Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted? Schools like exeter and andover super competitive, i guess the competition was high this year.

• Rank: School doesn’t rank
• Other stats:

Subjective:
• Interviews: (9/10) All interviews were excellent except choate which had a little flaw
• Essays: Incredible (9.5/10)
• Math Rec: Blind, I think he likes me
• English Rec: Blind, I think she likes me
• Personal/Extracurricular Rec: (9/10) Very good
• Principal/Counselor Rec: Blind, She likes me
• Sports (if any): Tennis, competitive level in state, played many tournaments

Location/Person:
• State or Country: Brazil
• Current School Type: Private
• Ethnicity: White / Latino
• Gender: M
• Grade Applying For: 9
• Age: 14
• Financial Aid/Full Pay: FA

Strengths: I’m diverse, from a different country, and have rather unique interests. Showcase that in my essays.

Weaknesses: Grades, SSAT. I’ve had drops in math/science grades in middle school.

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
Honestly, I don’t know why I was accepted into Exeter. They probably really liked me as a person in the interview. I’m grateful to have this opportunity. To anyone reading this who is doubting their chances because of your grades, just remember this application, because I didn’t have stellar grades and still managed to get into one of the best schools.

Accepted: George, Hill, Mercersburg, and Peddie
Rejected: Lawrenceville, St. Andrew’s
Wait listed: Blair
Likely Attending: Hill or Peddie

Stats:
• SSAT/ISEE/TOEFL/PSAT: SSAT-75th percentile
• GPA Unweighted/Weighted: mostly As, a few Bs, school doesn’t do GPA
• Rank: school definitely does not rank!
• Other stats:

Subjective:
• Interviews: mostly 9/10, except Lawrenceville where the AO had zero interest.
• Essays: 9/10
• Math Rec: 9/10
• English Rec: 8.5/10
• Personal/Extracurricular Rec: 9/10
• Principal/Counselor Rec: 8/10
• Sports (if any): swimming but more of just a participant
• Instruments (if any): none
• Other ECs (if any): musical theater, model UN, a bunch of clubs and committees
• Hook: none

Location/Person:
• State or Country: Pennsylvania
• Current School Type: Quaker day school
• Ethnicity: white
• Gender: female
• Grade Applying For: 9th
• Age: 13
• Financial Aid/Full Pay: full pay

Strengths: Interviews really well and seems like the kind of kid who gets along with most people. A teacher called her “social glue.” Coming from a Quaker school likely helped her at George.

Weaknesses: SSAT was “weak” (even though it was still pretty good!).

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted? Rejected at Lawrenceville because clearly not a fit. WL at Blair because we were a late applicant and did a remote interview on March 5. The rejection from St. Andrew’s is a bit of a headscratcher. We thought the interview went well and that her personality was a good fit. I know it was competitive, but I thought she would at least get WL. Oh well, she has good options.

Accepted: Peddie, Horace Mann, Spence
Rejected: Lawrenceville, Andover
Wait listed: Exeter, Choate, Taft
Likely Attending: Horace Mann unless I get off the waitlist for another school

Stats:
• SSAT/ISEE/TOEFL/PSAT: 96T, 94Q, 99V, 74R
• GPA Unweighted/Weighted: My school doesn’t have GPA’s
• Rank: My school doesn’t do ranks
• Other stats:

