M10 2025 Freakout Thread!

Anyone get FA info for Thacher? We got ours three hours after an admit email for another school, but still nothing from Thacher. It’s making me very nervous.

Thank you, this is really thoughtful.

Man, people on this forum are too nice. The number of genuine unprompted kind words I’ve gotten from strangers over the internet is touching. Thank you so much (to anyone who’s ever helped me out)! It’s really helping me get over my post-M10 depression

We were able to successfully move my daughter off two waitlists, including her top choice, by offering to go full pay for attendance a few years ago (albeit these were tier 2 schools, not SPS, Andover, or Exeter). We also had a friend able to do this with their two kids. It just depends on the year, most of the top schools can fill their spots off the wait list with full pay, but some cannot and it matters. So if you are able, it may give you your best shot. Worth a try if your financial situation allows it.

Hi everyone I want to congratulate everyone on their decisions yesterday!! I’m new to this whole process and my parents aernt very big on me being super academically challenged so when I proposed boarding school they thought I was joking. I only applied to Choate but was rejected for junior year, could anyone check my thread to chance me on reapplying next year. Or if it would be a waste of time. Thanks so much and congrats!!

Hi, I was in the same place as you expect I decided to apply to more schools .

PM if you have any questions!

What are some expenses outside of tuition, room & board that we should factor into our budget? I don’t mean things like clothes and room decor, more official expenses….

my brother went to exeter for just his senior year an i believe your application needs to be similar to a college one in that you have already done most of the things you need to do to get into college (passion project, good ssat score, etc) that’s just what he did si not sure

What if I reclassed for junior year?

They can really only reclass you if you ask.

Choate offers you to reclass.

That’s a good strategy.

This is unfortunately unlikely to be true, at least for the younger grades. They let in 0-15 at Exeter off the waitlist (directly from the website) and it has little to do with your child’s interest; it relates to whatever particular “bucket” they’re looking to fill. That being said, if you tell them you WILL go if you get in, that cannot do any harm because of yield protection.

My oldest child attended Exeter. I’m not sure she knew any kids who came in off the waitlist. However, she knew many many repeat 9s (easier to get in that way), as well as repeat lowers and uppers. So if you don’t end up getting in, it doesn’t at all mean that this option is closed to you. I will also say, at least at Exeter, there is no issue to inclusion or acceptance if you arrive “late.” It’s a small community; Exonians are completely excited about and very welcoming to students who enter later. In many cases, they’re also athletes, which gives them an instant community.

Long way of saying: being waitlisted SUCKS (our 2nd child is currently on one), but you don’t have to give up your dream if it doesn’t come through this year.

are “buckets” like finding a kid who swims, finding a specific race, another international students, etc?

There are lots of buckets. Male/female. FP/FA. Day/Boarder. Rare state/country vs. MA (sorry MA).

Then things that can get quite niche-y depending on how specifically they prefer/need to build a class like athlete (but maybe ice hockey not football), artists (but maybe tuba player and not graphic arts), brainiac (but maybe IMO not poet), etc.

This is a good question. Each school will vary as some schools cover some of these items’ costs in their tuition while at other schools these things are extras that come up throughout the year. Some you need to pay for, while others are optional/left to parent’s discretion. So the list is a consideration that varies by school. Some of it can add up, but much of it is optional/choice. Also depending on FA some things could be covered/or a %. Worth asking about at revisit days, etc.

Sure others will have items to add. But these are the items that quickly come to mind:

Books (used, new, borrowed, online, school issued)
Laundry (free, machine pay, service)
School snack shacks
Club/team fundraising (cash on hand)
Saturday night feeds
Dorm funds( parties/feeds/activities)
Special interest funds (parties/feeds/activities)
DoorDash
Tix to special events/shows/concerts
Team uniforms
Team training camps
Travel
Spending money trips to town, etc
Annual School fundraising
Travel to and from home/airport/etc
Dorm room essentials

Hope that helps. Sure I forgot some stuffs - as I said some schools cover many of these items while others varying. Many are at each families discretion esp. since schools know many are on FA.
