Following up on my question. VT Admissions responded to me quickly that the SRAR is due by 12/20 for EA
I recieved an email after completing the guest account and it said to wait for 7 days from the day i recieved the email for VT to find or link my srar to my application. Still havent gotten any updates. Applied as a transfer for fall 2019 into college of science
Early Decision Results are in!!
@hokiepls Do you see that they’ve received SRAR on your guest account now? If not contact them email/phone - they’re very good about responding.
We didn’t do ED and so waiting to hear. The ‘invited’ language in the bottom of the page disappeared. Anyone else?
I have a question. Does VT consider the strength/ranking of a particular HS, when they look at GPA or class rank? My son graduates from one of the top public schools in the state, with a bunch of overachievers as his classmates. His GPA is 3.7 or so, and he is probably ranked in the middle of his class (this HS doesn’t rank). I am sure if he went to different, much less competitive school just 5 miles away, he would have a much easier time and GPA over 4. So, is he at a disadvantage now? His SAT is 1330 (690 math), and with few AP’s under his belt he is not a dumb kid by any measure. Varsity soccer captain.
Related question - does VT have a quota per high school? If yes, than he can probably forget it…
@genesmasher Are you in-state VA? Is this a high school that VT should be familiar with? If not, then it probably doesn’t matter and a 3.7 is a 3.7…unfortunately.
Like STEM2017 said if you are in-state then the VT admissions will be familiar with your school. If out of state, what I have heard from other schools is that GPA is meaningless without content. They will look at the courses taken and how you did in the courses. I know student’s who never took an advanced or AP class and have a 4.2 GPA but others who have taken 8 AP classes and have a 4.2. At the same time a higher SAT would have helped because it would have shown that the school is very competitive and hard to get a high GPA but your score would show more of your potential. Good luck
in the process
Just saw from a previous post that you are out of state and applying for engineering. If your son did well on Calculus, Physics and Chemistry that will help but his SAT may be low for out of state but you never know.
Hello @genesmasher ,
High school context is taken into consideration. We are concerned with the grades earned and the level of rigor of course work vs the GPA.
Also, there are no quotas of any type. This is a popular and false rumor that continues to circulate in certain areas.

Thanks for everyone’s responses. He goes to Canyon Crest Academy, San Diego - currently ranked #1 public HS in California by Niche. As we discovered over the last four years, many teachers at this school adopted an approach “students are supposed to teach everything themselves, but will be tested as if there were actually taught in class”. As is the case in many affluent neighborhoods in CA, 70-80% of student body are children of highly-educated immigrants from Indopacific region that stop at literally nothing to make sure their kid gets into a top college. Not to sound racist (many of my friends are among them), just stating the fact. It is a brutal environment though -several kids actually tried to commit suicide just this school year, because of too much pressure and unpredictability. I know my son’s grades could be higher elsewhere, and given the choice again, we would absolutely take him to a different school. But alas, it’s too late now.
Anyway, I just hope that VT admission considers stuff like this, when they look at his app. His SAT good enough for admission, as far as I understand. Great to hear that there are no quotas at least…
@genesmasher Did your son apply for engineering?
@VTAdmissions I just got an email from the Engineering department about stage 2 of the Davenport Scholarship application. How many students are typically awarded this scholarship per year?
@VTAdmissions Does it mean anything specific to get an email from VT with the one-question survey regarding engineering? Thanks.
@NorTexApps Good question. Today we sent out an email asking engineering applicants if they may have an idea on a specific major of interest in the future. As per the message we are doing this to better assist in future planning for resources and the needs of the College of Engineering.
@hunchojack Yes. He is only interested in Civil engineering. VT is his dream school.
Did all engineering applicants receive the email asking about the interest in a specific major?
@Gatsb13 Take a look at recent posts in this thread to answer your question from the other thread.
@VTAdmissions is this just for planning purposes or it is going to be “tie-breaker” for borderline candidates. Why would you not have this question after a month when admission decisions are out if it is just for faculty and resource planning.
Some majors are popular over the others and some students are truly undecided, but inclined or confused between two majors.
What is the impact on admission decision for student not responding to it?
I think the application process should be transparent as compared to other colleges.
Some colleges say upfront that students are admitted based on their major choice and some like VT maintain that students are admitted to General Engineering and can decide after a year.
Why is this change in position?
This is not a change in position; this survey is one data point to assist the university in future planning. We hope to get as high of a response rate as possible. Our review process remains the same. If students are unsure there is a “not sure at this time option.”
@VTAdmissions
When will regular decision applicantsbd notified of their decision?