Subjective:
• Interviews: I felt like they were pretty good, except Lawrenceville and Taft which were a little awkward. I thought Peddie and Choate were great and both interviewers complimented me. Exeter was a little awkward because it was an alumni interview and it was virtual, and they never did a parent interview.
• Essays: I thought they were great, I mostly wrote about my experience playing cello and public speaking events and how they shaped me. Parents said they were very well-written, but I didn’t get feedback from teachers or anyone
• Math Rec: 10/10, I’ve known her since 6th grade and she really likes me, I’ve gotten A’s in her class every year
• English Rec: 9/10, only knew him starting this year but he has seen me grow into a more outgoing person in just a few months. Plus, he compliments my writing very often
• Personal/Extracurricular Rec: 10/10 Cello teacher I’ve known for 6 years. I’m very close with her and she’s helped me with a lot of competitions, orchestras, and auditions
• Principal/Counselor Rec: My principal knows me very well so either 9/10 or 10/10. Tbh he reads people really well and always tells me that I’m a mature and kind person.
• Sports (if any): Volleyball, school captain in 8th grade; Swimming for 7 years
• Instruments (if any):
Cello: Elite international music competition (2nd prize) —> Performed at Carnegie Hall; Vitas international music competiton (3rd prize); ARCO youth orchestra, performed in nursing homes and libraries—> President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award (100 hrs); New Jersey Youth Symphony Orchestra Philharmonic; School orchestra principal cellist; Selected to orchestra to open for Itzhak Perlman
Also piano, but no awards
• Other ECs (if any):
National Spanish Exam bronze medal

• Hook: Good at writing and likes English, and also probably cello and orchestra ? I felt like my essays were really good

Location/Person:
• State or Country: New Jersey (Northeast, close to NY)
• Current School Type: Private k-8
• Ethnicity: Chinese-American
• Gender: Female
• Grade Applying For: 9
• Age: 13
• Financial Aid/Full Pay: full pay

Strengths:
Probably cello/orchestra and writing skills. Maybe recs since I didn’t have to worry at all about them, and I was confident my teachers liked me.

Weaknesses:
Although my biggest strength was cello, I still didn’t really have as much as I should’ve in terms of accomplishments. Didn’t really have anything special other than cello

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
I think I was accepted to Peddie because the interview went very well, interviewer said he was impressed by my level of reflection and maturity. Probably accepted to Horace mann and Spence because my school has a great connection with them and sends a lot of kids to those schools every year, and interviews went well. I think I was waitlisted from Exeter because of the interview, and also might not have shown enough interest since I never visited the campus, same goes for Andover and Lawrenceville.

No national awards? Not an interesting person I guess.

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
Really disappointed in myself tbh, I really expected to get into either Andover, Exeter, or Choate. I think being Asian and doing Asian stuff (piano, math) made me not stand out, which gave AOs no reason to accept me. I’m not sure why Cate accepted me, because it is also very selective and my Cate essays weren’t that good compared to other schools.

Might apply again next year. If you have any ways you think I could buff my application up PM me. Thanks.

Accepted: Andover, Lawrenceville

Rejected: none

Wait listed: Exeter, Episcopal, Hotchkiss

Likely Attending: Andover

Stats:

• SSAT/ISEE/TOEFL/PSAT: ISEE, 8 Verbal reasoning, 9 reading comp, 7 quant reasoning, 8 math achievement.

• GPA Unweighted/Weighted: 3.98 unweighted, 4.11 weighted.

• Rank:

• Other stats: Taking APUSH, AP Lang Comp, Precalc.

Subjective:

• Interviews: Andover: 8/10 first interview I did; it went well but nothing spectacular. Exeter: 7/10 the interview was 15 mins after Andover and I didn’t really vibe with the interviewer. Looking back I also think I dodged one of his questions, unintentionally, but that was not a great look. Hotchkiss: 9/10 Very good interview. I had a great conversation and the inerviewer complemented my speaking. Lawrenceville: 8/10 another fine interview: nothing super exciting. Episcopal: 7.5/10 a chill interview, but I think it was fine.

• Essays: Andover 10/10: I had a blast writing these and I didn’t procrastinate them. They are unconventional and I think my personality shines so brightly from them. Exeter: 9/10 very good essays. Lawrenceville: 9/10 another set of very good, unique essays. I also love my responses for the short answers. Hotchkiss: 8/10 I did these very last minute and it might show. Not terrible, but also not very exciting. Episcopal: 7/10 some of these were not great, but most of them were fine. Another set of last minute essays.

• Math Rec: 6/10. She’s my online math teacher I’ve had for 1 semester: she doesn’t know me very well.

• English Rec: 7/10. An absolutely fine recommendation. She’s also been my teacher for 1 semester, but my english class is more interactive so we have a deeper connection, and she could speak to my personal qualities a lot more.

