Just looked it up, the schools were notified the last week of April last year, though most winners did not hear until early May.

Unless the process has changed, winners will not hear directly from the foundation for at least a week after the schools are notified. Schools are given about a week to notify the students before the foundation will call to congratulate them. The school has the option of requesting additional time as well if they have some fun way of surprising the student in mind (commencement, or some other event that the student will be attending, for example).

Bottom line: right now, don’t sweat it. Honestly, don’t sweat it in general! I know it’s a big deal, and that me saying this is meaningless (I was glued to last year’s version of this thread every 20 minutes), but these notifications will trickle in slowly once the foundation notifies the schools.

Just wondering (if you would like to share) what you wrote about for the essays. Not the whole thing just brief synopsis. Historical: compared civil rights movement with ows.
50 years earlier: examined a forked path of quiet house wife or radical feminist.
(& haven’t heard yet)

Found an email forwarded by one of my recommendations that was sent by my college rep. In it it says that winners will be notified in late-April. Hopefully this helps some folks relax a little until May rolls around.

Hi all! I’m also anxiously waiting to hear back. I’m pretty confused about the dates now…on the foundation website and on their FB page, it says early-April…but now it’s late-April? I guess it doesn’t really matter, we’ll hear when we hear, but I’d like to have an idea!

For my historical essay, I compared the withdrawal of our troops from Iraq to when we withdrew from Vietnam. For the 50 years one, I talked about how I would have been in the middle of the economic boom following WWII, versus now, when our economy is in a recession or stagnant. Mostly I talked about how I need to be more proactive and entrepreneurial in our current time.

Whew. I’m glad to hear that about the notifications. I was getting depressed lol!

As for the essays, I did my historical on when a neurologist/psychologist discovered how to “awaken” people that were seemingly vegetables with a new drug in the 60’s and they functioned normally for several months before the medicine stopped working and the reverted back. My point was that, as a society, we have lost our creativity and innovation, and we lack what that doctor had and it should be restored.

My past one was about how medical technology would have not been advanced like it is now and my mom would have died of a brain tumor she had when I was in 5th grade and how I might be a totally different person, perhaps aspiring for med school and looking for a cure rather than my current route. :)

for the historical one i talked about a lack of lessons learned from the depression era to now, and for the 50 years ago one i explained how i would be quite similar as i am today, fighting for civil rights, womens rights, and gay rights

They definitely notify the school first, and my scholarship person just could not wait to tell me! she called me right away. the school has til april 20th to tell the students before jkc calls the recepients themselves, but they can also ask for extra time if they want to do a suprise for you. so its close everyone!!! good luck to you all!

mariobross: No, I am not a winner this year. I was a 2011 scholar, I won last year. I had mentioned that I was just here to answer questions earlier in the thread but that was several pages ago now. =)
