We’re off for another couple of overnights. I hope that brings some clarity. D is leaning towards the school that has offered her the most $$ of the final 5. DH and I are of course happy with that but we want to make sure she is happy with the decision. Not too much longer now!
D has a couple of good friends who are very unhappy with their options. So no matter what, she feels very thankful for her options. And I am so happy that she is happy with her outcome.
It is good to know that overall, you would be happy with any of the options.
It’s amazing to me how many of DS’s friends parents are now wondering how to get out of having options that are less than optimal. I tried to tell these parents months ago that many public colleges & universities, particularly those in California, will not give much financial aid to OOS students, but they wouldn’t listen. So now kids have a choice between Ginormous IN-State, with good $$, or OOS publics with little aid. Quite predictable. My DS feels kind of bad that he’s the one of his immediate group that is in at his #1 choice with a doable FA package. It’s because SOMEONE did the research! That someone would like to thank this forum and CC in general for much of that insight!

Is it true that it is mostly moms who are doing all this college research stuff? I know we have men here too and very active - I may add! But in general, is it your experience that it is more women who are doing all this legwork? I am curious… My anecdotal evidence says so! So, wondering what you all think…

H is completely out of the picture on this one - not by our choice - perhaps he is in denial over S leaving? He’s refused to have discussions, look at the pictures and videos we’ve taken on college tours and excuses himself when the topic arises with others. It looks like he is planning to weigh in at the nth hour and upset all our careful planning!

The mom (me) is the designated researcher for all things requiring any sort of research. I am also the Calendar Queen, so, basically, I know everything, whether they admit it or not.

@loganator: me too! DH does take an interest to a certain point and was more than willing to go on college visits if work permitted, but I’ve done all the research, financials, etc.
I actually have no idea whether D1’s mother has done any college research at all or not. From the (occasional) responses I get to emails, I strongly suspect “not.”
Adding to our growing list!! D decided to take the no-so-subtle road signs pointing to FSU (Full OOS tuition waiver, merit scholarship, music scholarship, and acceptance into the special music living-learning community dorm).

DW is not the planner/researcher in this family. She’s perfectly content delegating that to me. She’s very much not the techie or internet savvy at all. She enjoys the physical trips and conversations, but not the research or follow on paperwork. And she can’t stand deadlines… :> Not a good combination for this sort of thing.
@scholarme - Thanks for setting up the parent preparedness page! It prompted me to make hotel reservations tonight! I also did not know of the Bed, Bath, and Beyond program. Good stuff!
On a separate note – I had an awesome surprise today. Apparently I have an old college savings account that tracked me down. That was a nice surprise!
DS and DH are at granddad’s house waiting for admitted student days at SS-LAC tomorrow and Friday. No hotel room or rental car needed for college visits! Remind me of how much money we’re saving as I write the tuition checks, please.
As for the question about which parent is organized. All of that has fallen to me for all eternity. DH has had strong opinions about what DS should look for n a college and which colleges he should look at, but the actual work was all done by yours truly. Now H gets to reap the benefit as he gets to go to admitted student days and I do not (it’s his family that lives nearby after all).

My only advice on parent preparedness: Don’t do this.