• Personal/Extracurricular Rec: Art rec: 9/10. I love my art teacher and I think she knows me very well. Personal rec: 10/10. My advisor/mentor wrote this for me and it praises me a lot. She is very enthusiastic.

• Principal/Counselor Rec: 10/10. I have a great connection with my counselor and she has written a lot of amazing recs for me before.

• Sports (if any): Downhill skiing 8 years.

• Instruments (if any):

• Other ECs (if any): Origami 8 years, painting 3 years, Jack Kent Cooke Young Scholar, SEGL, had my own origami exhibition.

• Hook: Maybe Origami and underrepresented area

Location/Person:

• State or Country: Montana

• Current School Type: Public

• Ethnicity: Latino

• Gender: M

• Grade Applying For: 10th

• Age: 15

• Financial Aid/Full Pay: Full pay

Strengths: Underrepresented, competitive national scholarship, niche hobby

Weaknesses: Lower-end ISEE, less community engagement/impact, and not the deepest recs from core teachers.

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?

I didn’t submit an art portfolio for Hotchkiss and Episcopal—I didn’t have time and I didn’t know where to submit for Episcopal, and I think that’s a key part of me since Origami is my biggest strength. I also might have come off as if I wasn’t excited about going to Episcopal. I wrote some amazing essays for both Andover and Lawrenceville and I think that both of my interviews were solid. I got accepted to the Andover LEAP fly-in program and I don’t know if that contributed to that decision because I also did Exeter’s fly-in and didn’t get in. I don’t really know why I didn’t get into Exeter—I think the interview was my weakest part of my application but I felt everything else was fine.

Likely Attending: LPS, or any school I get off the waitlist for (unlikely)

Stats:
• SSAT/ISEE/TOEFL/PSAT: 96T, 99Q, 90V, 91R
• GPA Unweighted/Weighted: School doesn’t do GPA- All A’s, besides an A- in Art
• Rank: School doesn’t do rank, N/A
• Other stats:

Subjective:
• Interviews: For Andover, Exeter, SPS, and Groton, I’d say they went excellent. 9-10. Conversation felt very natural, the interviewers were friendly, we went overtime, and they were gushing over me in the parent interview (according to my mom- they all said something along the lines of: “She’s a great fit for our school, very mature/talented for her age, very thoughtful, very friendly, loved the conversation, we’d love to have her, how old is she again??” etc. Choate and Middlesex were notably worse, but not bad. 6-7/10, nothing too special (might have had something to do with Choate being online)
• Essays: I semi-rushed these in the last couple of weeks, but I still think they were pretty good. 7-8/10.
• Math Rec: 10/10. He had my older brother and I’d known him for multiple years. He volunteered to write my letter before I even asked. I TAed in his math class. I am 100% confident that a recommendation letter cannot get better than this. I know he glazed me to the earth’s end.
• English Rec: 7/10, I’m a great student and she likes me but nothing TOO special. Couldn’t have been the reason I was WL.
• Personal Rec (Drum Teacher): 7/10. We’re really close but he only knows me as my drum teacher, and I’m good at the drumset but not exceptional.
• Principal/Counselor Rec: Great, 9/10- I’ve known her for multiple years, and I’m the president of the club she advises. She really loves me and she went over my ECs/Awards so she could write a really thorough rec letter for me.
• Extracurricular Rec (Computer Science Teacher): 9/10. He says I’m the best student he’s ever had and that I have a bright future ahead. He assured me he wrote a great letter, and he also recommended me for a CS tutoring job with a 20% acceptance rate, which I got! He is a recent Cornell grad for Computer Science, so he’s extremely accomplished himself, basically a genius, and he says that I’m much further ahead than he was in 8th grade.
• Sports (if any): Travel soccer (not good enough to get recruited, but submitted videos and reached out to coaches)
• Instruments (if any): Drumset (not good enough to get recruited, but submitted videos and reached out to teachers). I play townwide jazz band, and was featured in some newsletters
• Other ECs (if any):

-Speedcubing (the sport of solving Rubik’s cubes fast.) I submitted videos for this, brought a Rubik’s cube to my interviews, and included my state/worldwide rankings, which are high (not including my recognition/rankings to avoid easy doxxing, but trust me, it’s pretty impressive). I can solve a 3x3 Rubik’s cube in 10 seconds and a 2x2 in 2. Keep in mind this is also a very male dominated activity. Competed many times.

