so I shouldn’t be hoping to see any HBO or WB? sigh…I wonder if they have Hockey Night in Canada…in English. I’ve had my own TV since I was like 7 and I’ve had digital TV for 2 or 3 years now, so I really, really hope they have good tv. Otherwise, I’m going to have to make sure my laptop has a lot of memory so that I can download these shows.

yeh dont expect HBO, ESPN and all those good channels

btw does anyone know if we can use DC++ in McGill…i heard queen’s people are allowed to use it…caz that would be awesome, we could download movies in like half an hour and songs in seconds

why wouldn’t they allow us? Is DC++ like bit torrent?

well i heard DC++ along with other file sharing programs were banned in most US colleges because people share copyrighted material…well i know they certainly control ur downloads for sure in america…i was just wondering if canadian colleges do the same…

yeh DC++ is like bittorrent (except ur need to go to certain websites to get the torrents thus much harder to close down)…its the program of choice in colleges as it is much faster than bittorrent.

yeah i read somewhere sometime back that mcgill banned all file sharing on campus

how do they control it?

i’m not really sure…i don’t think they’ve enforced it yet…but they’re already blocking potentially unsafe websites which may make users prone to viruses

which laptops are u guys getting?
im looking at dell 9300,

i’m just going to bring the one i got at the moment…it’s a hp pavillion zt something…it’ll last me for a few years

in america they control those filesharing programs by putting a limit on ur downloads…therefore you cant download big files and if u exceed the max. bandwith or watever they cut off ur internet connection.

you sure its banned in canada? i heard the canadian court ruled that filesharing networks such as gokster were legal in canada

NO, don’t take away my precious bittorrent, how else will I expand my 15,000 song library?

“How do they control it?”
Either blocked websites or blocked ports.

file sharing is deff legal in canada

you’ll all grow fond of a program called SHARESCAN which is a Rez wide app that lets you browse ppl within your residence- you can dowload their entire music collection in less than 5 minutes- people will most likely cram up on Family Guy, OC, and Desperate Housewives episodes… its a great program for rez. how i wish i still had it.

I heard that they ruled in Canada that downloading files is legal, but uploading isn’t or something like that. I’m definately going to have to download the episodes of most of the shows, especially if they play on HBO and WB. I hope they don’t take away bit torrent either. Although sometimes it downloads reeeaally slow. I heard at UofT they had a filesharing thing too where you can download stuff really fast, so I guess it is legal or allowed. How do we find out about this stuff when we get there and how do we get it?

incidently…its VERY easy to burn cd’s from the music library…
could be usefuly if youre a classical or jazz fan…
dont think they have anything else though, really. I may be wrong.

and you didnt hear any of this from me.
wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more, say nore more…

what’s the advantage of using an online file transfer method like bittorrent to a file transfer program such as shareaza (free from adware, spyware)?

are u guys taking ure own pcs, or buying a laptop?

im thinking of converting my pc to a barebone one and buying a lcd monitor from there

hello again, Its been a like a week since I last posted and I am now fully graduated, woohoo.

Anyway, I hope the haven’t blocked torrent, but I imagine they probably have. ::Crosses fingers::

“what’s the advantage of using an online file transfer method like bittorrent to a file transfer program such as shareaza”
In general torrent is faster for larger files like movies and tv shows. Others are simpler for music and such.

I don’t know If I’m gonna get a laptop. I already have one, but it is a few years old and gigantic as far as carrying around goes.

I’m keeping my desktop, I’ve put a lot of energy and money into it so I’ll be bringing it with me, but not my 8 year old crt monitor, o no, I’m using my graduation personal fundraiser to buy myself a new 24" widescreen dell lcd which I will also double as a tv.

Does anyone know if McGill plans on joining the internet2 network, last time I checked only some 500 Universities in the U.S. had it, although I would think that with McGill’s high priority on research it would want to be part of this super fast network, which also got a few kids in trouble for sharing vast amounts of music and movies. =P

O yea and bittorent gets you entire albums in really good quality, rather than 128kb individual mp3’s

do you guys have any really good sites for torrent files?
