Indiana University - Bloomington Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

@jefrobertson is that it for SSA $$?

My friend’s son is a Junior at the Kelley School and loves it, it’s an amazing school!

Congratulations to your daughter. She probably petitioned, when did she hear back from Kelley? My son has been waiting for a while to hear back.

Are you in state for PSU? I have heard rumors that Smeal is increasing the entrance to major gpa requirements for their majors, but when I asked at admitted students day they said they weren’t sure if they were going to increase it for the fall or not. I’d like to know what it will be before we commit. Finance is already 3.5.

I haven’t heard about the increase in GPA but I totally agree that you need to know that information before committing! We are OOS for PSU. It would be nice if they stopped moving the goalpost for these kids. Looks like they just made changes so not sure why they need to change again - links below

True but there are whispers that they may be increasing the finance gpa since that doesn’t seem to have changed recently.

How do we hear about the scholarships? On the scholarships portal? By email - personal or IU? Or by mail?

Son’s a Kelley DA. All he got yesterday was an email that his petition for Hutton was not approved. But nothing else.

Did anyone receive anything at all?

Did they say how they were notified?

They said it showed up in their portal in the financial aid section, though I wonder if they saw a GSA scholarship and not SSA.

It’s never a complete process but there are very few SSA to begin with and ALOT have some concept of financial need even if it’s not a major factor. Friday of spring break was not the greatest deadline choice so maybe you’ll see some awards next week.

It is not okay that IU would play this sort of games with merit aid. Why hold out false hope to all these kids that they have a shot at additional merit and make them write another essay about their lives and dreams when clearly the odds are stacked against almost everyone who’s applying for SSA…please convey this parent’s dissatisfaction with the current process to those responsible for it. : (

My daughter received some $ with her EA admission - went through the SSA process so was hopeful perhaps a little more merit aid might be possible… like others nothing posted in the portal or notifications on March 15. Still on the fence and IU is in her top 3 choices, but admit even a taste more would have made IU more compelling.

Has anyone had success calling JSOM admissions? They don’t pick up.

Son is in exact same situation. IU is pretty high on his list but we were hoping for a touch more aid.

I’m sorry everyone felt so hopeful - I’ve been beating this drum for months not to expect any additional aid. At the end of the day most state institutions provide limited aid because it either comes from taxpayers or endowment. Much of the SSA/GSA aid is toward in state students and financial need. That’s on the website so this isn’t like IU hid it from anyone.

I appreciate it is disappointing but receiving a 20% tuition discount via Dean’s scholarship is pretty good as far as aid goes in big publics. And $30kish a year net tuition is pretty good for any private with a bunch of aid after that scholarship. Coming out $200k in cost of attendance versus a big private like ND or USC at $400k is solid ROI out of state.

Not all that much out of state aid in Big10 schools overall. IU is still a tremendous deal. In State school is always going to be better in cost.

The additional essay is dumb and essays overall are dumb with AI and consultants etc… That I agree with everyone on. No need for the additional essay. Frankly no need for it all in admissions anymore.

I had my senior ask a current IU Kelley student who was her HS classmate about the SSA merit aid. They said they wrote all the essays and received nothing and does not know anyone in Kelley who received merit beyond the initial offer that came with acceptance. So I told my senior not to bother taking the time to apply and to work on other essays instead. I hated how vague the invite was with no clear guideline about how much was available and how many students would be chosen. I may have even complained about it on this thread a couple months back.

Selection

The Hutton Honors College reviews each application and will examine the quality of your high school program, the courses you have taken, the quality of your writing, and the nature of your extracurricular and leadership activities.

Awards range from $1,000 to $4,000 per year and are conditionally renewable.

Notification

Applicants selected to receive a scholarship from the Hutton Honors College will receive a notification via their IU email account no later than April 1st.

I pulled this down from the website. Has anyone received an HHC scholarship award?

Are they still requiring the additional recommender for SSA? When my last applied (2021 admit year), you couldn’t use the common app recommender - and having to ask yet another person was why she didn’t do the SSA - she was just burned out on that. That seemed an onerous task and back then it seemed few earned additional money.

I don’t actually know what was required on the SSA, our daughter fills out everything on her own, we don’t get involved.

If there is one thing I could change on my own about college admission is having clear stats on all outcomes including how many awards on scholarships etc… They all have this data. And I’d change parents emoting for the kids on their disappointment (not directed at anyone here) of not realizing whatever perceived dream they all have on certain ranked colleges.

There are hundreds or more awesome colleges at various levels of affordability. It should be way easier for kids and parents to sift through the data and apply where there is high likelihood of acceptance and affordability.

All of your future Hoosiers will have an amazing experience.
