Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Hi all so much happening in the last day or so. So I want to catch up. Congrats to all who have gotten acceptances scholarships etc. Hang in there for those deferred - u r still very much in the game I will keep my fingers crossed! Condolences for your loss @mysonsdad. I too am a big believer in karma so in the end it all evens out. And finally I agree TGIF!

Wow! Lots of posts to catch up on!

Congratulations to everyone who got good news, hugs and ice cream to the kids who got not-so-good news, and drinks on the lanai for all the adults. (It’s always 5 o’clock here.)

Last night was S’s winter concert- the last time I’ll see him onstage with a Santa hat perched on his head (or on his instrument, in the case of orchestra and his upright bass, whom he has named ā€œLindaā€). Definitely bittersweet, and made only slightly easier by a really appalling rendition of Carol of the Bells, which has to be my least favorite Christmas carol ever.

D and I had a long chat about priorities and what she wants out of life and what she’d like the next two years to look like. After repeated insistence that ā€œthere are no wrong answersā€ and ā€œit’s not me, what is it you want?ā€ I finally got her to verbalize a plan and a backup plan. So we’re not where I expected to be, but in a spot that works (I think/hope) much better for her.

And S is waiting for two EAs, and then a bunch of schools who won’t notify until March/April. The suspense may kill us both. (And then there’s his best friend, who got results from a school three days ago, but hasn’t bothered to check yet.)
Talk about ā€œrun your own raceā€!

We’re still waiting for official notification from a school with automatic tuition +room for NMSF. CB has been slow sending his SAT scores (after failing to send them to the same school free right after he took it). One thing about applying to only two schools is that there’s not as much to wait for.

We’re going to the beach for five days right after Christmas, as we have the last 5 years. Hopefully everyone will get good news on the admissions front soon.

Results of my DD’s ED app come out this afternoon. Although she is well-qualified and would succeed there, I know that she most likely (almost certainly?) will not get in (single digit admit rate, etc.). My mantra today is, ā€œShe won’t get in and everything will be okay.ā€

D is still waiting for her first decision. Two, maybe 3 of them should come next week. The wait may kill me. I picked her up from her EC last night and on the way home in the car, she let out a gasp while checking her phone and told me that one of her acquaintances had been accepted EA to Harvard. She has family members who have gone to HYPSM, and a cousin who has applied to the Ivy League, so she is really feeling the pressure. At least she has school to keep her mind off it. I just cruise CC half the day to see if anyone knows when one of her EA schools will be releasing results.

Me too! On the upside, I think I’m way better at keeping things low key with my son now that I can channel my anxiety into CC!

Typing quickly before work.

@EastGrad – Again, Wow. Just fantastic. Congrats to her.

@palm715 – Great to have that one in the bank. Excellent alternative, if it comes to that. That said, a bit different locale than Hawaii!!

@crowlady – Ugh. As you noted, we’ve been there. Longer note or PM to follow when time allows

To everyone who’s sent ā€˜good luck’ notes, thanks.

For those whose kids have acceptances I’d strongly encourage you to post info on the school’s CC ā€˜Decisions Thread’. That stuff is very helpful to succeeding classes.

Gotta go.

@petrichor11 - I actually like ā€œCarol of the Bellsā€ which is a good thing because somehow all my kids are performing it this year. Unfortunately, although each has learned what would be a different part, our family talent doesn’t lend to choral performance/blending, so we couldn’t sing it with one another. (I’m Jewish but my parents forbade Christmas carols with such vim that I’m rebelling a bit.)

My DS hasn’t heard yet (Princeton hasn’t released their decisions) but many of his friends and my students have heard. One good news from Cornell, but the rest of the kids, wonderful wonderful kids, have been deferred. It’s demoralizing.

Thank you, everyone, for your enthusiasm and kind congratulations.

@Bouders and @CAMidwestMom, here is a link to some schools’ release dates:

@palm715 carbs and puppy love can do wonders. Good things are in store for her.

@sseamom and @cheeringsection it’s Friday. Here’s hoping for some well deserved down time this weekend!

