NYU Spring Transfer 2020

Midterm report is required, have you checked the website for transfer application?

@oscuro I think Tandon got competitive recently due to the merge in 2014 with NYU. When I called the admission 3 days ago, they were telling me that Tandon will give out decisions either this Friday or next Friday. FYI, I applied for the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering program. Maybe that’s why I heard back earlier, compared to other programs.

@yzw The midterm report is required for sure unless you are currently in your gap semester/gap year like me. I got waived for the college mid-term report. Before applying to NYU, I carried up to 73 credits.

@meo123

I also applied to biomolecular science and have yet to hear anything. would you mind sharing your like stats or like what you wrote about? im a little confused as to what they look at because my grades are not bad at all and i have not getting a response

Just curious, is it easier to get accepted as spring transfer or fall transfer? Or the chances are pretty much the same?

For everyone that got accepted, what are you guys doing about housing starting in the spring?

@oscuro High school GPA: 3.9 (public high school), salutatorian. Finalist for Intel International Science Fair and Engineering(It is a fairly huge competition in the world if you want to know more).

SAT: 1280 (720 math, 560 English), SAT 1 math 760
College GPA: 3.6 freshman year. Then my GPA dropped to 2.9 in the fall of my sophomore year due to personal circumstances. I was able to bring my overall GPA back to 3.3
I have taken various courses (Gen chem I and II, genetics, molecules and cells, orgo I and II, stats, cal I and II, bio lab, ecology evolution). My college is one of the top 30 in the countries.

Recs: English + Biology + Theatre professors, and a senior scientist (my science mentor for the past 5 years and worked with me for the science project, which got me to the Intel ISEF). They all know me very well.

Activities: I founded the first robotics team at my high school and participated in many international service trips. I have been a research intern for the same pharmaceuticals (along with my mentor) for 4 years. I have also worked as a biotech research intern for a biotech startup in Boston.

Essay: I show a clear interest in my career because I know which engineering is like. I also told them how my gap semester has helped me mentally and let me determine my actual passion for applied science.

I think having great stats can allow you to go really far. I just didn’t have any great stats but my personal stories and experiences are big part of my application.

@transferr2020 All the same tbh. It is already hard to get into any schools so it is just harder to transfer in, regardless of the terms.

@meo123 Thanks for your insight, that’s what I think too. I think the transfer admission is getting more and more competitive every year.

By the way, does high school grade matter when applying as junior transfer?

@transferr2020 nope lol. The school doesn’t even care that I forgot to submit my hs transcript. I went to a high school in Brunei.

@meo123 Lol, then I assume SAT doesn’t even matter then? Since they don’t even require it for junior transfers. But are they going to look at your freshman application when applying as transfer?

@transferr2020 My SAT got waived but I self-reported my score on CommonApp. Honestly, it has been 4.5 years since high school, I don’t even think that any colleges care or put weight on high school performance.

@meo123 Yea, that make sense, and given the fact that students can change a lot during college. It makes sense that they put little to no emphasis on student’s high school transcripts, especially for junior transfers.

Does anyone know if we have housing or we still have to apply for it? I have no idea how this works, if anyone could help

@qlaueen you need to apply, but you are guaranteed housing if you need it. Scroll down to the new transfer students section here https://www.nyu.edu/students/student-information-and-resources/housing-and-dining/on-campus-living/application-and-assignments/applying-for-housing.html

I applied to Gallatin! Still haven’t heard anything. So far it seems like only decisions have only been made for CAS applicants. Am I right?

@purple229 A bunch of Gallatin acceptances went out Friday, check out the previous pages.

Hey guys. Just wanted to give me two cents here.

I was accepted to CAS Philosophy on 12/6. The changes in my application portal are as follows: around 12pm my checklist disappeared, around 2pm when you click on the admissions decision bar on Albert, I was able to accept/decline my offer, and at 4:05pm I got the email saying there was a decision update which was my official letter.

After I got admitted, I looked over my application to see what stuck out, and from doing a lot of research about NYU and trying to get a sense of the school - I truly think NYU takes a wholistic approach and wants to get to know you as a whole person. I don’t think the highest GPA and stats is not what they’re looking for (now of course that doesn’t mean it hurts), but just from reading this thread we can see how accomplished everyone is - but I think NYU just wants to see that you’re passionate about something and you’ve done something to show that in the best way you can. I also think NYU is looking for someone who has demonstrated independence and maturity since I think those things are key to going to school in such a unique location and environment.

Those who haven’t started non-profits or did win an international award, don’t be discouraged! And if you have, then hats off to you. The point is that I think NYU can see how bad you want to be there from what you’ve done.

**And I didn’t believe this before - but we all truly DO end up where we belong (after many failures and having things not working out).

I have a few tips for future applicants:

  • Make sure all your documents are submitted as early as possible (things that aren’t in your immediate control like: transcripts, high school grades, college report, etc.)
  • Submitting your app early, doesn’t really do much in my experience - just submit before the deadline.
  • Work on your drafts of your essays, and edit edit edit. Have 2-3 people read it.

-***Submit your midterm report if you’re doing well (I think that this truly helped me in my application process - I had all A’s this semester - fun fact: I did that after reading someone who wrote about it on CC so thank you!) - and submit it EVEN if they didn’t ask for it (they didn’t ask me).

****Lastly - a quick tip for the overall app and essays: I think the best thing to convey to NYU is to tell them WHY it would make SENSE for you to transfer there. That’s something I tried to put in the forefront.

Good luck to everyone waiting for results! We all know how terrible and anxiety-producing the wait is. But again, we do all end up where we belong.
