As discussed before, DD has 3.5 GPA, 33 MCAT, from U Chicago.

We knew it is not too good, that is why she applied 30+ mostly lower ranking schools, so far no MD school II’s, several DO school II’s are scheduled. Only UCI and UCSD are outright rejects. We are CA residents.

Question: Is her MD hopes dashed? I have seen so many MD IIs on SDN and here,

While no IIs yet is not a good sign, it’s too soon to completely give up hope for MD invites.

Non-rolling schools and several western publics will still be sending out IIs as late as February. I’d keep checking the school specific threads over at SDN to see if other applicants are still getting IIs.

I would think (and I’m not an expert), that it is like undergrad in some ways, that a bunch of kids will get many many acceptances and then they will say yes or no, and then perhaps they will send out another bunch. Undergrad this is done with early decision or rolling admissions. Rolling implies that your app is what matters, but schools may wait to tell you for their own purposes (figuring out the yield of their first choice candidates).

This might help (change 2013 to 2015 obviously):

Namely, ACCEPTANCES GO OUT UNTIL THE CLASS IS FULL for each school. So yes, it is possible your DD is not the top of the line first choice everybody loves her candidate, but I certainly would not think her hopes are dashed. As you noted, only two outright rejects. There is hope everywhere else.

Maybe I’m being too optimistic, but I’d say no, MD hopes aren’t dashed. My child applied two years ago with almost identical numbers as a chemistry major. Got one interview in October, with no additional interviews until December. Anyway, it was pretty stressful, but ultimately accepted at medical school. She knew applicants who had gotten IIs in early September. So I’m hoping that it works out the same for your DD, but I know from experience how tough this is on her and you. You will enjoy complaining about the hassle of arranging travel for the interviews, but once the first acceptance comes-really, that’s a special moment. So keep the faith with my hopes and best wishes for you and her.

“What percentage have answered so far?”
???
Do you mean Secondaries? She got all 30ish Secondaries, she worked like hell to get those returned since August/Sept. Only UCSD did not send her a Secondary. She did not bother with UCSF or UCLA.

She applied mostly lower ranked private, Rush, Commonwealth etc. We had a thread for it:

She did most of them and added some thing like Tufts, Georgetown and Columbia, just for the sake of. She put in total 7 DO schools, II’s are from DO schools now.

NO, M2C, we didn’t even thinking of USASOM.

S (CA resident) and with similar stats did not apply to any DOs, only applied to around 14-15 MDs in CA/OOS. I can remember the nicely written rejection letters arriving. It was a very depressing time. S got 3 IIs in December with interviews in January (OOS). Even more torment as S was waitlisted at each. Then Feb, March, April came and went and more despair. Then my S called, one of the schools called him and asked if he was still interested. My wife cried and still remembers the exact time of day. (Eventually the other two schools called as I assume their waitlists began to move as well)

As I’ve been down this road, I can truly feel your anguish. I would tell you and D that it’s still early and as long as D does not have an outright rejection, have hope. Another family I know had a D pulled off a waitlist in mid June after she had reapplied. Good luck to D and to you. Also maybe minimize looking at SDN.

I still read SDN one year after we went through this. Apparently this year has seen an unprecedented increase in applications due to the advent of the ‘new’ MCAT. IOW, people took the ‘old’ MCAT which does not have the new subjects and wanted to use those scores while they were still accepted. So it may be taking schools longer to go through the added number of applications.

<<<

Yup, I remember the day, the hour, and exactly where I was when son called and said he got his first acceptance. I cried…thank goodness, H was driving.

did I miss this? Is the 3.5 GPA cum GPA or BCMP GPA?

m2ck: The OP’s D graduated in spring of this year and already finished her med school apps. She hasn’t received any II and the OP is wondering if D’s chances for med school are over this application cycle.

@Wirefox
You are absolutely correct. In fact D could graduate with a bio major last year and we had to pay one more year COA as a grade booster.and MCAT prep. Apparently most of the Bio majors at U Chicago are doing that if medicine is in the plan.

Medicine was not in D’s original plan, she decided to go for the subject in her second year, otherwise we will have a different major for her and that will make the life much easier.

artlover: I do not know anything about med school admissions in NY except for what my daughter told me while she was working in an oncologist office during the past two med school application cycles. She worked with scribes and a few of them applied to SUNY schools in NY and one got off a wait list in June of this year. We do not live in NY and this scribe was not from NY either.
What is your D doing this year? Is she doing something that med schools would consider good use of her time? The scribe that got off the wait list this past June had applied the two previous cycles. From what I understand, she was headed to a DO school but once she got off the MD school wait list, she changed her plans.

@wirefox
D is doing two things (part time jobs) One is a paid intern in an University based AIDS clinic, the other is a volunteer to help low income people to get medical insurance.

Did your son accepted the first offer? or the other offers are from better schools?
I suppose you can accept a med school offer then rescind it. In UG schools, you lost the deposit, but how much you will lose in Medical School?

My nephew applied in last cycle, he applied to only one school, his own U. Michigan SOM. He could not afford any other school and he will commute from home to save boarding cost. He got off the wait list in June as well.

I forgot that she’s doing a glide year. Yes, I know that she’s already finished her apps and hasn’t received any II’s yet.

I just forgot that she’s already graduated. I was thinking that she’s a senior who might have some updates to send.

? Can you clarify? She graduated in May 2014 right? Are you saying that she could have graduated in 2013 but because of her late decision to be premed she had an extra year?

Anyway…was the 3.5 her cum GPA or her BCMP GPA?

It is still too early to throw in the towel.

I’m not @Jugulator20 , but …
My son deposited at all the schools that accepted him. He got his deposits back from the schools that he later declined.
