Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship 2020

Thanks @iggywiggly! Congrats on Smith that is great news.

@fabricev That is pretty much my list as well with two more universities that focus on research.

Ughh this wait seems like it’s taking forever with the Corona virus slow downs and being under house arrest. I am normally on campus 16 hours a day.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to pop in here and tell you how excited I am for all of you, I was in your shoes this time last year and I remember how anxiously I was awaiting any news. You are all magnificent, and you are going to continue to do spectacular things. Notifications will be out soon and I am so looking forward to congratulating you and hearing where you all choose to go!

@FABRICEV I am just being nosy but is there a reason you chose not to apply to Williams? Also no Yale? Do share your secrets and motivations?

@rainbowbritey Thanks for the encouragement!

I feel like I know you from pouring over previous years posts. It’s getting so close to the deadline for finding out.

My applied for universities are
Amherst
Williams
Yale EWP
Brown RUE
Cornell
Swarthmore
Stanford
Duke
Two local universities

@spicymustard would you mind sharing your ranked top three?

Well… that is a bit more complicated then it sounds. They all have pluses and minuses.

I am a Computer Science major and most of these schools are liberal arts based. I love research and Brown, Cornell, and Stanford top the charts in my opinion in the direction of Computer Science research overall. Yet, at the same time at some of the smaller colleges I could truly lead research in the direction of one of my passions, sustainability. Williams, Amherst, and Swarthmore fall in this category. Then there is the adaptability of the RUE and Eli Whitney programs that would offer me more flexibility for attending college. I also forget to mention I applied to Rice as well and it has amazing research.

I honestly don’t know if I will get into any of them and cant really make a ranking until(if) I get accepted. Until I received my JCKF Semi-Finalist designation I never dreamed of applying to any of these colleges or had any knowledge about them. I need to do drastically more research on each college and I can only commit to that expenditure of time if I was accepted. They are all so foreign to me and I will not be able to do a campus visit with the Corona Virus.

Even if I do not win the JCKF Finalist I am thankful for being told that I had a shot at these universities. My primary choice before all this refuses to accept half my community college credits and would have resulted in over $50,000 in student debt to complete. No student from my Community College has ever gone to any of these Ivy League schools. No one I spoke with at my college knew the common app or could offer advice.

@spicymustard I gotcha. I also never really considered any of these schools before JKCF. I’m glad that Smith’s Ada Comstock program checks so many boxes for me. Of course, I’ve also applied to EWSP but I never really considered Yale a genuine option because I think my chances of getting in are very slim. If I am accepted there, I’ll have a very difficult choice to make.

I’m sure you will get into a wide variety of these schools. Just your postings on here and the fact that you’ve made the All-USA team and Hites (did I get that right?) proves that you’re one of the top CC students in the nation and I can’t imagine anywhere not wanting you. To be honest, when I saw your posting on the EWSP thread I was a bit intimidated.

On a personal note, I’m really glad that you have mentioned that your CC hasn’t had another student get into Ivies. I’m from a CC that is focused on agriculture and vocational programs. No one from it has ever been a JKCF semifinalist and no one I talked to even knew about the program or could help me through this process. I’m not aware of anyone even transferring out of state from my CC. When I was at Catalyst, I saw all the people from these huge community colleges get all these awards and my PTK chapter had to fight tooth and nail to get funding for my advisor and I to attend. We almost weren’t able to go even though I was participating in a competition that I had won a spot in at regionals. It just became very clear that not all CCs are created equal. I don’t know, there’s just something really inspiring to me about you mentioning that you’re also in the middle of nowhere and that your school doesn’t have any Ivy League alumni. You are breaking the glass ceiling!! You succeeding makes me realize that I’m not alone and my goals are attainable!

This was my second year being invited to apply to the Eli Whitney program. I was going to this year too until I read that they only accept between 2 and 10 people, max, to that program per year. I decided it was too much work. I was considering applying to Trinity’s ID program but I am wanting an on campus situation and Trinity doesn’t offer their non traditional students housing at all. Then I got my Mount Holyoke acceptance. That’s been the goal since my first semester at my CC. So, I’m done. Already paid my deposit.

