iPhone ios10 update

@jshain go to the settings, scroll down to Touch ID and Password. After you use your password to get in, there is a selection to use touch to unblock phone that you can turn off. Is that what you are looking for?

@youcee : I have nothing against updates per se. Far from it. But changes for no apparent reason are no reason for applause in my book. This morning’s fun discovery? When my phone activates because of an incoming message, I still have to slide to log in, but if I start the process, I have to press the home button. Now how the heck does that made sense in anyone’s universe? Grumble, grumble, grumble …

@jshain In order to use touch ID you need a touch ID-enabled phone. I think that’s only for the Iphone 6s and above. Otherwise, you need to click the home button twice.

@IfYouOnlyKnew In terms of staying connected to the internet, have you reset your network settings? NOT reset the phone - that will erase it - but reset network settings makes your phone “forget” a network and you have to type in the wifi password again to get it set up again. Sometimes that is enough to refresh things (warning - your phone will reboot after you reset the network settings). Another option is to turn your router on and off - sometimes there is interference with the signal.

Singersmom, Thanks for your help. Since I am “old school” and using an iPhone 5, I was not seeing what you savvy, techie folks were seeing on your iPhone 6s. Thank you bearcatfan. Having the same issue on my older iPad as well…

My H had all kinds of issues with his iPhone, but I think he’s figured out how to get most of it the way he wants. I really am leery when the updates occur and I think he is set to update automatically since the phone was fine when he went to bed and “not fine” when he woke up.

I keep getting messages that mine will update automatically if it is plugged in between 11 pm & 5 am. Am carefully leaving it unplugged overnight at the moment.

Mr. B was unpleasantly surprised that the new update added some crazy setting to his texting options to send texts with visual effects. Well, if your business contact gets a text that pops on the screen with confetti or something like that, what would that contact think of you? LOL.

If kids like “new skins,” let them have those, but there has to be a “businessperson” setting that leaves the boring, previously fine-tuned to the user’s needs “skin” with each new update.

Mine updated last night. My employer required the update. I hate it.

@BunsenBurner, I had the same complaint and I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of those texting options (my fat fingers kept accidentally selecting them). Finally realized that I could swipe left on the iMessage window and those special options would disappear. I could swipe right to get them back if I wanted them (which I don’t!).

I have an iPhone 5 and I don’t think I have all of the texting options that iPhone6 and 7 people have.

Apple does whatever Apple wants.

I don’t mind changes. I FO mind changes for the sake of making changes. And this one is right up there. I’m getting used to it…and I will adapt. But really, IMHO this did NOT improve the functionality of my phone OR IPad one bit…not one bit. Change just because is a waste.

MSFT did what MSFT wanted… until we got our start button back thank you. AAPL will get there eventually, too, if it begins to screw up much.

@patsmom, his iPhone is a 5S (I think or a 5?) issued by his employer… Definitely not a 6 or 7, lol.

I used to be able to scroll through all the emails so that the little red notification button would go away, for example, i am out and about, I get 44 emails, in the mailbox, I go to the arrows in the upper right corner, I hit it repeatedly and click through all the emails. No notification is showing on the app & it works quickly
With the new update, in mailbox, the arrows on the upper right don’t point up and down, they point left and right and seem to move me around inside the email threads instead of popping from email to email. Anyone find the way to go quickly from email to email?

IOS 1 released June 2007
IOS 2 released July 2008
IOS 3 released June 2009
IOS 4 released June 2010
IOS 5 released October 2011
IOS 6 released September 2012
IOS 7 released September 2013
IOS 8 released September 2014
IOS 9 released September 2015
IOS 10 released September 2016

I would categorize that as “Change just because.”

ETA: So what do we think all the Apple programmers are doing right now? My guess is that they are thinking of changes to make for IOS 11 to be released next September. Silly, right? At this point, they are thinking of ways to make it different, rather than thinking of ways to make it better.

The email grouping is horrible. Anyone know if there is a way to turn it off?

@itsgettingreal17 Change the setting under mail setting to turn off organize by thread and complete thread.

^Thank you!

I like it. Even on my old iPhone 5 and iPad. I only did not like that is came with use of cellular data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor, but I turned it off.

Are the Amber alerts new to this version? One just went off and scared the heck out of me! I googled it and discovered you can turn them off if you click on “Notifications” on the “Settings” page. If you leave them on, they will go off even if you put your phone on “Do Not Disturb.”

I received Amber alerts on previous version.
