@4kids2graduate I have resorted to online shopping for S19’s pants. I can never find his size at the store in a color and fit that he is willing to wear. So, I know his size and what styles he likes and then order them from whatever store is having a sale. I don’t even bother to go to the stores to look anymore. I have probably used Macy’s the most.
@krnBoston How did move in go emotionally? Did he settle in well?
@carolinamom2boys I’m jealous! I wanna meet you guys! :((
@4kids2graduate In addition to the stores already suggested, check out Uniqlo and J. Crew (online).
Uniqlo will hem in store for free - most jeans and pants come in W28 or W29 with a 32" or 34" length. We took advantage of the free helming for the 1st time this week. The pants were ready the next day.
Lurker alert. Love reading all your posts and have a hint for those that still have to move in. We moved in and had several items that did not work. For example a desk lamp, that was supposed to clip to the desk; the desk did not have a shelf or lip to use the clip. A few other things as well. Wish I had my Target and BBB receipts so that I could have returned them. Also wish I had brought my BBB coupons so I could have used them for replacements. Good luck to you all! We are headed to a rooftop to celebrate and drown our sorrows away.
So we are 5 days from leaving and 6 from moving S in. He finally got his schedule straightened out yesterday. Last night he went to a sleepover with some friends (2 are leaving on Friday) and he went to work from there. I came home to find the Olympics on and S asleep in front of the TV. I guess he had a late night. That does not bode well for more packing and cleaning (which he really needs to do). I sense a lot of scrambling at the end of the week and not much sleep on Friday night. {sigh} Trying hard to stay upbeat but I’m struggling with sending my youngest off.
H and S and I are on an outing to find a jacket that will work for rain. S’s only jackets are hoodies and a winterish cloth coat with warm lining. I’ll get him a Northface or Columbia coat at Thanksgiving. This will be unexpected fun- S greeted me when I got home from work with “Do you want to do something?”
Moved D in on Saturday morning - she had to check in for Band Camp first, then could move in. Even though we were one of the first in line, she ended up only having a couple of hours to unpack and put things away before lunch, because there was an issue with her rented trumpet locker (still unresolved, but hopefully she’ll remember to resolve it this week. Basically trumpet case would not fit in the locker!)
So we hurriedly helped her unpack, got her bed made, put her hangers in closet, then H and I left for the day. We spent the night in town, and picked up a few last minute things for her at the local Target (for one thing, I discovered the day before leaving that ALL of her causal socks were threadbare or had holes, so I threw them all away - she actually wanted to keep them, smh! - so she needed all new socks). so I bought socks, and we bought her a full-length mirror with click-tape for the closet door. We wanted to see the room first before bringing a mirror from home, to make sure there was room somewhere for one.
So we said our goodbyes Sunday right before lunch, then H and I drove home yesterday evening (Sunday).
I heard from her this afternoon - her new roommate moved in early, too. She’s from Ontario, Canada, and plays tennis well enough she got a scholarship. All I know for now. She actually texted D last week and introduced herself. Unfortunately, D had only a few minutes today to hang up her band uniform and get back to band camp, so she only had time to say Hi.
D will be at band camp from 9 am to 9 pm most of this week except Friday, so I’m hoping they get a moment to get to know each other a bit before classes start…
Right now, the house feels a little lonelier and quieter, but I’m also enjoying the peace and quiet, and not having to run her anywhere! Or wake her up! Of course, she had no problem getting up for band this morning, it’s just at home she doesn’t want to get up…
Btw, her dorm room is smaller than we guesstimated - only 11 by 14 ft. For two people. The closet is a nice size though. Thankfully, D packed light and did not have to loft her bed too high, but still has plenty of room underneath for under-the-bed boxes and her laundry basket. She ended up putting the short dresser in her closet and still had plenty of room for hanging things.
Whew. Took all week to gather her stuff, but like I said, took just over an hour to unpack…
@psychmomma I got my son a Columbia raincoat at Cabelas . They recommended sealed seams and a covered placket.
I received an email from CofC with the following suggestion to bring an tension mount shower rod to place in the closet to provide additional hanging space.
Still looking for a rain coat. We are going to the LL Bean store tomorrow. Today was emotional as well. As far as soiling the nest goes, I do know that my sister and I have been at each other more the past couple weeks. I think we are recognizing we are going to be apart for the first long period of time in our lives. We may not be acting like it but we will miss each other.
I’m not sure how to get on their mailing list, @psychmomma , but I couldn’t find my BBB coupon and told an employee that I’d misplaced it and that we were shopping for college. They gave us 20% off everything…and then I found the coupon at home and was able to use it on another visit! You can also use the BBB coupons at Harmon.
Just found out DS16 got AP Scholar with Distinction.
@carolinamom2boys Yay! I guess- I mean he’s already in at college (and starting soon) but it shows he worked hard in high school and did well on AP exams which isn’t always easy
He’s going in with 39 credits as a
Sophomore .
Super impressive @carolinamom2boys I’m going in with 14 and I thought that was high!
Congrats to your DS @carolinamom2boys ! Did they notify you or did you have to check the website?
Try j crew factory on line for skinny sizes and good prices.
@Cheeringsection He received an email that notified him that he would be receiving a certificate in the mail.
Busy packing both Ds up for college but wanted to check in with two quick thoughts. I really needed 2 of those BBB 20% off everything coupons. One came mysteriously in the mail and I managed to snag another on ebay for $5. I will definitely get my money back and then some. I need one coupon for each city!
Second, I read somewhere that the best way to pack the bedding stuff is in a big black trash bag in reverse order. So that the first thing you pull out is what you need to put on first. Items should go into the bag as comforter first, blanket, sheets, mattress pad cover, mattress foam pad thingy, bed bug proof mattress cover. And a good friend recommended NOT making the bed first (which I would totally have done) because you will need somewhere to set things while you unpack and on top of the clean made up bed might not be the best plan.
Just my 2 cents! We load everything up Wed. and head for first one and then the next!!
@madredos Best of luck with both move in’s! I think deep down my mom is glad she doesn’t have to deal with 2 this year as my sister is commuting to a community college. But she plans on living in an apartment close to campus next year.
@readingclaygirl - I am sure your mom is happy. I have a good friend with twins and one is staying home. She couldnt be happier. I think for us twin moms, it is fun to be able to spend quality time with just one. Just as I am sure your parents will enjoy having the time with you, moving you in.
