Great thread! Appreciate the foreign production recommendations & making a list. We just started watching “Spiral” a French police procedural starring the actor who played Henri Leclair (Oo La La!) in Selfridges. It’s a bit graphic in scenes with cadavers and the subtitles can be problematic when the dialogue moves fast, but generally well acted.
Love the new Netfix feature that allows downloads to mobile devices so I have something to watch at the gym. Finally started watching Mad Men & really enjoy it. Anyone who thinks things were better in the 50s & 60s needs to watch to appreciate how we’ve progressed.
Also really enjoyed Happy Valley, British police drama.
Didn’t read the whole thread, but if you haven’t watched Master of None, watch that! So smart.
Just went back and looked … Can’t believe only one other person mentioned Master of None. The second season has only been out a few days, and I’ve already watched it twice and right now am listening to Aziz Ansari being interviewed on Fresh Air.
With school out and more time on my hands, I’ve started watching Escape to the Country. I can’t remember who recommended it upthread or on the Binge Watching thread, but I’m really enjoying it and appreciate the recommendation. It’s like a PBS version of House Hunters International. In fact, better than HHI in that they don’t create artificial conflict between the couple.
^'i mentioned escape to the country ( not sure if I was first ) but I mentioned how soothing it is to watch, it frustrates me that they don’t actually purchase a property but I enjoy touring the small English villages- glad you like
Has anyone mentioned Chewing Gum? Into the fourth show. Very funny British sitcom where the star, the writer, and the creator is Michaela Coel who is 29! She writes it by herself. She wrote her college senior play project Chewing Gum… this is based on that which apparently is based on her life story. I think it is a cross between the writers of Gilmore Girls (funny fast paced) and comedic acting of Robin Williams. It has already won BAFTA awards.
@iglooo, You download the Netflix app to your mobile device, select a show and the download option shows up as a little downward pointing arrow. They have some restrictions on the number of times you can download something, and once I got an “expired” notice midway through viewing an episode so I had to delete it and download it again. Not sure on the time limit, as I can usually pause an episode and resume viewing within a few days.
The same download options are becoming standard for subscription cable services (Dish Hopper etc.) so I think they are just trying to remain competitive. I haven’t paid to download any shows from iTunes in more than a year (except Game of Thrones), definitely a valuable feature.
@“Youdon’tsay” I think this thread is heavily into dramas, that’s why there’s been little “noise” about Master of None or Kimmy Schmidt…or even Bojack Horseman, another Netflix Original albeit one that takes a bit more getting used to. All three are originals which IMO makes them more notable recommendations for comedy than, say, Parks & Rec or Cheers.
I am finding Master of None hard to get into. I watched the first couple of minutes of a show called The Cable Girls and was completely turned off by the intro, which gave a ludicrously overblown description of the supposed horrors of being a woman in the 1920s. And believe me, I am a feminist. I turned it off
Darn it, @Consoulation, I was going to try The Cable Girls myself this summer. Other shows on my list: The Crown, Offspring (Australian), Grace and Frankie’s latest season, and 13 Reasons Why (which my D recommends and I’ve watched the first two episodes so far). Anything else anyone can recommend that fits in with these – i.e. drama, not too violent or weird?
I just finished the first 10 episodes of 13 Reasons Why (which unlike @Barbalot, my D told me would be a waste of time and it was stupid and unrealistic lol). The first couple were engaging and the last two are keeping me hooked but I had decided not to continue watching until last night when I found myself on the couch exhausted and much needed the boob tube for mindless, simplistic relaxation and it did the trick. I don’t want to sound insensitive to the bullying issue, but wow, the whole premise makes you believe teens today have no resiliency or backbone. I believe there are four more episodes and I intend to watch them when the mood strikes.
