I think it is because Kelley is the flashship school at IU. Asking these highly qualified business students to consider general admission to IU and apply to Kelley later at the end of sophomore year is going to be a hard sell.
Does anyone know the earliest date people may get a decision? Is it confirmed that they are still not doing the October & November batches of acceptances like they used to?
It is because Kelley can hook students early it would admit anyway. The change is very few now get in from direct petition. The more you have the direct auto admit the less likely you are going to apply to peer schools especially when you realize the merit is the same. If you are going to get into Stern or Wharton and go - youâre going anyway so no loss for Kelley as the backup there.
Students interested in IU Kelley please remember that there are several quirks in the process that might need you to petition even if you meet the SAT/GPA thresholds.
One such case is if you attended more than one high school. See more information and track your petitions in the thread below.
Has anyone applied to the honors college this year? Would like an idea of how many essays (if any) are required. Kid is considering but doesnât want to say âyesâ on the common app and then not follow through if itâs too overwhelming on top of everything else she has going on
I believe there is 1 essay, however, the requirements if actually accepted to the honors college are substantial, in my opinion. I am not sure my S25 will want the challenge. I believe you can find the application if you google the honors college.
Itâs a new process this year for Hutton previously it was either auto entry and then it was IUB reviewed all apps for worthiness and then finally a supplemental process. Hutton nor IUB could care less if you indicated interest on the common app and did not apply - itâs just an input to give you access to the Honors App. It wouldnât impact IU admission or merit.
Helpful! Thank you. Might as well go ahead and select yes in that case and feel it out
Does anyone know how many were accepted to Kelley via the petition process last year? It seemed very low compared to previous years.
Donât know the exact numbers. You are right it is much lower than previous years. They should raise the GPA/SAT numbers if need be rather than give false hope. @jefrobertson can chime in.
I heard 15% from petition but it might have been lower after all said and done. 27k apps for 2k spots including the auto admits. Not sure about false hope - take the SAT/ACT. Most of the petition spots now are for legit reasons someone did not take the SAT/ACT which usually means West Coast applicants, multiple high schools; rightsizing the % of women or some variance in the software. Theyâd be just fine taking near zero petitions which would be extraordinary circumstances or first generation students that kind of thing.
Should have said it better. Meant they may have to raise SAT/GPA requirements if they want to keep more seats for petitions.
That is a good score. IU and Purdue accept self reporting scores. For Purdue, you must submit test scores (itâs not a TO school like IU).
I canât say for others but UVAâs McIntire for business is extremely competitve. Students need to apply at the end of their 1st year. IU Kelley does seem very direct and stress free. Maybe itâs considered a notch below UVA, Wharton, etc? I donât mean to put down IU Kelley cos my D25 is also applying there. Just thinking that might be the reason.
Anyone elseâs submitted transcript not showing up in the portal? Counselor says it was submitted weeks ago but the portal says itâs missing.
Anyone else experiencing portal issues?
We had portal issues early (where she didnât get the portal info for weeks and just got it last week). Now, however, it looks like it is fine and it does show the transcript as received and her portal as complete. That said, my daughters was sent weeks ago so maybe they have a backlog of stuff to enter?
Theyâll raise the standards when the auto admits attend at such a rate that they have no more spots for standard admit sophomores. They arenât there yet - but itâs getting closer. One way to raise your rankings is get more apps - so that is helping IU Kelley for now. I donât think they want more seats for petitions - theyâd prefer they attend IU and get in via standard admission.
I guess the question is why donât more direct admits attend? If other top 10 business schools did this they would be flooded with students. What makes Kelley unattractive to many students?
Its a whole different scale. Kelley has 11,000 kids. McIntire (currently with a 2 year program) has 700. Even when they expand to 3 years it will still be ~1100? Not saying that one is better than the other, but itâs hard to compare acceptance rates when the raw # of applications is so different
Again, size and scale. Kelley has more undergrads than Notre Dame, Northernwestern or most private schools (11k).
In 2014 Kelley had 4000 students. They kept that acceptance rate flat for a decade but grew the school by 250% (and in doing so, offering more courses & majors and hiring more professors).
They now offer majors in monetary economics, sustainability, public policy, law and other non-traditional business majors; so many of the top students at IU want to go to law school, work at the Fed/State department, get a Fulbright scholarship etc, are under Kelley despite having no interest in Investment Banking or Consulting.