@eastgrad and anyone I inadvertently missed … Congratulations!

@crowlady I hope burning the midnight oil was fruitful for your S. I’m pretty sure my D was up late (early)? Last night was senior skate night and then loads of homework to catch up on. @themommymommy I guess there was a lot of late night studying going around.

Good luck to all waiting on decisions.

@dyiu13 were are staying home. D is signed up for various volunteer shifts at the museum and still has a couple of college apps to finish (and now a winter break assignment). This is the first year that I have two kids in two different school districts with two different breaks (one has 2 weeks, the other three). Spring break is completely different.

@dyiu13 @sseamom @arisamp @EastGrad Congrats!!!

DD was really tired yesterday after checking her friends’ acceptance. At her school, it is not common kids post their acceptance on SNS. It is considered very bad manner, so if another friend knows who is accepted, the friend posts it on SNS, but the post is removed quite often after asked. But still they know who go where pretty soon.

There are many kids accepted EA/ED from her summer camp. DD said 3 to Harvard, 3 to Columbia, 1 to Williams, and 1 to Cornell at least out of her 30 summer camp kids - she did not check all of them. Unfortunately, her best friend at the camp was deferred.

DD looks very stressed, especially with all the results and I tried not to talk to much about college anyway.

DD camp friends did very well as of yesterday 's decision day. 2 Harvard, 2 Cornell and 2 Columbia. At least one is expected in Standard today as a recruited athlete. With no acceptance in hands yet and finals coming up next week, DD is under a lot of pressure. Nobody is posting anything on FB, but somehow words spread around.

Heartfelt congratulations to everyone here who has received good news. For all those who did not (and for all the rest of us who are not yet done with this process), I’m wishing you (us) strength and stamina to soldier on. And condolences to @Mysonsdad – life (and death) and everything else seems to go on in its way even while we are all so preoccupied with something else. My D is an only, so this is my one ride on this roller coaster. Looking forward to getting off and staggering, dazed, toward the concession stand.

@Smila my dd is my one and only ride too. It makes a tough ride.

Congratulations to the ED and EA kids who got good news yesterday!
Chocolate for the kids and beverages for the parents who got deferrals–I expect to be joining you next week. Save me a glass of red wine.
I went to a mom’s lunch yesterday for DS’s class and spent the whole time huddled with another mom who’s waiting on EA results. Everyone else there had kids heading to state flagship, so they’re already done. At least the other mom understands my stress level.

I think winter break is going to be just a time for decompressing for D, a minimal work schedule for H, and one week of chaos and one of a few days off for me at my job. Next week at school the kids have ā€œHoliday Spirit Weekā€, so there will be different winter themes each day and on Friday they’re finishing off with games and contests. Guess who is planning it all?

The school system where I work closes after next Friday. My kids go through the 23rd. I need the time off, since this year has been the hardest since I moved from the public library system in 2005. I’m looking to go back as soon as they have openings.

Congrats @EastGrad and @palm715 !

EastGrad, that must be such a relief to be finally done!

palm175, I’m sorry your D got deferred, but the full tuition scholarship sounds like a pretty nice consolation prize! I hope things work out.

If I missed anyone (this is such a busy thread this week!), congrats on early acceptances, and good luck to everyone else on future ones!

I find myself so excited for all of your kids! - although we don’t know each other IRL, I feel like this is a very genuine little community we have here…

Ditto @BeeDAre

Celebrating with you all @arisamp @palm715 @EastGrad @dyiu13 !! :D/ =D>

In another ā€œshould we be concerned or excited?ā€ moment - S received an email from Berkeley confirming receipt of his application and the link to set up his portal. He has not received a request for a LoR, so it doesn’t look like he’ll have to submit any. Hoping this means he’s a strong candidate without them. [-O<

S will hear from one EA school any day now. Wish they would tell us what day so we can relax a bit. Even though it’s a safety, having the first acceptance will be a big deal here. His other EA school announces next week. Mine is still working on essays, so you’re not alone, @MuggleMom @BeeDAre @drmom123 @lvmjac1 I say we break out the dark chocolate! Peppermint bark, anyone?
