Purelife,
As a parent of a 1st year, my thoughts would be as follows:
Size of the campus both in terms of physical size and # of students could be considered either a negative or positive depending on what you are looking for. Only you can decide whether a small campus would be beneficial. From my outside position, I think it is easier to get involved on a smaller campus. Although UVA has so many opportunities that if you cant get into one thing, ie. student government, you may get involved in something else that you could like better.

2 The language requirement - In the arts and science program you have to take two years of a language. If you are not a language person, this could be an issue.

3 Housing - I don’t think there are great 2nd year housing options and you have decide your housing by October of 1st year. You don’t really have to decide by then but everyone starts talking about it by then and you definitely feel the pressure.

With all that being said, these are my opinions. My son really likes it there and I believe it was the right decision for him.