-Computer Science, my main thing. Competed in tons of competitions and won lots of awards. I am also hired for a paid position as a Teaching Assistant at a prestigious local company. I really wish I could list all of my awards/hackathons but there are a ton of them and I could be easily doxed. National/state level. Couple of international awards.

-Top 3 Regional, top 2% statewide in a yearlong stock-market competition

-MATHCOUNTS, IMC, Math Kangaroo, AMC8 math awards (national and state recognition, over several years). A couple of international awards.

-President of school Asian Affinity Club (2y)- largest club in the school district. Organized many events with hundreds of people in attendance.

• Hook: Woman in STEM, Fatherless(? don’t know if this counts as a hook. My dad passed when I was little)

Location/Person:
• State or Country: Massachusetts (Boston Area)
• Current School Type: Public K-8
• Ethnicity: Asian (rare type of Asian though, most people haven’t heard of it)
• Gender: Female
• Grade Applying For: 9
• Age: 14
• Financial Aid/Full Pay: need close to full FA

Strengths:

Interviews. I completely charmed them, besides Choate and Middlesex. All my stats/grades were up to par. 3/5 recommendations were absolutely amazing, they glazed me to the end of the earth, and the other two were still pretty great.

Weaknesses:

Essays not strong enough, only a couple high level national/international awards, not enough impact in my sport/instrument. Also- Asian who’s main spikes are Math, CS, and competitive rubik’s cube solving.

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?

I don’t really know. I waited a few days before posting this so I could have more time to reflect… and I think it’s just the fact that there were tons of qualified applicants, and I don’t have an outstanding hook. I’m not legacy, not FP, not a recruited athlete. In the back of my head I was trying to prepare myself for a situation like this but I still thought I had a good chance at getting into at least one school, considering how great the interviews went. Also, the Boston Area is OR for Andover and Exeter, so steep competition.

Strengths: Woman in STEM and I’m on track to have published a medical paper by the end of ninth grade which I included in my app, aswell as community service.

Weaknesses: GPA dropped around 0.2 in 7th grade

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted? I think I recieved 11/13 acceptances, and I believe that those were for two main reasons. I am a AA Full Pay candidate so it would boost diversity without costing the school. I also am from the SW. I had an abundance of community service and various leadership roles in most of my clubs, and what I believe to be stellar letters of rec. I’m really talkative and very good one on one which I think definitely benefited me.

Subjective:
• Interviews: Honestly, most of them except my Hotchkiss one went pretty well (was expecting reject from them because of it). My Deerfield and Andover went extremely well (one of my interviewers followed up with a personal email about my essay later). 8-9/10 for most. 5/10 for Hotchkiss
• Essays: Would assume my essays were pretty good, as I’m an art kid, and one of my interviewers reached out about it. Mostly were about how my hobbies helped me conquer anxiety.
• Math Rec: Certainly one of my best recs despite this being her first year teaching me, my teacher and I are very close, I’m also an excellent student in her class.
• English Rec: 8/10, it was the beginning of the year when she submitted it, but I was a part of a club she sponsored before.
• Third Teacher Rec: I have no doubts about this one, I’ve known this teacher for 3 years, and also know them outside of school.
• Personal/Extracurricular Rec: 7/10, both were likely good, but English is not the first language of either teacher.

Strengths:
Won many awards, genuine character, and definitely connected with my interviewers. Wasn’t afraid to talk about my weaknesses and fear, which I think resonated with them. My state was also an added boost.
Weaknesses:
Looking at everyone’s portfolios, I’m quite surprised I wasn’t rejected. I do not play a sport, and for my race, there were likely many others with similar portfolios. Without a hook, I don’t think being a ‘good kid’ made me stand out enough.
Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
Not quite sure, but if I didn’t overanalyze, it was probably just because there are a lot of students like me.
