Thank you so much! I appreciate everyone’s kind words! He’s had a rough school year, starting with his injury which ended his football season. That was heartbreaking, so I’m hoping for some really good news soon. He always stays very positive, and I know this will all work out, but as a parent, it’s so hard to see them go through things like this. He’s a lot stronger than I am!
This is so important - because for every college, there’s very likely a like school that’s an easier admit. A KU for IU, for example.
Best of luck to all students.
And thank you for posting a decision that did not go your way. CC posted decisions seem to be mainly acceptances with the occasional deferral. It’s important for viewers of this site to see that not all of our kids are being accepted everywhere. Did the same when my boy didn’t get in to PSU and PITT. Good luck the rest of the way. It will work out!
That’s exactly why I did it! I see so many acceptances, which is AMAZING, but I think it’s important to share the not-so-great news so those of us in that situation don’t feel so alone.
That said, I am super happy and excited for those who were accepted!!
I have lived in Indiana my entire life and I want to add some perspective. The 85% acceptance rate is somewhat misleading in my opinion. MOST students that apply to IUB are good students that make A’s and B’s (mostly A’s). Many local kids that don’t have “high stats” apply to colleges like Ball State, IUPUI, or Ivy Tech. So out of all the Indiana public colleges…IUB and Purdue have the most qualified pool of applicants to pick from. To all the parents out there with AWESOME kids that don’t have “high stats” I feel ya! This graphic helped me visualize the odds. Good luck to all…and happy to report my 3.4 AWESOME son got in!!!
IUB Fall 2023 - GPA’s of admitted students
This is so helpful! You just gave me some hope!
Which major is your son?
Pre Sport Marketing & Management - University Division (He was less than one percentage point from direct admit)
Congrats to your son!
I’d take it… he’s in, Congrats! My daughter has a 3.6 applied to psychology. Still waiting, I’d be happy with Pre. With some recent deferrals from southern schools, we need some good news from the north. Thank you again!
I’m rooting for your daughter! It shouldn’t be long now. Thank you for posting her gpa. I think it’s so helpful for the average parent to see the outcomes for all ranges.
It’s so rough on the parent, too! Big hugs to you
Sending good vibes your way!
My son did get accepted to his #3 choice this morning, so thankfully we got some good news!! Now we’re just waiting to hear back from one more of his top choices before he can make his decision.
What was your son’s UW GPA?
Congratulations on the admit this morning, where did he hear from??
Yaaaaay!!! Great news!
Do you think these are weighted or unweighted or the IU recalculated GPAs? I find GPAs very confusing for something that is supposed to be a number. Are there that many kids with perfect GPAs?!
Also worth repeating what I have heard from many high school and college admins … the kids we worry about the most are the ones who never struggled and/or got perfect grades. They are going to get a B or C in college and not know how to handle it emotionally. The kids who have struggled before know not to give up and how to get help!
So it didn’t feel like it at the time, but i guess it was “good” my kiddos had so many academic struggles in high school. Growth mindset!
3.0. Which is definitely on the low end, especially for IU acceptances, but he did have an upward trend. Freshman year was the worst.
Thanks! He got accepted to University of Louisville this morning!
From what I’ve seen, you can’t get a bad grade at a private high school. Our friend’s son at a local private school has a GPA that is .5 higher than my public school son’s and 350pts less on the SAT. That just doesn’t correlate. Also at our public school there are plenty of kids in special ed classes that have 4.0s, with 2 or more teachers in the class. You can’t match them to kids in honors Calc. Finally, the last bit of GPA gaming, all the kids (many with parents working at schools) who claim anxiety and get 50% more time on tests. It also seems that southern high schools have much higher GPAs. Georgia Tech just came out on a podcast saying one public school in GA sent GT 213 applicants, and they had to get to 188th before they found less than a 4.0. THAT IS CRAZY. Again, it’s why SATs were invented. It is literally the only thing you know is truly the kid.
This is such a good point. I was labeled as “gifted” in school–mostly because a lot of things just came easily for me. I definitely was not that much smarter than other kids. But then, when I got to the real world and things were difficult, I did not know how to handle it.
Meanwhile, my son is naturally athletic and understands sports like no one I know. I still struggle to completely understand football, even though he’s played it for years
BINGO!! Their parents sometimes more so than the kids who then email the professors on behalf of kid about unfairly ruining their future… We all worry about grades and test scores. Number 1 indicator of college success is can you handle adversity and colleges have their stat research on what those indicators are. Spoiler alert - not GPA. Which is why TO is such a problem for colleges.
The SAT can be studied so that’s not entirely true. But SAT plus rigor plus GPA is a very strong indicator for colleges. It’s not 1600 SAT is better than 1500 is what parents and kids have trouble understanding and the highest stat most privileged kids really want - clear auto admit to top college because of weighted GPA plus studied for SAT plus essay counselor.
