Personally I think it’s worth waiting until Monday to find out if the school updates the GPA. My daughter was deferred at at different school and she will wait to submit new information until her GPA is updated since it will be better. I have no idea if there is a rush to do this or not though.
We have until 2/15. It doesn’t appear to me that there’s any rush. They just have to amend a file they’ve already reviewed.
My daughter was also deferred and we will be going through these steps as well, our semester just ended and I expect we will probably be submitting her updated transcript right around 2/15.
NC State gives very little merit. They have a page open where you can apply for scholarships once accepted, but they do not just give merit right off the top like other southern state schools. Mine was accepted last year to the honors college and got no automatic merit, FWIW. She ended up at UNC, so we don’t know how scholarships would have panned out, but we certainly didn’t expect any.
We have the unofficial transcript from 1Q that we had to get to apply for a scholarship. The 2Q grades won’t be finalized for a while and won’t have a new GPA and they freeze PowerSchool so can’t see the GPA. Do we submit just the 1Q or better to wait for 2Q as well. Guess we could screenshot now but won’t have the updated GPA and not all grades are in yet (quarter just ended). Any advice?
Does anyone know if the deferrals are due to high volume which means if you fill out the LOCI form (assuming not everyone will do that) and update the grades, chances are higher for admittance ?
I know we have until Feb 15, but won’t they already have been reviewing RD for a month prior either as they were due by Jan 15? Just a thought. I’m not even sure PowerSchool will adjust the gps after Tuesdays reports card. Tis that slow.
We all have a lot to figure out. Add it to our lists.
thanks for the info
I have a feeling there were extra deferrals given the mass increase of applicants. Unless they have a deferral cap amount each year that’s the same. That is possible? Idk.
I was told elsewhere that this year there was record breaking applicants (more than the other unc system schools). I could see it being believable, but you never know what you are being told is fact and not embellished.
I know a large majority of kids apply to tons of schools they have little to no intention of attending. They just do it for ego and brag. That bothers me because it takes up a spot for someone that it’s their first choice. I’d hopeeeee they wouldn’t accept the deferral. But, ego is ego. If they do the right thing, it will help weed it down. Not sure if it’s enough though. We are really nervous. My child isn’t talking much. He cried last night alone in his room and he never cries. There’s so much pressure on the kids to be perfect. Being told 4.1-2 is poor is not right. They are often the more successful ones… I’d argue. There’s a lot at stake here. A lot at risk for us if this doesn’t work. Like many families I’m sure.
totally agree and giving too many acceptance for the kids who are not planning to attend demotivate the kids who got deferred. UNC system has to be centralized to solve this issue or force it like ED acceptance.
State students, alumni and fans have never been accused of not having pride that is for sure. I’m biased but I think we have more of a hardcore fan base than the two blues. One reason are the rankings. We do have somewhat of a chip on our shoulder because of that.
I will say, the thought has crossed my mind, that I almost wish it was a deny. Hear me out. Because it’s his first choice and most affordable because we live here, we feel compelled to see this through. However, the fear is there after seeing all these 4.2-4.4s and good test scores that were deferred from various majors, is that he won’t be competitive still. Then we lost scholarship time because the vast majority don’t fit each child and they want you to have enrolled in a college to apply. Also, as mentioned before in earlier posts, I worry about housing at UNCG since it’s not automatic. You apply. Says if you pay the deposit in time, it’s guaranteed. Well is it for sure though? What if they get higher enrollments than usual? We would be screwed with no back up if we accept there and he has no bed. He has no car… Even if one fell in our laps, he gets his license in June, but he’s not a confident driver enough to drive and hour to my mil’s and 2x a day. He needs to be on campus. If we found a walking distance apt that was adorable that late in the game, there would be a lease. It would need to be renewed before he would know if his transfer was accepted.
This stuff I’m talking about above… why it angers me when kids apply to schools they know they really aren’t going to. Personally, I’ve never understood applying to more than 3-5 schools. I don’t understand the 10-20. My kid and thousands more, not accepted because of ego. I know there are ways to tell who’s more serious. Things like location, does a parent work there, did parents go there, is a sibling attending. Etc. Also, gpa can often mean squat.
Those students aren’t taking up a spot. It’s tricky…top students may want to go to a “better” school, but what if they don’t get in? Mine didn’t have NCSU or UNCW as top choices, but applied in case they didn’t get in to UNC. Or, in case they got a huge scholarship from another school. I don’t think it’s always bragging rights, and NCSU has down the yield formula to know who to accept and how many they accept will actually attend, so kids applying who likely won’t go is factored into the acceptance formula. So, once again, those students are not taking up a spot.
Once again, admissions has formulas of how many to accept versus how many will actually attend, so those students are not taking up your child’s spot. Also, top students often apply to more places because the chance of getting in decreases at these top schools, so you can’t just apply to 3. Finances also plays a part. Many of the students need to see where tehy get the most money before deciding. This isn’t about ego for most.
Mmm I disagree to a point though…and I didn’t come up with this theory alone. Also I’m not just talking about NC schools. I mean in general. The “formula” can often miss or I should say, over/undershoot.
I somewhat agree with the “why apply to more than 3-5 schools?” statement but on the other hand, there is also so much randomness in the admission process that even with good GPA/Rank/SAT scores, one cannot be certain and hence, parents/students get stressed out and want to be sure that they are not in the open if they cannot get into their top choices
This conversation regarding number of schools is a good one. I believe it comes down to preference. Some believe more is better for various reasons, others fewer. This go round my student had 5 schools total. They were able to focus exclusively on these. The safety, a target, two more uncertain targets and a reach. Full transparency there should be more safeties since TO was a bit of a wild card but this student was only interested in these schools. The outcome currently is three accepts and a deferral.
I’m truly pulling for you, but my son is an example of someone who went far away out of state to a school with no previous ties (CA resident to Clemson). 4.5W GPA did not get any University of CA acceptances - they are test blind. Good ECs and good essays. Every state is experiencing this, and OOS reach, target, and safety schools are necessary. Nothing is a given-
Yes, and it also depends if the parents themselves ever went through this process themselves. For example, both I and my spouse went to college overseas and hence, we had zero experience with the US college application process. So we were really not sure what a good number of applications was. We ended up with 5 in-state and 6 out-of-state applications for my son.
Best of luck to everyone
All this sounds horribly and overly expensive.
Totally agree. One was a free application. But as I indicated earlier, zero prior experience with the US application system. In our case, we just took one college entrance exam, and that was it. No need for essays, EC’s, leadership BS etc
