomore here who heard my Kelley petition acceptance in mid January 2022. Students cannot officially register for DA days until their official DA notice, so I like the idea of potentially refundable hotel rooms (assuming there is still space available, it fills up very quick).
Hi everyone! Another current student at Kelley willing to shed some light on the classes. You can read the curriculum here:
Business Degree Requirements - Bulletin - Kelley School of Business
Contrary to popular belief, there is no ‘weed-out’ or downward curve in most classes, bar some upper-level finance electives. If anything, the only ‘curve’ that you will see in your first 3 years is your professor adding marks if the whole class does poorly (ie. a 60% average on a midterm).
The counterpoint to that is, there are little to no ‘fluff’ classes that make you feel like you are wasting your tuition dollars. The curriculum is very technical/applied and thus there is a huge ‘work hard, play hard’ culture on campus. The oft-cited freshman concerns are always accounting, economics, finite math and a ‘Computers in Business’ class (K201), but very frankly, these are considered relatively easy when compared to any sophomore, junior and senior-level class.
Kelley students only have 4 courses of Gen Ed requirements, which many waive through AP/dual-enrollment etc. This gives most students space to take an outside minor, double major, or simply graduate early (it’s very doable to do multiple of these, and even add on honors coursework etc). The average graduating senior has a GPA ~3.3/3.4, with the upper-level courses dragging it down and the 100- level classes pulling it up. Hence the standard admissions process is IMO more of an effort-based weed out. Other students and parents etc. please do add on your own experiences.
We are still waiting. DS applied 9/16 pre-business. 4.1 W, 1350 SAT. Tons of leadership, volunteer and top tier ECs. We are OOS/CT. He filed his appeal to Kelley on 9/30. Status changed from applicant to application about 2-3 weeks ago now. Worried that’s a bad sign.
We are in the same boat with similar stats. I am also worried. Kids are getting rejected/deferred left and right from SC, Clemson, Auburn, UTK. Also, no one seems to know exactly what going from “applicant” to “application” really means. Ours changed in late November if I remember correctly.
For what it’s worth (which is nothing), DS applied in early September and it still says “applicant.” Not a single, noticeable change during that entire time. Alas, we wait.
IU would be thrilled to get to a point where it is denying 4.0 and 1350 students and still enrolling the desired yield
this was very well said and i agree 1000% here. allow me to include that there are so many ways to get help in these classes, from extra office hours for classes (varies by prof), weekly review sessions with ta’s, and even just working with other students who are in classes or on dorm floors. all of these helped me a ton! and just throwing it out there, i didnt think k201 was super difficult, i had some prior experience with microsoft access and excel but the teachers give you so much extra practice that is very similar to projects and exams and gives a huge confidence boost. dare i say it was one of my favorite classes at kelley.
speaking more on gen ed’s, these are mostly covered by ap courses as previously mentioned (most people i know including myself got out of the social & historical requirement by taking apush, others used AP science classes like chem and bio to get out of the natural science credit). if not, there are plenty of “easy A” courses out there that fulfill the requirements and boost that gpa. i recently took two classes that double counted for world culture & arts and humanities that were maybe an hour’s worth of work per week that i actually found interesting and got A+ marks in. these can usually be found by checking out the grade distributions online and word-of-mouth from other students.
