Parents of the HS Class of 2012 - Original

What is your wife for, jmnva06? Or against?

The cool part of my morning was getting in my BF’s car and finding that the last driver had left the Beastie Boys in the CD player. Drive time score!

What is the topic being considered?

Graduation announcements arrived yesterday. I’m going to get most of them sent out today (didn’t order many–his grandmothers, my/H’s aunts and uncles, my sibs, a couple of friends from where we used to live in NC). I’ve been poking around the registrar’s site looking at distribution requirements etc. He doesn’t register until he gets there in August. So far would like to take whatever calculus he places into, the physics sequence for potential majors, intro to poli sci or philosophy, a first year seminar in either history or art history. And depending on which math he takes–might try to squeeze in a half credit engineering course. He’s very excited!

Now all he has to do is finish up high school. LOL Has an English presentation today (they were supposed to put together proposals for a high school they designed with justification for curriculum etc.) and also a chem presentation (the science behind ice cream complete with a batch of French vanilla that he whipped up last night!). And tomorrow is a pitch for a play he thinks the drama club should put on next fall (for IB Theatre Arts). Lots of busy work/fun projects post-IB/AP. Since he has no finals, he’s done next Tuesday and then has 10 days until graduation. Off to Flickr to see the new pictures!

Okay, when I signed up for the one month free Amazon Prime, I didn’t read about only Amazon being the shipper - I will be more careful and warn D of this. Thanks guys!!!

DW is testifying on improper payments in the Medicare/Medicaid system.

I’m not sure that there is anyone in favor of improper payments.

Her testimony was about the work her agency has done in this area.

Ok, I have a beef! Last night, two of my neighbors showed up on my doorstep with a flyer saying they are hosting a neighborhood cul de sac party on our cul de sac. They said it will be in front of my house (I live at the top end of the cul de sac). My issue is that this is at the same time I am hosting my S graduation party!! They didn’t even bother to ask beforehand–they just told us. Never in the 5 years that we have lived here has there been an issue with access to our home and on the one day I am hosting an important party, this is going on. Sheesh. I sent them an email saying we would not be participating and are concerned about access to our home on that special day for our guests.

Can’t you tell them it would be better if the party were in front of one of their houses?

@momsings. Gee that’s inconsiderate of them. I hope they realize you’re going to have guests parked in front of your house which doesn’t really make the neighborhood party work in that location!

momsings - don’t they need some sort of permit to restrict access to someone’s road/house? At the very least wouldn’t they need to inform the fire department or emergency vehicles just in case of an emergency? You don’t want to create enemies but you might want to look into that, it’s not a private party afterall so there must be some restrictions or requirements.

Momsings: I totally agree with you! What a PITA!

Can you block off the parking that you’ll need so that the block partyers don’t make themselves comfortable there?

Worst case, I suppose your guests could always run over a couple of the neighbors to make a point. ;)

On any other given day this would be a non-issue. There are 2 houses located at the tip of the cul de sac (one of which is mine). Their houses and driveways sit next to ours one across the other. I think what I will tell them is that it is fine for people to mingle in the street but that I would appreciate if they kept the bbq and food table on one of their driveways.

momsings, I agree with atmc. In our area, one needs to get a permit to have a block party. I would call your local town/city hall to ask what your rights are.

They were just discussing the graduation cheering issue on The View. Seems that it may be a cultural difference, as others have noted. Either way, arresting the “offenders” is over the top regardless.

This was my first email to them: “I wanted to touch base with you about the party in the cul de sac. I cannot change the date of my son’s graduation party. It is a joint celebration for S and his best friend since kindergarten. I don’t think I will be able to contribute to the cul de sac party. I am wondering about access to my home that day. Our party is an open house from 3–8. Will our guests be able to get to my house?
I think the neighborhood party is a wonderful idea and would love to be in on the planning if there is a next time.”

This was my second email (you can tell I am getting more and more irritated about it all :D)
Also, I would just ask that tables and such not be set up in front of our driveway or in the middle of the street so that our house is somewhat accessible to our party guests. I don’t mind people mingling out there though. There may be people attending our party who cannot walk up the hill (elder folks). I am sorry about these requests. On any other day this wouldn’t be an issue, but I do think S’s graduation party is special, and I never would have dreamed there would be access issues based on living here for the last 5 years. Thanks, momsings

momsings: I would second (or third?) what amtc said about the permits; I would ask your neighbors point-blank about what official arrangements they’ve made. I’m pretty chill, generally, but if I were in your shoes, I’d be very concerned about guest parking, what with people mingling in the street and all. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this!

momsings - my face would have spoken a gazillion ****ed off words upon the neighbor ringing the doorbell and presenting such a flyer! I am not good at hiding my emotions!!! I would have ended up hashing it out right then, but sounds like your way will keep the neighborhood peace much better!

Good Luck - I wish you great grad party outcome!

Epic fail in faxing.

I cannot for the life of my figure out how to make a fax go through to health services (to send them the big packet of doctor forms). That’s ok. I can mail the thing and pick up some cool stamps at the same time for announcements (I have a stash of OLD stamps so everything gets mailed with very old Christmas stamps $.34 or $.37 ones haha and very small denomination stamps to make up the difference).

maidenMom–I think I was in shock when they came by.

I do think it is awesome that they want to community build; I am just simply stunned that they didn’t check with me beforehand.

momsings: Is there any chance that the neighbors are upset that you are having a party that they weren’t invited to? Is this some form of passive-aggressive behavior on their parts?

On the other hand, is it too late/too involved to include the neighbors and therefore not have competing parties?

We had a block party last year and the city had to sanction and give the barriers to block the street. You could park all your cars on the curb at the bottom of your drive to be sure that it’s clear or yeard waste bins? We have a giant recycle, 3 huge yard waste and a garbage toter that would hold wuite a few parking spaces - I’m thinking that in your area you might have a similar representation.

911–No, they didn’t know about the grad party because having parties has never been an issue. I was going to let them know the week before so they could anticipate the parking. That is what all of us usually do out of courtesy. I am sure they wouldn’t have planned it if they had known. It is just so weird that they planned a party in front of my house without checking!
