Mad Men

And for those of us who have watched Mad Men from the beginning: watching those early episodes are even more illuminating.

^^You’re giving me permission to spend hours watching them all over again!

How the worm has turned! Don counseling Pete on marital fidelity. What’s gotten into you Don–a happy marriage? Is this undermining the entire concept of the show? I recall the startling revelation of the first ever episode, which established the premise, of watching Don cat around NYC but winding up in the last “honey I’m home” scene at the doorstep of his Westchester home.

Say it ain’t so Don.

It’s like Mickey Rourke counseling Matt Damon to behave himself on the set of The Rainmaker, except Matt Damon didn’t really need the advice and Pete does.

Pete wants to be Don. And he hasn’t a clue as to what makes Don tick. Good luck with that Petey. He can’t even fix the damn sink, so don’t even think about doing it in your t-shirt in front of the ladies.
Oh I do love talking about fictitious characters as if they were real. :)

Don’t mess with my suspension of disbelief. ;)

geezermom, Don’t tell me you have someting better to do. :)

^^ But I have to catch up on past seasons of Justified!

I’m caught up now. I liked the last two episodes. Last night’s was more conceptual. Wow, that scene where it got rough between Don and Megan was very intense and felt very real and the LSD scene was also well done. I’ve never liked Pete and can’t say I minded seeing him get trounced in the fight scene. Also, that dinner party seemed so incredibly tense to me. Anyone looking for another show, I recommend Breaking Bad.

I work in a job that basically slows down mid-April, so I have several episodes waiting for me. I cheated a bit by listening to the interview with the creator on Fresh Air. Is anyone going to watch Girls or Veep on HBO?

Anyone notice the reference to Dr. Leary at the LSD party?

Anyone else notice there doesn’t seem to be an overall narrative arc this season? Each episode seems to be a complete story on its own.

I loved the LSD scene where Roger opens the Vodka bottle and it is playing Russian music and when he smokes the cigarette it has the accordian noise.

Am I the only wondering about the cost of his divorce, is this going to come back to him fathering the baby?

It will be interesting to see if Don now changes because he was put on notice regarding his “honeymoon” phase.

Theory:
Don is going to end up being the wisest, the one whose experiences (wild, searching for himself) sort of ground him, or at least, give him a jaded and almost serene perspective…
He is aging. And he will always be a bit of an observer, outsider, illusive, even to himself.

Watched GIRLS. Interesting. (A bit depressing for parents of “girls”, errrr young adult females.) Definitely different type of show, so that is good. Not sure there is enough “depth” or plot to keep it going, though.

I agree bulletandpima (weird nic, by the way) that Roger’s tripping was hilarious. Apparently, they filmed a lot more fun moments, and edited down to make it more overall somber.

I liked how edgy this episode was - the jarring edits, garish colors - it all had the look of a nightmare (or a bad trip.)

I don’t know how Don and Roger are going to end up… but I’m sure glad I’m along for the ride.

Does anyone want to place bets as to who will be the first to show up at work with a Nehru jacket?

We love the series. My husband is Sally’s age and grew up a few miles from Ossining, where the Drapers “lived”. And, although in a different business…and minus the great looks/wit that was my fil. My husband loves the show. After growing up in “the business” and very blase about it, when we met someone from the show my husband was so excited. He says that this was the “truth” back then.

Fascinating note: Roger’s wife (after the LSD scene) said that her father spoke Yiddish (to Roger’s comment that she was speaking German while tripping on LSD) and that’s the language she was “probably” speaking. That would mean that Roger’s wife is at least half Jewish. Roger has made numerous anti semitic references. Who knew that his second wife was Jewish?

I noticed the Dr. Leary comment as well.

And, from personal reference, Betty’s reaction to being found cancer free wasn’t “normal”. When one has been given their life back they smile…at the very least. Betty either has a death wish or she is one sick woman.

Betty is not exactly the picture of (mental) health.

Ya think? :)

I think Betty was hoping to attribute her weight gain to something more uncontrollable than calorie counting. Not that calorie counting is easy. The blame for her weight gain shifted from cancer to a weakness in herself.

Ug. Betty, Betty, Betty,

She sure is pretty though. I bet her weight comes off TV fast, like the next few episodes. Everyone wants to see Betty in those stylish dresses.

I hope she cheers up a bit.