@MHGirl615 YEEEESSSSS YOU GO GIRL!! Amazing work, congratulations!

If I go to Smith, we might cross paths. If I recall correctly, Smith and Mt. Holyoke are co-members of the five college consortium and I fully intend to explore all of the different campuses should I enroll there.

Williams notification for transfers just went out. Check your portal.

Rejected. Ayyyoooo. It is okay though. Stanford is the only school that I care so much about. To those who are receiving other decisions as well, don’t beat yourself up! You are what you do; not necessarily what you attend!

@spicymustard did you get into Williams???

@iggywiggly THANK YOU! Yes, 5 college consortium. I, unfortunately, do not get to partake in that much. I am transferring 53 credits and MH has a 64 credit residency rule as well as a 1-year language rule. I knew about the language rule and I attempted to take Latin at my CC last semester. I barely made it out of that class with a B. There was no way I was finishing the year. I started out loving it and by the end of the semester, I hated it. I am SUPER glad I didn’t take it again this semester because I can’t even imagine trying to do that class online! I want to take Mandarin and I believe that the only way to do that is through UMass. So almost all of my outside credits will end up going to that. BUT I will be at MH when you come for classes for sure!

Anyone get an email from Amherst that decisions will be out soon?

@RainbowBritey Well, I did not apply to those schools just because they did not attract me as the others did, in all terms. My priority school is Cornell and then comes Princeton because even in their transfer applications they show me that they are the right fit for me and what I aspire for my future, my community, and the world. There are more to add but, i think this kind of explain why.

@thelegitbrian Yesss I got the email, too! so anxious to know how it goes haha.

The Jack Kent Cooke desicions will be released in some days! I hope you all become Cooke Scholars !
Looking forward to celebrate with you!

If you want, you can add me in my instagram : Jfabrizzio Cev
It’d be nice to talk to some of you since you all are great achievers!

@kb199977 That would be a negative. Williams had one of the earliest deadlines and I had only a few days to complete the application. I also had no idea what I was doing. Applying to Ivy League colleges is much like amateur plumbing. You figure out what you were supposed to do after you are done. Its a shame, I was looking forward to saying Hi to @RainbowBritey

@thelegitbrian Yes! I received an email today saying they would make announcements next week or earlier.

Havent received any email from them. Its crazy to see how selective the emails appear to be even for stuff like result announcements.

Just to be safe. The email sending the announcements is scholarships@jkcf.org?

@Ltkmk Are you referring to the result announcements for Amherst or JKCF? For JKCF, I don’t think anyone has received an email saying results will be out soon. It is just from previous emails or from last year forum I believe.

This was from the email back in Jan:

"Please pay close attention to any emails you receive from the Cooke Foundation. Notification to Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship recipients will occur via email in April 2020. "

So based on my research, I’ve noted that High School Seniors are first in the announcement and then undergrad transfers. How? Last year the Press release High School Seniors was on March 22nd, a Friday. The Undergrad Transfers scholars were announced on the Press Release on April 24th, 2019 (on a Wednesday). How does this apply to 2020? Well technically based on that schedule, High school scholars should have been announced March 20th (Friday). However it has been 2 weeks, so I believe high school scholars will be announced on April 10th, 2020. This is if they decide to do the Press Release on Friday like last year. However, in 2018 the High school scholars were announced April 3rd(Tuesday). Then on April 10th(Tuesday), the Undergrad Transfer scholars were announced. Now time to add variables, as we all know, COVID19 has pushed everything back. (So my estimates are: April 10th for High school scholars and April 29th for Undergrad Transfer). I could be wrong, but this is my speculation. However, my estimate for April 29th would be the official press release. So I believe Community Colleges will start getting notified the Week of April 13th. The anticipation is something else lol! Boy I can’t wait
