One-Year Update from a CWRU Parent (Still Impressed, With a Few Realities)

I posted earlier this year about our initial impressions, and now that my student is wrapping up their first year, I wanted to share an update for those following along.

Overall: still very impressed—but now with a fuller, more nuanced perspective.
Academics – mostly strong, with one “just okay” experience
One class fell into the “fine, but not great” category. The teaching itself was good, but my student was frustrated that homework wasn’t graded and returned before the first test. It made it harder to gauge whether they were really on track. Not a disaster, but a good reminder that not every class will be perfectly structured.
Humanities breadth – unexpectedly amazing
A real highlight was a humanities breadth requirement that went far beyond a typical classroom experience. Classes sometimes met at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Kelvin Smith Library, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland.
At these sessions, students got behind-the-scenes access—seeing (and sometimes even handling) pieces from educational collections. There was a lot of writing (not my student’s favorite), but the professor was deeply invested in both the material and each student’s success. It ended up being one of those classes that stretches you in ways you don’t expect.
Second semester = noticeable step up in rigor
Second semester classes were clearly more demanding. There were nights my student spent hours on a single problem. It felt like a real shift from adjustment mode to true academic rigor—but also where deeper learning started to click.

Campus life – still overflowing with opportunities
Therapy dogs in the library during stressful times
Themed dinners and campus events
Theater performances
Access to a world-class symphony

Socially, my student found good friends and will be in a 6 person suite next year with several of them. Most second year housing is 6 person suites (individual rooms with 6 rooms sharing a common space and bathroom) with campus environmental services cleaning rhe bathroom 3 times a week.

Bottom line after Year 1:
CWRU continues to feel like a place that is both academically serious and deeply supportive. It’s not effortless—students are challenged—but there’s a clear infrastructure to help them grow and succeed.
Happy to answer any questions as other families are making decisions or looking ahead!
